Dimensional Synthesis, which is apart of kinematic synthesis, is to determine the dimensions of a mechanism of preconceived typer for a specified task and prescribed performance. In this paper, in an effort to provide designers with flexibility, a dimensional approximate synthesis method is presented for utilizing prescribed tolerance both the displacement and joint positions of a mechanism to be synthesized. For this, a constrained optimization problem is formulated with displacement parameters and joint positions as variables. The proposed method is applied to the synthesis of a 5-SS multi link suspension mechanism. The method discussed here, however, can be easily applied to any mechanism of which the kinematic constraint equations can be derived.
In this paper, an analysis problem of repair levels and spare part allocation for MIME(Multi indenture multi echelon) systems is studied using simulation and meta-heuristics. We suggest a method to determine simultaneously repair levels and spare parts allocation to minimize the life cycle cost of MIME system under availability constraint. A simulated annealing method is used to analyze the repair levels and genetic algorithm is used to obtain the optimal allocation of spare parts. We also develop a simulation system to calculate the life cycle cost and system availability. Some numerical examples are also studied.
A problem formulation and solution methodology for design optimization of laminated thin-walled composite beams of generic section is presented. Objective functions and constraint equations are given in the form of beam stiffness. For two different problems one for open section and the other for closed section, the objective function considered is bending stiffness about x-axis. Depending upon the case, one can consider bending, torsional and axial stiffnesses. The different search and optimization algorithm, known as Evolution Strategies (ES) has been applied to find the optimal fibre orientation of composite laminates. A multi-level optimization approach is also implemented by narrowing down the size of search space for individual design variables in each successive level of optimization process. The numerical results presented demonstrate the computational advantage of the proposed method "Evolution strategies" which become pronounced to solve optimization of thin-walled composite beams of generic section.

We propose methods of linear transceiver design for two different power constraints, sum relay power constraint and per relay power constraint, which determine signal processing matrices such as base station (BS) transmitter, relay precoders and user receivers to minimize sum mean square error (SMSE) for multi-relay multi-user (MRMU) networks. However, since the formulated problem is non-convex one which is hard to be solved, we suboptimally solve the problems by defining convex subproblems with some fixed variables. We adopt iterative sequential designs of which each iteration stage corresponds to each subproblem. Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) theorem and SMSE duality are employed as specific methods to solve subproblems. The numerical results verify that the proposed methods provide comparable performance to that of a full relay cooperation bound (FRCB) method while outperforming the simple amplify-and-forward (SAF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) relaying in terms of not only SMSE, but also the sum rate.

The geometry of engineering systems affects their performances. For this reason, the shape of engineering systems needs to be optimized in the initial design stage. However, engineering system design problems consist of multi-objective optimization and the performance analysis using commercial code or numerical analysis is generally time-consuming. To solve these problems, many engineers perform the optimization using the approximation model (response surface). The Response Surface Method (RSM) is generally used to predict the system performance in engineering research field, but RSM presents some prediction errors for highly nonlinear systems. The major objective of this research is to establish an optimal design method for multi-objective problems and confirm its applicability. The proposed process is composed of three parts: definition of geometry, generation of response surface, and optimization process. To reduce the time for performance analysis and minimize the prediction errors, the approximation model is generated using the Backpropagation Artificial Neural Network (BPANN) which is considered as Neuro-Response Surface Method (NRSM). The optimization is done for the generated response surface by non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Through case studies of marine system and ship structure (substructure of floating offshore wind turbine considering hydrodynamics performances and bulk carrier bottom stiffened panels considering structure performance), we have confirmed the applicability of the proposed method for multi-objective side constraint optimization problems.

Most approaches for continuous review inventory problem need tables for loss function and cumulative standard normal distribution. Furthermore, it is time-consuming to calculate order quantity (Q) and reorder point (r) iteratively until required values are converged. The purpose of this paper is to develop a direct method to get the solution without any tables. We used approximation approaches for loss function and cumulative standard normal distribution. The proposed method can get the solution directly without any iterative procedure for Q, r and without any tables. The performance of the proposed approach is tested by using numerical examples. The budget constraint of this paper assumes that purchasing costs are paid at the time an order is arrived. This constraint can be easily replaced by capacity constraint or budget constraint in which' purchasing costs are paid at the time an order is placed.
This paper provides a new topology optimization technique which is intended to maximize the fundamental frequency with simultaneous consideration of other natural frequencies in the form of multi-frequency problems. The modal strain energy is considered as the objective function to be minimized and the initial volume of structures is used as the constraint function. The resizing algorithm based on the optimality criteria is adopted to update the hole size existing inside the material. From numerical tests, the proposed technique is found to be very effective to maximize the fundamental frequency of the structure and it can also successfully consider several higher mode effects into the optimum topology of structure through the introduction of weights.
An improved multi-level (IML) optimization algorithm using automatic differentiation (AD) of framed structures is proposed in this paper. For the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, multi-level optimization techniques using a decomposition method that separates both system-level and element-level optimizations, that utilizes and an artificial constraint deletion technique, are incorporated in the algorithm. And also to save the numerical efforts, an efficient reanalysis technique through approximated structural responses such as moments and frequencies with respect to intermediate variables is proposed in the paper. Sensitivity analysis of dynamic structural response is executed by AD that is a powerful technique for computing complex or implicit derivatives accurately and efficiently with minimal human effort. The efficiency and robustness of the IML algorithm, compared with a plain multi-level (PML) algorithm, is successfully demonstrated in the numerical examples.
This paper reports on the application of the integration of mathematical programming model and database in a decision support system (DSS) for the planning of the multi-reservoir operating system. The DSS is based on a multi-objective, mixed-integer goal programming (MIGP) model, which can generate efficient solutions via the weighted-sums method (WSM). The major concern of this study is seamless, efficient integration between the mathematical model and the database, because there are significant differences in structure and content between the data for a mathematical model and the data for a conventional database application. In order to load the external optimization results on the database, we developed a systematic way of naming variable/constraint so that a rapid identification of variables/constraints is possible. An efficient database structure for planning of the multi-reservoir operating system is presented by taking advantage of the naming convention of the variable/constraint.
The performance of passive control system for the seismic protection of a multi-tower cable-stayed bridge with the application of partially longitudinal constraint system is investigated. The seismic responses of the Jiashao Bridge, a six-tower cable-stayed bridge using the partially longitudinal constraint system are studied under real earthquake ground motions. The effects of the passive control devices including the viscous fluid dampers and elastic cables on the seismic responses of the bridge are examined by taking different values of parameters of the devices. Further, the optimization design principle of passive control system using viscous fluid dampers is presented to determine the optimized parameters of the viscous fluid dampers. The results of the investigations show that the control objective of the multi-tower cable-stayed bridge with the partially longitudinal constraint system is to reduce the base shears and moments of bridge towers longitudinally restricted with the bridge deck. The viscous fluid dampers are found to be more effective than elastic cables in controlling the seismic responses. The optimized parameters for the viscous fluid dampers are determined following the principle that the peak displacement at the end of bridge deck reaches to the maximum value, which can yield maximum reductions in the base shears and moments of bridge towers longitudinally restricted with the bridge deck, with slight increases in the base shears and moments of bridge towers longitudinally unrestricted with the bridge deck.
