  • In this study, the HAPs(Harzard Air Pollutants) emission factor level of Starex and Grand Carnival was tested using PEMS (Portable Emissions Measurement System) on real road driving. As a result of RDE (Real Driving Emission test), the overall vehicle speed pattern showed similar characteristics. The real-road driving test at constant speed revealed emission factor is inversely proportional relationship to constant speed. Results of accelerating with speed limit on the real-road were shown as followings; Uran (less than 45 km/h)>Rural (<45 km/h, less than 80 km/h)>Motorway (>80 km/h). Moreover, the sudden acceleration and deceleration in driving at high speed was the increasing factor to the HAPs emission factor. This tendency is considered to be influenced by the operating environment on real roads.

  • This study examines the ramp-up analysis techniques which have been introduced till now and presents the strength and weakness of each method. The applicability of each technique was reviewed using a case study involving the data of Cheonan-Nonsan motorway usages where seasonal variations of the data were removed. The results showed that all the techniques except F-test have the same ramp-up period of 12 months. The level of Tamp-up was 65%-72% compared to that of the real traffic volume at the beginning of opening. The demand recovered to the stabilized level as time goes on. To apply the methodology to practical demand forecasts actual surveys of real data of traffic demand should be performed. With these efforts to the patronage ramp-up, more reliable demand analyses can be accompanied.

  • PURPOSES: The objectives of this study are to develop a new cold-applied crack sealant and to evaluate its properties and field applicability by comparing with other conventionally used crack sealants. METHODS : A new cold-applied crack sealant was developed by using neoprene latex to improve material properties. The fundamental properties such as viscosity, residue %, penetration, and softening point of the developed crack sealant were tested by TxDOT criteria to evaluate crack sealing capability. Moreover, the performance of the developed cold-applied crack sealant was evaluated under both laboratory and field conditions. In the laboratory, the bond property was evaluated using the developed cold-applied crack sealant and conventional hot-applied crack sealant by the bond-properties test standardized under ASTM D 6690. In the field, test sections were constructed on three areas: a trunk road, bus-only lane, and motorway, with the developed crack sealant and three conventional crack sealants. After construction, early field-inspection was performed on the test sections. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS : Overall, the developed cold-applied crack sealant demonstrates reasonable storage stability, durability, and bond property compared to conventional hot-applied crack sealants. From the test sections, it was established that the developed cold-applied crack sealant does not pose construction issues. Moreover, the early performance was verified through field inspection. However, as the field inspection was conducted a week after the construction, it is necessary to conduct an inspection of performance from a long-term point of view.

  • The object ofthis study was to test for STORMSYS process that composed Catch Basin and Stormsys(three units: vortex solids separator, filter media bed and vegetated filter strips). It could be applied to treat the first-flush non-point pollution materials on the road(especially, motorway). This study investigated that the runoff characteristics of non-point pollutions containing the heavy metal(Fe, Zn and Cu) by rainfall showed relatively high pollution concentration in the early-stage storm runoff on the road, which seems to be caused by the vehicular traffic, and showed the rapid reduction of pollution concentration on the basis of about 5mm rainfall volume. As the number of the non-rainy days were increased, the pollution concentration by storm runoff was increased, also. As a test result of this process, the average removal efficiency of BOD, $COD_{mn}$, SS, T-N and T-P over the testing period were 92.7%,88.6%,97.4%,93.0% and 93.3%, respectively. Also, the average removal efficiency of n-Hexane, Fe, Zn and Cu were 86.7%, 96.1%, 84.4% and 78.4%, respectively. As shown in the characteristics of storm runoff, the non-point pollution materials have high pollution concentration in the early-stage storm runoff on the road, the installation of STORMSYS process is expected to reduce considerable amount of non-point pollutions.

  • Retention ponds have been dug along some of the motorways in France to minimize environmental pollution by keeping pollutants from spreading over the surrounding area. In order to study heavy metal pollution and diagenetic behaviour of sediments, eight core samples were collected from the bottom of a retention pond located along the A-71 motorway in Sologne. The metal concentrations in interstitial waters and extractable metal concentrations in sediment layers using sequential chemical extraction method were determined. The depth distributions of Pb, Zn and Cd concentrations in interstitial water and particulate sediments were studied, and distribution coefficients (KD) were also determined to investigate the environmental mobility of these elements. In addition. the index of geoaccumulation and the Fe-normalized enrichment factor were calculated to differentiate the natural accumulation from the anthropogenic pollution. The vertical concentration profiles of heavy metals in core sediments indicate that surface enrichments (0~2 cm) of Pb, Zn, Cd and organic carbon were always observed at each core sample, due to the early diagenesis. However, the major factor contributing to the accumulation of Cd at the sediment surface is attributed to the dissolution of Cd from polluted roadside soil during periods of rainstorms and its subsequent redeposition on the sediment surface after being carried to the retention pond. A comparison of the KD values indiactes that a decrease in the KD values for Pb and Zn was observed with depth while KD values for Cd increase. According to the KD values. the relative mobility of studied metals was determined as following: Mn>Zn>Cd>Pb, for the upper layer, and Mn>Cd>Zn>Pb, for the lower layers.

  • The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MoLIT) and the Korean Automobile Testing and Research Institute (KATRI) are supporting the development of Lv.3 automated vehicle (hereinafter, AV) technology by constructing an automated driving pilot city (as known as K-City) equipped with total 5 evaluation environments (urban, motorway, suburban, community road, and autonomous parking facility) which is a test bed exclusively for AV (2017~2018). An upgrade project is in a progress to materialize harsh environments such as bad weather (rain, fog, etc.) and reproduction of communication jamming (GPS blocking, etc.) with the purpose of supporting the development of Lv.4 connected & automated vehicle (hereinafter, CAV) technology (2019~2022). We intend to proactively establish a national level standard for CAV test-bed and test road requirements, test method, etc. for establishment of a road map for the construction of the test bed which is being promoted step by step and analyze and, when required, benchmark the case of China that has announced and is utilizing it. Through this, we plan to define standardized requirements (evaluation facility, evaluation system, etc.) on the test bed for the development of Lv.4/4+ CAV technology and utilize the same for the design and construction of a test bed, establishment of a road map for the construction of a real car-based test environment related to the support for autonomous driving service substantiation, etc. through provision of an evaluation environment utilizing K-City, and the establishment of a K-City upgrade strategies, etc.

  • Recently, an emission test procedure using a portable emissions measurement system(PEMS) has received much attention as an effective means of controlling real driving emissions from light-duty diesel vehicles. The PEMS-based test procedure will be implemented from 2017 in Europe and Korea as a complementary test procedure for certification and regulation. In the present study, on-road NOx emissions were measured for four kinds of Euro 5 Korean light-duty diesel vehicles under real driving conditions, including urban, rural, and motorway test routes. The real driving emission characteristics were evaluated using both a moving averaging window(MAW) and the weighted emission method(WEM). The evaluated NOx emission results (under real driving conditions) from the MAW and WEM showed similar tendencies for the test vehicles and routes, while exceeding the certification emission limit by 1.8~8.5 and 2.0~10.6 times, respectively.

  • The urban highway, which is a motorway constructed to solve traffic issues, has the characteristic of extremely high damage to life during traffic accidents because the speed of vehicles is higher than typical roadways. In particular, because traffic accidents involving serious injuries hold a very important place among overall traffic accidents, analysis on factors affecting the occurrence of traffic accidents involving serious injuries must be considered with priority when establishing a reduction measure. Therefore, the study built a model that was capable of distinguishing the degree of the factors as part of microscopic analysis for investigating the complex effect of many elements concerning the occurrence of traffic accidents involving serious injuries in urban highways. The results are as follows. First, discriminant model showed a comparatively high level in overall accuracy rates, and, considering the correlation ratio, the models were determined to be valid, as all characteristics of the factors were clearly distinguished. Second, the problems of traffic accidents involving serious injuries on urban highways according to each factor, were clearly drawn out through the discriminant model. Third, the improvement measure for the problems drawn out from the discriminant models were clearly proposed.

  • To survey trail damage and vegetational change around trail at Bukhan Mountain National Park in Korea, field survey was executed over Bukhan mountain district during August, 1987. Trail damage was surveyed for he section of 7.18km from Ui valley to Jeongnung valley in which user's density was high. Ground vegetation was surveyed with a belt-transect method from trail edge to forest and edge species were surveyed with a belt method along trail edge. Interrelation between trail damage and user's density was not dear. Damage class II of trail showed 23.9% of the surveyed section and class III showed 8.0% and class II and III of natural trail showed 19.7% and those of facilitated trail showed 12.3%. The length of damage class II and III requiring readjustment were estimated as 3.65 km and 1.22km from the main trail course of 15.3km at Bukhan mountain district. In case of no intervention to forest by users, vegetational change around trails was appeared up to 6-8 m from trailside. But in case of intervention to forest by users, vegetational change was not coincident with the change of soil hardness and was diverse locally. Quercus mongolica, Lespedeza cyrtobotrya and Rbo-dodendron mucronulatum were appeared as Raunkiaer frequency class E, and Weigela subsessilis. Lespedeza maximowiczii, Rhododendron schlippenbachii and Sorbus alnifolid were appeared as class D at trail edge of ridge-Quercus mongolica was appeared as class E and Rhododenderon mucrounulatium. • The tollbooths of a main motorway toll plaza are usually operated proactively responding to the variations of traffic demands of two-type vehicles, i.e. cars and the other (heavy) vehicles, respectively. In this vein, it is one of key elements to forecast accurate traffic volumes for the two vehicle types in advanced tollgate operation. Unfortunately, it is not easy for existing univariate short-term prediction techniques to simultaneously generate the two-vehicle-type traffic demands in literature. These practical and academic backgrounds make it one of attractive research topics in Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) forecasting area to forecast the future traffic volumes of the two-type vehicles at an acceptable level of accuracy. In order to address the shortcomings of univariate short-term prediction techniques, a Multiple In-and-Out (MIO) forecasting model to simultaneously generate the two-type traffic volumes is introduced in this article. The MIO model based on a non-parametric approach is devised under the on-line access conditions of large-scale historical data. In a feasible test with actual data, the proposed model outperformed Kalman filtering, one of a widely-used univariate models, in terms of prediction accuracy in spite of multivariate prediction scheme.
