In this paper, we present a movie rating prediction architecture based on a convolutional neural network (CNN). Our prediction architecture extends TextCNN, a popular CNN-based architecture for sentence classification, in three aspects. First, character embeddings are utilized to cover many variants of words since reviews are short and not well-written linguistically. Second, the attention mechanism (i.e., squeeze-and-excitation) is adopted to focus on important features. Third, a scoring function is proposed to convert the output of an activation function to a review score in a certain range (1-10). We evaluated our prediction architecture on a movie review dataset and achieved a low MSE (e.g., 3.3841) compared with an existing method. It showed the superiority of our movie rating prediction architecture.

This study investigates the effects of the volume and valence of the movie reviews on the weekly box-office revenues. Existing literature shows that only the volume of movie reviews influences the box office results, but not valence. However, it has limitations in that it includes only the positivity or negativity ratio of the reviews, not the strength of the valence. In order to overcome such limitations, this study includes the degree of valence. This study used approximately 1.3 million reviews about 300 movies as the sample which was collected from a movie review site in an online portal, that is, movie.naver.com. SPSS was used to test the proposed model. The results of this study show different findings compared to those of the previous studies. First, the volume of movie reviews has been a consistent predictor of the box office success throughout the study periods. Second, the ratio of positive reviews has no impact on the first week's results, but shows significant effects on the box office results during the second week. Third, regarding the degree of positivity or negativity in reviews, the degree of positivity has a significant impact on the box office results only during the first week, while the degree of negativity does not have any significant effects on the results. However, from the second week, the situation is reversed; that is, only the degree of negativity has a significant impact on the box office results, but not the positivity.

This paper compared and analyzed costume design shown in two movies that was adapted from the same original work, 'Snow White'. One movie consists of a western director and a western designer team while the other movie is shot by an Asian director and an Asian designer team. Two movies show similarity and difference in expression of characters in 'Snow White'. The findings are as followed;- Both movies project an image of modern women, which is mainly represented by active and confident women, However, Ishioka Eiko, the costume designer of < Mirror, Mirror >, created unique costume in the movie by applying splendid and vivid colors to western costume to make exotic feeling. On the other hand, Colleen Atwood, who was inspired by costume in each historic period and region of the Western. created costume that was closer to the tradition of the Western in his movie, < Snow White and the Huntsman >. The purpose of this study is to help the Korean movie industry to find a way to advance to the world market by fully understanding how the Easterners and the Westerners feel and express 'Snow White'. Moreover, this study may present a chance to review importance and value of the movie costume design area.
Motion pictures are so typical experience goods that consumers tend to look for more credible information. Hence, movie audiences consider movie viewers' reviews more important than the information provided by the film distributor. Recently many portal sites allow consumers to post their reviews and opinions so that other people check the number of consumer reviews and scores before going to the theater. There are a few previous researches studying the electronic word of mouth(eWOM) effect in the movie industry. They found that the volume of eWOM influenced the revenue of the movie significantly but the valence of eWOM did not affect it much (Liu 2006). The goal of our research is also to investigate the eWOM effects in general. But our research is different from the previous studies in several aspects. First, we study the eWOM effect in Korean movie industry. In other words, we would like to check whether we can generalize the results of the previous research across countries. The similar econometric models are applied to Korean movie data that include 746,282 consumer reviews on 439 movies. Our results show that both the valence(RATING) and the volume(LNMSG) of the eWOM influence weekly movie revenues. This result is different from the previous research findings that the volume only influences the revenue. We conjectured that the difference of self construal between Asian and American culture may explain this difference (Kitayama 1991). Asians including Koreans have more interdependent self construal than American, so that they are easily affected by other people's thought and suggestion. Hence, the valence of the eWOM affects Koreans' choice of the movie. Second, we find the critical defect of the previous eWOM models and, hence, attempt to correct it. The previous eWOM model assumes that the volume of eWOM (LNMSG) is an independent variable affecting the movie revenue (LNREV). However, the revenue can influence the volume of the eWOM. We think that treating the volume of eWOM as an independent variable a priori is too restrictive. In order to remedy this problem, we employed a simultaneous equation in which the movie revenue and the volume of the eWOM can affect each other. That is, our eWOM model assumes that the revenue (LNREV) and the volume of eWOM (LNMSG) have endogenous relationship where they influence each other. The results from this simultaneous equation model showed that the movie revenue and the eWOM volume interact each other. The movie revenue influences the eWOM volume for the entire 8 weeks. The reverse effect is more complex. Both the volume and the valence of eWOM affect the revenue in the first week, but only the volume affect the revenue for the rest of the weeks. In the first week, consumers may be curious about the movie and look for various kinds of information they can trust, so that they use the both the quantity and quality of consumer reviews. But from the second week, the quality of the eWOM only affects the movie revenue, implying that the review ratings are more important than the number of reviews. Third, our results show that the ratings by professional critics (CRATING) had negative effect to the weekly movie revenue (LNREV). Professional critics often give low ratings to the blockbuster movies that do not have much cinematic quality. Experienced audiences who watch the movie for fun do not trust the professionals' ratings and, hence, tend to go for the low-rated movies by them. In summary, applied to the Korean movie ratings data and employing a simultaneous model, our results are different from the previous eWOM studies: 1) Koreans (or Asians) care about the others' evaluation quality more than quantity, 2) The volume of eWOM is not the cause but the result of the revenue, 3) Professional reviews can give the negative effect to the movie revenue.
The purpose of this study is to consider the expression of costume through the review of cinema costumes and to provide the model of cooperation between fashion and movie industry by analysis of collaboration with fashion brands in the movie . The subjects are the 1974 film directed by Jack Clayton and the 2013 version by Baz Luhrmann. Cinema Fashion was studied by analyzing the costumes of the two main characters, Gatsby and Daisy, in each scene. Gatsby's costume appeared as a model of traditional American classic suit, sensitive G-G look that symbolizes social success and traditional casual style that reflects upper-class life style. Daisy's costume expressed pastel toned luxury flapper look, oriental art deco style, and prestigious jewelry representing high class. The collaborations with fashion brands were carried out with Ralph Lauren and Cartier in 1974 film, and Brooks Brothers, Prada, and Tiffany in 2013. The value of prestige brands that matched the images of the movie was utilized, but marketing strategies for the promotion of fashion goods were not enough in 1974 version. On the other hand, in 2013 film, the effects of collaboration of the movie and fashion brands were forecasted sufficiently and marketing campaigns for promotion were performed in a various ways. The characteristics of collaborations were as follows: (1) the usage of prestige brands value, (2) collections planning and promotion using the stories of a movie, (3) the usage of multidirectional digital media, and (4) multi-dimensional promotion using entertainment factors. In collaborations with the movie, fashion brands could make cooperative relationship to produce the positive effects for promotion and prestige image strategies and draw attention of the people to the movie and fashion.
The present study analyzed movie consumption behavior from the perspective of transaction cost, taking into account the possible incurrence of additional costs in the process of consumers obtaining movie information to choose movies. Regression and multinomial logistic regression analyses were performed in the analysis by taking movie information and the individuals' social demographic characteristics as independent variables and the number and frequency of movies watched as dependent variables, using information from the "2015 movie consumer survey." The results showed that consumers considering elements such as "directors" and "online reviews" were found to be more active in movie consumption. The analysis of movie-watching frequency showed that the information considered when choosing a movie was different for high- and low-frequency movie viewers. Putting these factors together suggests that movie consumption can vary according to an individual's cultural capital, preferences, and their degree of movie information awareness. While existing studies have mostly analyzed the determinants of box office performance, the significance of the present study is its empirical analysis of individual movie information in terms of transaction cost. Based on the results above, it can be inferred that the cyclical structure of trading expenses influences movie consumption and, once preferences are formed through a certain level of consumption, the trading cost expenses decrease, which results in increasing consumption. Therefore, film makers need to establish and execute marketing strategies that appropriately use movie information so that consumers can reduce the trading costs necessary for movie watching.
Assuming that the whole meaning of a document is a composition of the meanings of each part, this paper proposes to study the automatic grading of movie reviews which contain sentimental expressions. This will be accomplished by calculating the values of semantic segments and performing data classification for each review. The ARSSA(The Automatic Rating System for Sentiment analysis using an Appraisal dictionary) system is an effort to model decision making processes in a manner similar to that of the human mind. This aims to resolve the discontinuity between the numerical ranking and textual rationalization present in the binary structure of the current review rating system: {rate: review}. This model can be realized by performing analysis on the abstract menas extracted from each review. The performance of this system was experimentally calculated by performing a 10-fold Cross-Validation test of 1000 reviews obtained from the Naver Movie site. The system achieved an 85% F1 Score when compared to predefined values using a predefined appraisal dictionary.
A movie is a fiction made on a basis of an author's and a writer's imagination, but all sorts of properties mixed with each other and most realistically expresses the era which becomes the background of a movie and acts as a carrier that connects designers with consumers. Thus, this study was carried out to review how the fashion products that designer's intention and commercial value added are expressed in collections by comparing and analysing the costumes in the movie "The Great Gatsby" that described the life of America's upper-class in 1920s and the 04 S/S Y&Kei collection which were proceeding after getting inspiration from this movie. For this, literature materials were inspected in order to make a theoretical review on social and cultural background and costumes history background in 1920s and the photo materials on movie costume were collected and analysed using DVD video captures, as well as the photo materials on 04 S/S Y&Kei were collected and analyzed through the institute providing domestic fashion information. The following conclusion was deduced through this study. First, in 1920s which becomes the background of this study, the slim shape of Flapper which looks like a young and boy became an ideal figure condition and the straight silhouette with low waist line and the short skirt that rose to knee was popular. Second, as a result of analysing movie costume by classifying it in silhouette, colors, and materials, straight silhouette of low waistline with a near colored - tone seen in the pastel series, including white, beige, pink, and gray was mainly constituted and the metal colors like silver and gold were used. As a material, chiffon, satin, velvet, flower patterned prints, and beads were used, which represented luxurious life of women in the upper classes. Third, as a result of comparing and analysing, it turned out that there was a similarity. However, in dress collection for a heroine, some dissimilarity differentiated from a movie costumes was found out in that the dresses in collection expressed moderate beauty and modernism and elegant beauty at the same time by matching a variety of materials and using black color.
This study aims to understand distribution of the sentimental words on each genre and find relationship between box office performance and sentimental words in movie review using 673 movies that have more than 1,000 reviews. For the analysis, crawling movie reviews and made data was composed movie genre, movie name, sales, attendance, screen, normal attendance, 7 sentimental words. For analysis results, we used correlation analysis and Parallel coordinates. As a results, First, the highest box office value of the genre is comedy and the lowest box office value of the genre is horror through analyze box office on each genre. Secondly, Movie genre of fantasy feel a lot of boring emotion and Movie genre of SF feel a lot of anger emotion even if 'Happy' and 'Surprise' have highest sentiment value on every genre. Third, We found 'Anger' increase sentimental value when 'Disgust' increase sentimental value and 'Surprise' decrease sentimental value when 'Happy' increase sentimental value through analyze correlation relationship between sentimental words using total data. Fourth, We found 'Happy' have linear relationship between box office and 'Fear' have non-linear relationship between box office through analyze sentimental words according to box office performance.
This study examined the characteristics of movie reviews based on emotional expressions, using the structural analysis. Major results were as follows; firstly, the most cited emotional expression was 'fun'. Fun was the important discriminator for evaluating movies. Secondly, cluster analysis results found that although Korean movies were clustered by many emotional expressions such as fun, immersion and impression, foreign movies were grouped by joust an emotional expression including fun. Internet users tended to divide foreign movie into two kinds of movies such as fun movie and boring movies.
