The unique U-shaped structure of U-Net network makes it achieve good performance in image segmentation. This network is a lightweight network with a small number of parameters for small image segmentation datasets. However, when the medical image to be segmented contains a lot of detailed information, the segmentation results cannot fully meet the actual requirements. In order to achieve higher accuracy of medical image segmentation, a novel improved U-Net network architecture called multi-scale encoder-decoder U-Net+ (MEDU-Net+) is proposed in this paper. We design the GoogLeNet for achieving more information at the encoder of the proposed MEDU-Net+, and present the multi-scale feature extraction for fusing semantic information of different scales in the encoder and decoder. Meanwhile, we also introduce the layer-by-layer skip connection to connect the information of each layer, so that there is no need to encode the last layer and return the information. The proposed MEDU-Net+ divides the unknown depth network into each part of deconvolution layer to replace the direct connection of the encoder and decoder in U-Net. In addition, a new combined loss function is proposed to extract more edge information by combining the advantages of the generalized dice and the focal loss functions. Finally, we validate our proposed MEDU-Net+ MEDU-Net+ and other classic medical image segmentation networks on three medical image datasets. The experimental results show that our proposed MEDU-Net+ has prominent superior performance compared with other medical image segmentation networks.
A framework for multi-platform analytical and multi-component hybrid (testing-analysis) simulations is described in this paper and illustrated with several application examples. The framework allows the integration of various analytical platforms and geographically distributed experimental facilities into a comprehensive pseudo-dynamic hybrid simulation. The object-oriented architecture of the framework enables easy inclusion of new analysis platforms or experimental models, and the addition of a multitude of auxiliary components, such as data acquisition and camera control. Four application examples are given, namely; (i) multi-platform analysis of a bridge with soil and structural models, (ii) multiplatform, multi-resolution analysis of a high-rise building, (iii) three-site small scale frame hybrid simulation, and (iv) three-site large scale bridge hybrid simulation. These simulations serve as illustrative examples of collaborative research among geographically distributed researchers employing different analysis platforms and testing equipment. The versatility of the framework, ease of including additional modules and the wide application potential demonstrated in the paper provide a rich research environment for structural and geotechnical engineering.
The implementation and validation of multi-dimensional (multi-D) features in thermal-hydraulic system codes aims to extend the application of these codes towards multi-scale simulations. The main goal is the simulation of large-scale three-dimensional effects inside large volumes such as piping or vessel. This novel approach becomes especially relevant during the simulation of accidents with strongly asymmetric flow conditions entailing density gradients. Under such conditions, coolant mixing is a key phenomenon on the eventual variation of the coolant temperature and/or boron concentration at the core inlet and on the extent of a local re-criticality based on the reactivity feedback effects. This approach presents several advantages compared to CFD calculations, mainly concerning the model size and computational efforts. However, the range of applicability and accuracy of the newly implemented physical models at this point is still limited and needs to be further extended. This paper aims at contributing to the validation of the multi-D features of the system code ATHLET based on the simulation of the Tests 1.1 and 2.1, conducted at the test facility ROCOM. Overall, the multi-D features of ATHLET predict reasonably well the evolution from both experiments, despite an observed overprediction of coolant mixing at the vessel during both experiments.
A hierarchical multi-scale modeling strategy devoted to the study of a Bitumen-Bound Gravel (BBG) is presented in this paper. More precisely, the paper investigates the temperature-dependent linear viscoelastic of the material when submitted to low deformations levels and moderate number of cycles. In such a hierarchical approach, 3D digital Representative Elementary Volumes are built and the outcomes at a scale (here, the sub-mesoscale) are used as input data at the next higher scale (here, the mesoscale). The viscoelastic behavior of the bituminous phases at each scale is taken into account by means of a generalized Maxwell model: the bulk part of the behavior is separated from the deviatoric one and bulk and shear moduli are expanded into Prony series. Furthermore, the viscoelastic phases are considered to be thermorheologically simple: time and temperature are not independent. This behavior is reproduced by the Williams-Landel-Ferry law. By means of the FE simulations of stress relaxation tests, the parameters of the various features of this temperature-dependent viscoelastic behavior are identified.
An adaptive modeling and simulation technique is introduced for the effective and reliable fluid-structure interaction analysis using MSC/Dytran for large-scale complex pressurized liquid containment. The proposed method is composed of a series of the global rigid sloshing analysis and the locally detailed fluid-structure analysis. The critical time at which the system exhibits the severe liquid sloshing response is sought through the former analysis, while the fluid-structure interaction in the local region of interest at the critical time is analyzed by the latter analysis. Differing from the global coarse model, the local fine model considers not only the complex geometry and flexibility of structure but the effect of internal pressure. The locally detailed FSI problem is solved in terms of multi-material volume fractions and the flow and pressure fields obtained by the global analysis at the critical time are specified as the initial conditions. An in-house program for mapping the global analysis results onto the fine-scale local FSI model is developed. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified through an illustrative numerical experiment.
With the development and spread of 3D display, users can easily experience an augmented reality with 3D features. Therefore, the demand for content of an augmented reality is exponentially growing in various fields. A traditional augmented reality environment was generally created by CG(Computer Graphics) modelling production tools. However, this method takes too much time and efforts to create an augmented environment. To create an augmented environment similar to the real world, everything in the real world should be measured, gone through modeling, and located in an augmented environment. But the time and efforts spent in the creation don't produce the same environment as the real world, making it hard for users to feel the sense of reality. In this study, multi-scale 3D panorama content augmented system is suggested by using a depth-map. By finding matching features from images to add 3D features to an augmented environment, a depth-map is derived and embodied as panorama, producing high-quality augmented content system with a sense of reality. With this study, limits of 2D panorama technologies will be overcome and a sense of reality and immersion will be provided to users with a natural navigation.

Most of large scale solar panel handling robots adopt the timing-belt drive system for its driveline because of the simplicity and the easiness of implementation. The vibration caused by the flexure of the timing belt would increase as the size and the weight of the panel that the robot handles increase and the vibration would deteriorate the precision and/or productivity of the whole robot system. For the development of a proper control system and for the improvement of the design of the robot it is important to estimate the oscillatory response of the robot system including the flexible drive system properly. In this paper a flexible multi-body dynamics model of a large-scale solar-panel-handling robot with the flexible timing-belt drive system is developed using a generic multi-body dynamics analysis program, RecurDyn.
This paper presents a linear computational homogenization framework to evaluate the effective (or generalized) electromechanical coupling coefficient (EMCC) of adaptive structures with piezoelectric structural fiber (PSF) composite elements. The PSF consists of a silicon carbide (SiC) or carbon core fiber as reinforcement to a fragile piezo-ceramic shell. For the micro-scale analysis, a micromechanics model based on the variational asymptotic method for unit cell homogenization (VAMUCH) is used to evaluate the overall electromechanical properties of the PSF composites. At the macro-scale, a finite element (FE) analysis with the commercial FE code ABAQUS is performed to evaluate the effective EMCC for structures with the PSF composite patches. The EMCC is postprocessed from free-vibrations analysis under short-circuit (SC) and open-circuit (OC) electrodes of the patches. This linear two-scale computational framework may be useful for the optimal design of active structure multi-functional composites which can be used for multi-functional applications such as structural health monitoring, power harvest, vibration sensing and control, damping, and shape control through anisotropic actuation.
In this paper, we proposed a method to automatically determine the optimal radius through multi-scale LBP operation generalizing the size of radius variation and boosting learning in facial emotion recognition. When we looked at the distribution of features vectors, the most common was $LBP_{8.1}$ of 31% and sum of $LBP_{8.1}$ and $LBP_{8.2}$ was 57.5%, $LBP_{8.3}$, $LBP_{8.4}$, and $LBP_{8.5}$ were respectively 18.5%, 12.0%, and 12.0%. It was found that the patterns of relatively greater radius express characteristics of face well. In case of normal and anger, $LBP_{8.1}$ and $LBP_{8.2}$ were mainly distributed. The distribution of $LBP_{8.3}$ is greater than or equal to the that of $LBP_{8.1}$ in laugh and surprise. It was found that the radius greater than 1 or 2 was useful for a specific emotion recognition. The facial expression recognition rate of proposed multi-scale LBP method was 97.5%. This showed the superiority of proposed method and it was confirmed through various experiments.
In order to induce the rapid alcohol fermentation through the increases of the cell density in a continuous alcohol fermentation of naked barley, the single-cultivation with S. cerevisiae IS-019(SCM, ordinary control), mixed-cultivation with Saccharomyces uvarum IS-026 having a flocculent ability and S. cerevisiae IS-019(MCM), and mash recirculation by single-cultivation of S. cerevisiae IS-019(MRM) modes were investigated. The cell mass in the mixed-cultivation mode was about 10% higher than that of ordinary control but the final alcohol yield was slightlyl decreased. When recycled the mash with the flow rate of 7 l/h from V$_{6}$ to V$_{5}$ fermentors under the ordinary control, the cell density was distributed at 140~170$\times $10$^{6}$ cell/ml depending upon the fermentorsorders, higher about 20% than that of the ordinary control. Under these conditions the alcohol productivity of the maximum and the overall was 12.16 g/l$\cdot $h with an alcohol of 7.6% at the V$_{5}$ fermentor and 1.19 g/l$\cdot $h with an alcohol of 8.94%, respectively. For higher cell mass it was more effective to apply the mash recirculation mode with the single-cultivation of S. cerevisiae IS-019 in a pilot scale multi-stage CSTR.
