DSP-Based Digital Controller for Multi-Phase Synchronous Buck Converters

  • This paper represents a design and implementation of a digital controller for a multi-phase synchronous buck converter (SBC) using a digital signal processor (DSP). The multi-phase SBC has generally been used for a voltage regulation module (VRM) of a microprocessor because of its high current handling capability at a low output voltage. The VRM requires high control performance of tight output regulation, high slew rate, and load sharing capability of multiple converters. In order to achieve these requirements, the design and implementation of a digital control system for a multi-phase SBC are presented in this paper. The digital PWM generation, current sensing, and voltage and current controller using a DSP TMS320F2812 are considered. The experimental results are provided to show the validity of the implemented digital control system.

  • In this paper, we study the stabilization control if an underwater vehicle from its initial posture to its desired one. We assume tint the underwater vehicle has velocity constraint, i.e. it has no velocity component for some direction. Our approach is based on the nonholonomic system which am derived from velocity constraints that cannot integrable. We proposed a control strategy for posture control of the underwater vehicle using multi-rate digital control. The proposed control scheme is applied to the berthing control if an underwater vehicle and verified the effectiveness if control strategy by numerical simulation.

  • The lifting technique is a standard control procedure that is commonly applied to dual-rate systems, where a critical difficulty is that care must be taken so that the resulting equivalent system preserves the causality constraint between the control signal and the measured output. To overcome this difficulty, the most attractive result has been suggested by defining control time sequences as the union of sample and hold time sequences. However, the sacrifice of regular control period scheme results in some serious disadvantages; restrictions on the implementation to hardware and the corresponding inefficient control scheme. On the contrary, this paper proposes a novel dual-rate control technique, which redescribes the system as a control-rate-based system having regular control period and designs the controller, with no causality constraint, through Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) formulation.

  • We have constructed a multi-channel SQUID magnetometer system. The system is designed to operate normally with 10 high temperature direct coupled SQUIDs. The main features of the system include a remote control by serial communication, low noise with wide bandwidth and high slew rate by several MHz modulation, signal conditioning and calibration by digital signal processing.

  • In this paper, we propose a floral scent recognition using odor sensors and a odor display using odor distribution system. Proposed odor recognition has method of correlation coefficient between sensors that select optimal sensors in floral scent recognition system of selective multi-sensors. Proposed floral scent recognition system consists of four module such as floral scent acquisition module, optimal sensor decision module, entropy-based floral scent detection module, and floral scent recognition module. Odor distribution system consists of generation module of distribution information, control module of distribution, output module of distribution. We applied to floral scent recognition for performance evaluation of proposed sensors decision method. As a result, application of proposed method with floral scent recognition obtained recognition rate of 95.67% case of using 16 sensors while applied floral scent recognition system of proposed sensor decision method confirmed recognition rate of 96% using only 8 sensors. Also, we applied to odor display of proposed method and obtained 3.18 thorough MOS experimentation.

  • In this paper, we propose an electric circuit using one common-arm of H-Bridge inverters to reduce the number of switching components in the multi-level inverter combined with H-Bridge inverters and transformers. And furthermore, we suggested a new multi-level PWM inverter using PWM level to reduce THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). We use a phase-shift switching method that has the same rate of usage at each transformer. Also, we test the proposed prototype 9-level inverter to clarify the proposed electric circuit and reasonableness of the control signal for the proposed multi-level PWM inverter.

  • A control algorithm for multi-stage dampers is developed based on the mode skyhook control concept, and implemented on the full vehicle system environment. The test vehicle system is equipped with the real time controller, four-stage variable dampers and sensors. The real time controller is developed using a digital signal processor(DSP), digital I/O, A/D and D/A converters. The dampers are driven by the electromagnetic actuators of less than 20 msec response time. The sensors include accelerometers, relative displacement transducers, and steering wheel rate sensors, etc. Through a series of tests in laboratory and proving ground, the performance of the semi-active suspension system is evaluated and it is shown that the vehicle dynamic characteristics is improved with the developed damping system. Futhermore, the parameter tuning methods to enhance vehicle dynamic performance are propsoed.

  • This paper presents the real-time implementation of an AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate) vocoder which is included in the asynchronous International Mobile Telecommunication (IMT)-2000 mobile ASIC. The implemented AMR vocoder is a multi-rate coder with 8 modes operating at bit rates from 12.2kbps down to 4.75kbps. Not only the encoder and the decoder as basic functions of the vocoder are implemented, but VAD (Voice Activity Detection), SCR (Source Controlled Rate) operation and frame structuring blocks for the system interface are also implemented in this vocoder. The DSP for AMR vocoder implementation is a 16bit fixed-point DSP which is based on the TeakLite core and consists of memory block, serial interface block, register files for the parallel interface with CPU, and interrupt control logic. Through the implementation, we reduce the maximum operating complexity to 24MIPS by efficiently managing the memory structure. The AMR vocoder is verified throughout all the test vectors provided by 3GPP, and stable operation in the real-time testing board is also proved.

  • In this paper, We propose variable cut-off frequency and variable sample rate small-area multi-channel digital filter for telemetry system. Proposed digital filter reduced hardware area by implementing filter banks that can variably use cut-off frequency and sample rate without additional filter banks for an arbitrary cut ratio. In addition, We propose the architecture in which sample rate can variably be selected according to the number of filters that pass through the multiplexer control. By using time division multiplexing (TDM) supported by the finite impulse response (FIR) intellectual property (IP) of Quartus, the proposed digital filter can greatly reduce digital signal processing (DSP) blocks from 80 to 1 compared without TDM. Proposed digital filter calculated order and coefficients using Kaiser window function in Matlab, and implemented using very high speed integrated circuits hardware descryption language (VHDL). After applying to the telemetry system, we confirmed that the proposed digital filter was operating through the experimental results in the test environment.

  • As high speed digital systems continue to use components with faster edge rate and clock speeds, transmission of the digital information, it can bring about many troubles. The increasing requirement for controlled impedance PCBs becomes both a critical success factor and a design challenge to implement a system. Especially, the noise sources in high frequency digital systems include the noise in power supply, ground and packaging, and they destroy the fidelity of signals. Therefore PCB design with impendence matching is needed to improve fidelity of signal in H/W. In this paper, we have developed an impedance control and analysis tool for multi-layer PCB design, and simulates the tracks controlled impedance with the test coupon. So, it can save the design time and support the economical PCB design.
