Objective: The control of psychrotrophic bacteria causing milk spoilage and illness due to toxic compounds is an important issue in the dairy industry. In South Korea, Gangwon-do province is one of the coldest terrains in which eighty percent of the area is mountainous regions, and mainly plays an important role in the agriculture and dairy industries. The purposes of this study were to analyze the indigenous microbiota of raw milk in Gangwon-do and accurately investigate a putative microbial group causing deterioration in milk quality. Methods: We collected raw milk from the bulk tank of 18 dairy farms in the Hoengseong and Pyeongchang regions of Gangwon-do. Milk components were analyzed and the number of viable bacteria was confirmed. The V3 and V4 regions of 16S rRNA gene were amplified and sequenced on an Illumina Miseq platform. Sequences were then assigned to operational taxonomic units, followed by the selection of representative sequences using the QIIME software package. Results: The milk samples from Pyeongchang were higher in fat, protein, lactose, total solid, and solid non-fat, and bacterial cell counts were observed only for the Hoengseong samples. The phylum Proteobacteria was detected most frequently in both the Hoengseong and Pyeongchang samples, followed by the phyla Firmicutes and Actinobacteria. Notably, Corynebacterium, Pediococcus, Macrococcus, and Acinetobacter were significantly different from two regions. Conclusion: Although the predominant phylum in raw milk is same, the abundances of major genera in milk samples were different between Hoengseong and Pyeongchang. We assumed that these differences are caused by regional dissimilar farming environments such as soil, forage, and dairy farming equipment so that the quality of milk raw milk from Pyeongchang is higher than that of Hoengseong. These results could provide the crucial information for identifying the microbiota in raw milk of South Korea.

This study was conducted to supply basic data for restoration and management of forests in Civilian Control Zone, with surveying naturalized plants around abandoned military camps. The total study sites are 72 abandoned military camps, from Gosung in east region to Paju in west region of Civilian Control Zone. The naturalized index of total area is 12.6%, and naturalized index of east and middle regions are 12.1% and 8.4%. But its index of west region is 15.9%. These results are due to geographical characteristics. The east and middle regions are in steep mountainous districts, and so but west region is flat district, and so naturalized plants was imported by only army. But west region is in flat districts, and so imported method of naturalized plants is very various. The main naturalized plants are Ambrosia trifida and Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior in Civilian Control Zone. The main dispersion pattern of naturalized plants are gravity dispersion pattern ($D_4$) and wind and water dispersion pattern ($D_1$). The all naturalized plants are photophilic plants in survey sites. And so, if abandoned military camps are recovered to forests, the naturalized plants are disappeared because of the change of sunlight condition. So it is necessary to manage and recover forests, even if that area is Civilian Control Zone.
Cross-sectional studies of adults located in different regions were undertaken to measure changes in food intake and nutritional status. Representativeness of the selected areas was proven through a pilot study and an inquiry into some written materials, and those areas were as following: 1) Mountainous area 2) Farming area 3) Coastal Area 4) City Area The nutrition survey was undertaken by students of the College of Home Economics as follow: 60 children (out of the 25% given detailed examination) and their families were randomly selected for the nutrition survey. The survey team was composed of 30 students of the College of Home Economics. Each member of the survey team was assigned to make home visits to two families in order to obtain information on kinds and amounts of food consumed for three days. Degree of food consumption was measured by weighing the food was calculated in the same manner. Average adult unit for calories and protein in the four study areas was 0.81 and 0.98 with little variation. The total calories ranged from 2,114 Cal to 2,311 Cal. and the protein intake averaged from 57 gm to 67 gm. The calories taken by people of Kaejong were composed of carbohydrate (82% -87%), fat (3%-6%) and protein (10%-12%). Kaejong recorded a sufficient intake of fat and protein. All of the four study areas had a deficiency problem in intake of calcium, vitamin A. thiamine, riboflavin and ascorbic acid.
In order to investigate the epidemiological situation of intestinal parasite infections in Lao PDR, parasitological surveys were carried out on a national scale including 17 Provinces and the Vientiane Municipality. A total of 29,846 stool specimens were collected from primary schoolchildren in May 2000 June 2002 and examined once with the cellophane thick smear technique. The cumulative egg Positive rate For intestinal helminthes was 61.9%, BV species, the rate for As caris lumbricoides was 34.9%, hookworm 19.1%, Trichuris trichiura 25.8%,Opisthorchis viverrini 10.9%, Taenia spp. 0.6% and Hymenolepis spp. 0.2%. The northern mountainous regions suck as Phongsaly, Huaphan or Saysomboune Province showed higher prevalence(over 70%) of soil- transmitted helminthes. The regions along the Mekong River such as Khammuane, Saravaue or Savannakhet Province showed higher prevalence(over 20%)of fish-borne parasites. On the other hand, Schistosoma mekongi eggs were detected from1.7% of schoolchildren only in Champassak Province, a previously known endemic area. The highest prevalence was noted in Phongsaly Province(96.0%) and the lowest in Bolikhamxay Province(27.5%). An additional smal1-scale survey by cellophane anal swab detected Enterobius vermicularis eggs in 35.7% of 451 schoolchildren aged 6-8 in Khammuane, Vientiane, Champassak Province and the Vientiane Municipality. Meanwhile, the mean blood hemoglobin level of hootrworm-infected children was not lower than that of hookworm-uninfected children, suggesting that nutritional factors are more important than parasite infection per se. Nevertheless, the above results indicate that a nationwide parasite control project is necessary to reduce possible morbidity of parasitic diseases in the country.

This study carefully selected weather and plantation-related records from Sinjeung "Donggukyeojiseungram"("新增東國輿地勝覽") and "Taekliji"("擇里志") and examined their climate and vegetational significance as research ancient Korean documents. Both documents include several counts of detailed descriptions of and the interest in the natural environment and ecology shown by the residents of the region in the 14th and 15th centuries and the 18th century. Utilizing these records is believe to understand and restore the meteorological environment, regional climate characteristics, climate in mountainous regions, temperature and precipitative distribution, and vegetation of the south coastal region and the southern, central and northern regions of those times. Such prospect, this author hopes, will spark specific discussion of research methodology of ecological landscape and physical geography based on ancient Korean documents.

An algific talus slope is composed of broken rocks with vents connected to an ice cave, releasing cool air in summer and relatively warmer air in winter to maintain a more stable microclimate all year round. Such geological features create a very unusual and delicate ecosystem. Although there are around 25 major algific talus slopes in Korea, lichen ecology of these areas had not been investigated to date. In this study, we report the first exploration of lichen diversity and ecology at an algific talus slope, Jangyeol-ri, in Korea. A total of 37 specimens were collected over 2017-2018. Morphological and sequencing analysis revealed 27 species belonging to 18 genera present in the area. Of particular interest among these species was Solorina saccata, as it has previously not been reported in Korea and most members of genus Solorina are known to inhabit alpine regions of the Northern Hemisphere. We provide here a taxonomic key for S. saccata alongside molecular phylogenetic analyses and prediction of potential habitats in South Korea. Furthermore, regions in South Korea potentially suitable for Solorina spp. were predicted based on climatic features of known habitats around the globe. Our results showed that the suitable areas are mostly at high altitudes in mountainous areas where the annual temperature range does not exceed 26.6 ℃. Further survey of other environmental conditions determining the suitability of Solorina spp. should lead to a more precise prediction of suitable habitats and trace the origin of Solorina spp. in Korea.

Extreme climate events can have a large impact on human life by hampering social, environmental, and economic development. Global circulation models (GCMs) are the widely used numerical models to understand the anticipated future climate change. However, different GCMs can project different future climates due to structural differences, varying initial boundary conditions and assumptions about the physical phenomena. The multi-model ensemble (MME) approach can improve the uncertainties associated with the different GCM outcomes. In this study, a comprehensive rating metric was used to select the best-performing GCMs out of 11 CMIP5 and 13 CMIP6 GCMs, according to their skills in terms of four temporal and five spatial performance indices, in replicating the 21 extreme climate indices during the baseline (1975-2017) in South Korea. The MME data were derived by averaging the simulations from all selected GCMs and three top-ranked GCMs. The random forest (RF) algorithm was also used to derive the MME data from the three top-ranked GCMs. The RF-derived MME data of the three top-ranked GCMs showed the highest performance in simulating the baseline extreme climate which was subsequently used to project the future extreme climate indices under both the representative concentration pathway (RCP) and the socioeconomic concentration pathway scenarios (SSP). The extreme cold and warming indices had declining and increasing trends, respectively, and most extreme precipitation indices had increasing trends over the period 2031-2100. Compared to all scenarios, RCP8.5 showed drastic changes in future extreme climate indices. The coasts in the east, south and west had stronger warming than the rest of the country, while mountain areas in the north experienced more extreme cold. While extreme cold climatology gradually declined from north to south, extreme warming climatology continuously grew from coastal to inland and northern mountainous regions. The results showed that the socially, environmentally and agriculturally important regions of South Korea were at increased risk of facing the detrimental impacts of extreme climatology.

The purpose of this study is to examine the spatial characteristics of relationships between the intensity of extreme climate events driven by typhoons and the magnitude of economic damages at local municipality scales across the Republic of Korea for the recent 15-year period (2000~2014). As results, it is observed that the intensity of extreme temperature events such as heavy rainfall and gusty wind accounts for 50% of the damages magnitude across Korea, while the correlation between the two at the Si-Gun municipality level regionally varies. Positive correlations between the intensity of heavy rainfall events and typhoon damages are observed in the southeastern regions of Taebaek-Sobaek mountain ridges, while such statistically-significant patterns are not detected in the northwestern region. In contrast, statistically-significant positive correlations between the strength of gusty winds and damages are found in most of regions except for some interior regions and northeastern mountainous regions. Classification maps of major extreme climate event types (heavy rainfall-prevailing type, gusty wind-prevailing type, and their combined type) leading to typhoon damages at the Si-Gun municipality scales provided in this study may help local administrations to make the optimized policies for typhoon damage mitigation.
The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between rice yield and climate elements in Daegu (southern plain area) and Andong (inland mountainous area) regions. Over the past 20 years, rice yield has increased in both regions. The rice yield of middle and mid-late maturing cultivars in the recent 5 years increased by about 10% and 18%, respectively, compared to that produced in the early 2000s in the Daegu region. In the Andong region, the rice yield of mid-late maturing rice cultivars in the recent 5 years was higher by about 7% than that of the early 2000s. The number of panicles per hill and grain ripening rate significantly affected rice yield in mid-late maturing cultivars. In addition, the grain weight and grain ripening rate significantly affected rice production in middle maturing cultivars grown in the Daegu region. With regard to the middle maturing cultivars, the relationship between grain weight and rice yield had a positive significant correlation in both regions. To understand the effect of climate factors on rice yield, the milled rice yield of several rice cultivars produced over the past 20 years (1999-2018) at both locations, Daegu and Andong, were evaluated. The rice yields increased owing to long sunshine duration during the grain filling stage in the Daegu region. In Andong, rising maximum temperature during the vegetative stage increased rice yield of early and mid-late maturing cultivars. Long sunshine hours increased yield of mid-late maturing cultivars in both regions.

The outbreaks of blast, bacterial blight and viral diseases have been increasing in early maturing rice cultivating areas in the central northern regions, recently. As the occurrence of sudden insects pests and disasters increases due to global climate warming, it is urgent to develop a variety of disaster-tolerant, high-quality varieties in response. This study was carried out to elucidate the characteristics of early-maturing, high-quality and multiple disease resistant rice variety, Cheolweon109 that was adapted to cultivation in the mid-mountainous regions of the central northern regions. Cheolweon109 was derived from a cross between Suweon546, medium maturing variety, and Sangju44 which is early maturing and resistant to blast, bacterial blight and rice stripe virus. The heading date of Cheolweon109 was July 30, 3 days later than Odae. The culm length of Cheolweon109 was 79 cm, which was about 5 cm taller than Odae, and the ripening ratio was 85.1%, which was 10% higher than that of Odae. This variety had 5.54 MT/ha of milled rice productivity, which was 99% of the Odae. Although Cheolweon109 was tall, it was strong against lodging. It was strong against bacterial blight (K1, K2, K3 race), rice stripe virus, and the pre-harvest sprouting which rate was 2.4%. The appearance of the grains of rice was clean, the glossiness was 70.6, and the head rice ratio was 95.3% high. Because Cheolweon109 had superior disease resistance, disaster resistance, and high quality than Odae, it was expected that can be used to expand the diversity of early maturing and high-quality rice varieties in central northern regions.
