  • The study was carried out to elucidate the influenced of shading and mulching with polyethylen vinyl on growth and yield of Cinidium officinale Makino, and improve the cultivation method of those medicinal plants in northern area of Gyeong-buk province, Korea. Top fresh weight of Cinidium officinale Makino was increased by both 35 % and 55% shading compared to the non-shadingand decreased by 75 % shading, but that of Ligusticum chuanxing Hart. Was decreased by the shading tested The summer wilt of Cinidium officinale Makino severely occurred in non-shading but greatly reduced by 55 % or 75 %shading, while no difference was observed in Ligusticum chuanxing Hort, between the shading and the non-shading. Dry root yield Cinidium officinale Makino was increased by 17 % and 19 % in 35 % and 55 % shading levels, respectively, compared to the dry root yield(254kg/10a) in non-shading. However, it was decreased in Ligusticum chuaxing Hort. by the shading. Emergence ratio of Cinidium officinale Makino was increased by black polyethylen vinyl mulch but decreased by transparent polyethylen vinyl mulch, compard to non-mulch. Polyethylen vinyl mulch increased the top fresh weight of Cinidium officinale Makino Especialy black polythylen vinyl mulch was very effective on increasing the top fresh weight. Dry root yield of Cinidium officinale Makino was increased by 32 % and 30 %, respectively, compared to the non-shading.

  • The optimum planting date, plant spacing, and harvest time for production of small-sized sweetpotato was evaluated in 2003 to 2004 at the Mokpo Experiment Station. Small-sized sweetpotato is important as snack food in Korea. Optimum planting date and plant spacing were with plastic mulch, and mid-April and $75{\times}15{\sim}20cm$ respectively, mid-June and $75{\times}15cm$ respectively without plastic mulch. Storage root yield decreased with early harvest, but the ratio of small-sized sweetpotato was higher in plots harvested after 100 days of planting (DAP) than that of 80 or 120 DAP. Considerable differences in storage root yield was noted with planting dates and plant spacings, but the use of plastic mulch resulted to smaller yield variations in plots, harvested in mid-April. Planting in mid-April and harvesting after 100 DAP increased income by about $32{\sim}61%$ compared with plantings mid-May.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of different surface soil management practices on soil microflora in volcanic ash soils of citrus orchard. Soil samples were collected from citrus orchards of clean cultivation, grass sod, and grass mulch system in May and September 1997. Soil chemical properties, populations of various microorganisms, enzyme activities, microbial biomass C were analyzed. Average soil pH were 4.7, and average nitrogen and organic matter contents were 6 and $140.2g\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. Aerobic bacteria were distributed at $26,2-47.3{\times}10^6cfu\;g^{-1}$ level. Among the aerobic bacteria Pseudomonas spp., Rhizobium spp., and thermophilic Bacillus spp. were dominant in most of the investigated orchard soils. Density of actinomycetes were low at $1.8-84.6{\times}10^5cfu\;g^{-1}$ level. Fungi were distributed at $26.4-182.1{\times}10^5cfu\;g^{-1}$ level and the density was higher in grass mulch and sward sites. In september, phosphomonoesterase activity was high at $239.6{\mu}g\;PNP\;g\;soil^{-1}\;h^{-1}$ in clean cultivated citrus orchards. Soil cellulase activity were higher at $602.6{\mu}g\;GE\;g\;soil^{-1}$\;24\;h^{-1}$ in grass sward cultivation than any other soil management practices. Soil microbial biomass C was higher in grass mulch cultivated orchards.

  • BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the fertilizer sources and ground cover mulches on nutrient release, growth, and photosynthesis in small one-year-old apple (Malus ${\times}$ domestica Borkh.) trees in controlled conditions. METHODS AND RESULTS: Treatments included no fertilizer (NF), commercial organic fertilizer (CF), and poultry litter (PL) for fertilizer treatments, and wood chips (WC), shredded paper (SP), green compost (GC), and grass clippings (GR) for cover mulch treatments. All treatments were applied proportionally based on the volume ratio equivalent to the soil. CF, PL, and GR treatments that had optimum carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) ratios (less than 30:1) for N mineralization through the microbes released the greatest $NH_4^+$ concentrations in the pot media at 90 days after the treatments, but GC mulch with the optimum C:N ratio did not. CF-, PL- and GR-treated plants had the largest leaf area, thickest stem diameter, longest shoot extension, and greater dry matter production. CONCLUSION(s): CF and PL showed an suitable organic nutrient source for improving plant growth in an orchard. Interestingly, GR also could be a nutrient source for tree growth, if vegetation competition is controlled by maintaining vegetation height and recycling enough grass clippings to the soil in an orchard.

  • In this study, an effort was made to find out more effective methods for vegetation establishment on denuded forest land along Cheon Bo Mountains, This area has serious sheet erosion as a major erosion process and parent material is granite gneiss which is known as one of the most erosive materials. Lespedeza bicolor, Arundinella hirta and Robinia pseudoacacia were used as ground cover species. Seeding methods were open broadcast seeding and broadcast seeding with straw mulch, dill seeding with 10cm and 20cm width, and spot seeding with 20cm and 30cm diameter. 1. On slopes less than 30 degrees, broadcast seeding method with straw mulch was the most effective way to establish vegetation cover. 2. On steep slopes more than 30 degrees, 10cm drill seeding method was more effective than the other methods. 3. Soil Texture has an influence on vegetation establishment governing soil moisture condition. Coverage and fresh weight were increased with the fine material qantity in soil. 4. In process of year, coverage was increased with fresh weight. On the other hand, survival decreased.

  • Effects of straw mulching on growth of shoot and root of Panax ginseng, soil physical and chemical characteristics were investigated. Straw mulching increased root yield, stem length, leaf area and decreased defoliated plant rate and missing root rate. Percent solid phase and soil hardness decreased, and porosity, percent air phase and percent liquid phase increased under straw mulch. It increased soil water content and decreased soil temperature especially in the rear side of the bed. Available soil phosphorus (very harmfully in some case), exchangeable potassium, organic matter increased while exchangeable calcium decreased and the lowering of pH was retarded under mulch. Straw mulching greatly reduced need population, prevented soil covering on the lower side of leaves and eliminated solings to plants, bed sides and on bed top.
