This paper proposes a multi-level product modeling framework for long-term lifecycle products. The framework can help engineers to define product models and relate them to physical instances. The framework is defined in three levels; data, design model, modeling language. The data level represents real-world products, The model level describes design models of real-world products. The modeling language level defines concepts and relationships to describe product design models. The concepts and relationships in the modeling language level enable engineers to express the semantics of product models in an engineering-friendly way. The interactions between these three levels are explained to show how the framework can manage long-term lifecycle product information. A prototype system is provided for further understanding of the framework.
This paper introduces an approach to an ontology-based multi-level knowledge framework for a knowledge management system for discrete-product development. Participants in a product life cycle want to share comprehensive product knowledge without any ambiguity and heterogeneity. However, previous knowledge management approaches are limited in providing those aspects: therefore, we suggest an ontology-based multi-level knowledge framework (OBMKF). The bottom level, the axiom, specifies the semantics of concepts and relations of knowledge so ambiguity can be alleviated. The middle level is a product development knowledge map; it defines the concepts and the relations of the product domain knowledge and guides the engineer to process their engineering decisions. The middle level is then classified further into more detailed levels, such as generic product level, specific product level, product version level, and manufactured item level, according to the various viewpoints. The top level is specialized knowledge for a specific domain that gives the solution of a specific task or problem. It is classified into three knowledge types: expert knowledge, engineering function knowledge, and data-analysis-based knowledge. This proposed framework is based on ontology to accommodate a comprehensive range of knowledge and is represented with first-order logic to maintain a uniform representation.
This paper presents a new Internet-based computational framework for the realistic simulation of multi-scale response of structural systems. Two levels of parallel processing are involved in this frame work: multiple local distributed computing environments connected by the Internet to form a cluster-to-cluster distributed computing environment. To utilize such a computing environment for a realistic simulation, the simulation task of a structural system has been separated into a simulation of a simplified global model in association with several detailed component models using various scales. These related multi-scale simulation tasks are distributed amongst clusters and connected to form a multi-level hierarchy. The Internet is used to coordinate geographically distributed simulation tasks. This paper also presents the development of a software framework that can support the multi-level hierarchical simulation approach, in a cluster-to-cluster distributed computing environment. The architectural design of the program also allows the integration of several multi-scale models to be clients and servers under a single platform. Such integration can combine geographically distributed computing resources to produce realistic simulations of structural systems.
This paper explores the applicability of traditional TAM and DOT to multi-level adoption (first level and second level adoption) process occurring within an organizational context. This paper identifies existing gaps in traditional innovation adoption models and concludes that a new framework is required. A new hybrid theoretical framework is developed which combines insights from organizational-level research on technology implementation with constructs from traditional innovation adoption models.

We present an innovative method of multi physics application involving energetic materials. Energetic materials are related to reacting flows in extreme environments such as fires and explosions. They typically involve high pressure, high temperature, strong shock waves and high strain rate deformation of metals. We use an Eulerian methodology to address these problems. Our approach is naturally free from large deformation of materials that make it suitable for high strain rate multi-material interacting problems. Furthermore we eliminate the possible interface smearing by using the level sets. We heave devised a new level set based tracking framework that can elegantly handle large gradients typically found in reacting gases and metals. We show several work-in-progress application of our integrated framework.
Viewpoint-dependent feature-based modelling in computer-aided design is developed for the purposes of supporting engineering design representation and automation. The approach of this paper uses a combination of a multi-level modelling approach. This has two stages of mapping between models, and the multi-level model approach is implemented in three-level architecture. Top of this level is a feature-based description for each viewpoint, comprising a combination of form features and other features such as loads and constraints for analysis. The middle level is an executable representation of the feature model. The bottom of this multi-level modelling is a evaluation of a feature-based CAD model obtained by executable feature representations defined in the middle level. The mappings involved in the system comprise firstly, mapping between the top level feature representations associated with different viewpoints, for example for the geometric simplification and addition of boundary conditions associated with moving from a design model to an analysis model, and secondly mapping between the top level and the middle level representations in which the feature model is transformed into the executable representation. Because an executable representation is used as the intermediate layer, the low level evaluation can be active. The example will be implemented with an analysis model which is evaluated and for which results are output. This multi-level modelling approach will be investigated within the framework aimed for the design automation with a feature-based model.
Network human-robot interface is an important research topic. In home application, users access the robotic system directly via voice, gestures or through the network. Users explore a system by using the services provided by this system and to some extend users are enable to participate in a service as partners. A service may be provided by a robot, a group of robots or robots and other network connected systems (distributed sensors, information systems, etc). All these services are done in the network environment, where uncertainty such as the unstable network connection, the availability of the partners in a service, exists. Moreover, these services are controlled by several users, accessing at different time by different methods. Our research aimed at solving this problem to provide a high available level, flexible coordination system. In this paper, a multi-agent framework is proposed. This framework is validated by using our new concept of slave agents, a responsive multi-agent environment, a virtual directory facilitator (VDF), and a task allocation system using contract net protocol. Our system uses a mixed model between distributed and centralized model. It uses a centralized agent management system (AMS) to control the overall system. However, the partners and users may be distributed agents connected to the center through agent communication or centralized at the AMS container using the slave agents to represent the physical agents. The system is able to determine the task allocation for a group of robot working as a team to provide a service. A number of experiments have been conducted successfully in our lab environment using Issac robot, a PDA for user agent and a wireless network system, operated under our multi agent framework control. The experiments show that this framework works well and provides some advantages to existing systems.

We present an innovative method of multi-physics application involving energetic materials. Energetic materials are related to reacting flows in extreme environments such as fires and explosions. They typically involve high pressure, hish temperature, strong non-linear shock waves, and high strain rate deformation of metals. We use an Eulerian methodology to address these problems. Our approach is naturally free from large deformation of materials that makes it suitable for high strain-rate multi-material interaction problems. Furthermore we eliminate the possible interface smearing by using the level sets. We have devised a new level set based tracking framework that can elegantly handle large gradients typically found in reacting gases and metals. We show several work-in-progress applications of our algorithm including the Taylor impact test, explosive venting and additional confined explosion problems of modem interest.

The directions of further developments in the modeling of sintering are pointed out, including multi-scale modeling of sintering, on-line sintering damage criteria, particle agglomeration, sintering with phase transformations. A true multi-scale approach is applied for the development of a new meso-macro methodology for modeling of sintering. The developed macroscopic level computational framework envelopes the mesoscopic simulators. No closed forms of constitutive relationships are assumed for the parameters of the material. The model framework is able to predict the final dimensions of the sintered specimen on a global scale and identify the granular structure in any localized area for prediction of the material properties.
This study aims to analyze the features of adaptation governance of local governments by applying a multi-level governance framework, and to draw policy implications. We analyzed changes in governance of 17 metropolitan cities/provinces, and 33 municipalities in terms of horizontal and vertical cooperation in the process of developing 'The Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan' and its implementation stage. The result shows that the plan contributed to the higher level of vertical cooperation between the central and the local governments to a certain extent, however, during the implementation stage, the level of the partnership decreased due to the absence of governance mechanism. These trends were statistically significant at the level of municipalities. The role of Korea Adaptation Center for Climate Change (KACCC) was also diminished after establishing the plan. The horizontal partnership level among the relevant departments of the local governments showed no significant change as the level was low even in the planning stage. Though Public-Private Partnership (PPP) has increased a bit, it was statistically significant only in the municipalities. Moreover, there was no governance mechanism for PPP or it did not work properly. Based on the results above, it is recommended that the effectiveness of the plans should be increased and support for climate change partnerships or forums at a local level that promotes adaptive capacity is needed. The role of metropolitan cities and provinces should be strengthened through building a multi-level partnership structure. Governance institutionalizing for monitoring and evaluation is also needed.
