  • Rotor blades are important devices that affect the power performance, efficiency of energy conversion, and loading and dynamic stability of wind turbines. Therefore, considering the characteristics of a wind turbine system is important for achieving optimal blade design. When a design is complete, a design evaluation should be performed to verify the structural integrity of the proposed blade in accordance with international standards or guidelines. This paper presents a detailed exposition of the evaluation items and acceptance criteria required for the design certification of wind turbine blades. It also presents design evaluation results for a 2-MW blade (KR40.1b). Analyses of ultimate strength, buckling stability, and tip displacement were performed using FEM, and Miner's rule was applied to evaluate the fatigue life of the blade. The structural integrity of the KR40.1b blade was found to satisfy the design standards.

  • Fuel depletion and environmental problems due to the use of fossil fuels have been worsening of late, and the development of alternative energy sources is urgently required to address these problems. Among the alternative energy sources, wind energy is attracting much attention as a clean energy source, because it can be used unlimitedly without any pollutant emissions. In wind power generation, wind energy is converted to kinetic energy through rotor blades and this kinetic energy is converted to electric energy through generators. The design and manufacturing of the blades, which are the major parts of wind power generators, are very important, but South Korea still lacks the requisite basic data and key technologies and, therefore, has to import the blades from overseas. In this study, multi-layered blades capable of generating power at low wind speeds were applied to a small wind power generator and the output characteristics of the generator according to the wind speed and the number of blades were analyzed. As a result, at the maximum wind speed of 8m/s, the application of three blades achieved up to 33% and 18% higher generator output voltage, up to 33% and 15% higher generator output current, and up to 23% and 13% higher generator RPM than the application of one or two blades, respectively. In this study, the application of multi-layered blades to a small wind power generator was shown to improve the output characteristics of the generator and make the collection of electric energy possible even at low wind speeds.

A Study on the Vibration Reduction of an Automobile Fuel Pump (자동차용 연료펌프의 진동 저감에 대한 연구)

  • This article presents the reduction of vibration generated by an automobile fuel pump. In order to analyze the vibration of the fuel pump, a simplified dynamic model is established, which is composed of a rigid rotor and a equivalent springs. The equivalent stiffnesses of the upper and lower assemblies are evaluated by the comparison of modal testing results and the finite element analysis. The stiffness for the oil film of the journal bearing is extracted by using Reynold's equation. In addition, the time responses for the vibration of the fuel pump are computed by using a commercial multi-body dynamics software, RecurDyn. Based on these results, some design suggestions are proposed to reduce the vibration of an automobile fuel pump.

  • A nonlinear dynamic simulation of a small gas turbine engine was performed by using DYNGEN program with various environmental conditions. It was observed that the effect of the bleed air flow rate changed to overall engine performance. The real time linear model which was a function of engine rotor speed was resulted to be close to nonlinear simulation results. For optimal LQR controller, it was considered only fuel flow rate or both fuel flow rate and bleed air rate as inputs. In the comparison of both results, the LQR controller with multi input had better performance than that with single input.

  • In recent years, high-performance flying drones attract attention for many peoples. In particular, the drone equipped with multi-rotor is expanding its range of utilization in video imaging, aerial rescue, logistics, monitoring, measurement, military field, etc. However, the control function of its controller is very simple. In this study, using a G-sensor mounted on a mobile device, implements an enhanced controller to control flying drones through the intuitive gesture of user. The implemented controller improves the gesture recognition performance using a neural network algorithm.

  • This paper presents design of a bearingless main rotor of SNUF (Seoul National University Flap) blade equipped with active trailing-edge flap to reduce the hub vibratory loads during helicopter forward flight. For that purpose, sectional design of the flexbeam is carried out using the thin-walled composite material rotating beam vibration analysis program (CORBA77_MEMB) in EDISON. Using the multi-body dynamics analysis program, DYMORE, blade dynamic characteristics and those of the loads control are examined using the active trailing-edge flap in terms of the flexbeam sectional design.

  • An Euler-based CFD tool has been developed for the performance evaluation of a thrust reverser mounted on a high bypass ratio turbofan engine. The computational domain surrounded by the ground and non-reflection boundary includes the whole nacelle configuration with a deployed thrust reverser. The numerical algorithm is based on the modified Godunovs scheme to allow the second order accuracy in both space and time. The grid system is generated by using eleven multi-blocks, of which the total cell number is 148,400. The thrust reverser is modeled as if it locates at the nacelle simply in all circumferential direction. The existence of a fan and an OGV(Outlet Guide Vane) is simulated by adopting the actuator disk concept, in which predetermined radial distributions of stagnation pressure ratio and adiabatic efficiency coefficient are used for the rotor type disk, and stagnation pressure losses and flow outlet angles for the stator type disk. All boundary conditions including the fan and OGV simulation are treated by Riemann solver. The developed solver is applied to a turbofan engine with a bypass ratio of about 5.7 and the diameter of the fan cowl of 83 inch. The computational results show that the Euler-based inviscid method is very useful and economical to evaluate the performance of thrust reversers.

  • In this study, it is to verify the applicability for a simplified model(IEC61400-2, Design Require-ments for Small Wind Turbines, 2006-03) is the international standard is used to the structural design. In the design process of a wind turbine, the safety of a designed wind turbine is one of the most important factors. The simplified model can be used to determine the design load for small wind turbines. So, this paper has been re-evaluated a small wind turbine design loads that produced already. As a result, the material characteristic value(Rchar) of Blade, Rotor shaft and the tower are $90E6[N/m^2]$, $441E6[N/m^2]$ and $94E6[N/m^2]$. Therefore, the value of the applied safety factor to each part of the survival probability of 95% are satisfied.

Thermal and Flow Modeling and Fin Structure Optimization of an Electrical Device with a Staggered Fin (엇갈림 휜을 갖는 전자기기의 열유동 모델링 및 휜 형상 최적 설계)

  • Thermal and flow modeling and fin structure optimization were performed to reduce the weight of an electrical device with a staggered fin. First, a numerical model for thermal and flow characteristics was suggested, and then, the model was verified experimentally. Using the verified model, improvement in cooling performance of the cooling system through the staggered fins was predicted. As a result, 87.5% of total heat generated was dissipated through the cooling fins, and a thermal island was observed in the rotor because of low velocity of the internal air flow through the air gap. In addition, it was confirmed that the staggered fin improves the cooling performance but it also increases the total pressure drop within the cooling system, by maximizing the leading edge effect. Based on this analysis result, the effect of each design parameter on the thermal and flow characteristics was analyzed to select the main optimal design parameters, and multi-objective optimization was performed by considering the cooling performance and the fin weight. In conclusion, the optimized fin structure improved the cooling performance by 7% and reduced the fin weight by 28% without any compromise of the pressure drop.

  • As the industry requiring clean vacuum condition like semiconductor and display manufacturing expands, importance of dry vacuum pumps has been increased. Screw-type dry vacuum pump, occupying major share with multi-stage roots pump in dry-pump market, has big strength specially in harsh application area accompanying serious by-product accumulation. Recently, development in screw-type pump has been focused on improving energy efficiency. In this article, technology of screw-type dry vacuum pump is reviewed and the requirement for actual industrial application is considered. In addition, the expected evolution for screw-type dry pump in near future is also described.
