  • This paper deals with a comparison between the secondary Halbach array and conventional array of permanent magnets(PMs) in air-core type linear synchronous motor(LSM). Two types of PMLSM are analyzed and compared, with reference to the following parameters as variables: magnetic field, thrust and back emf.

  • Free-piston engine system is a new type energy converter which uses a linear motion of piston by using linear generator. In free-piston engine system, the piston is not connected to a crank-shaft. The major advantages of free-piston engine system are high efficiency and low mechanical loss from the absence of motion conversion devices. Linear generator of free-piston engine system is used as generator and starting motor. In design step, considering of back-emf and detent force characteristics for generating mode and thrust and control characteristics for starting mode is needed. In this research, generating mode of flat-type linear generator and tubular-type linear generator is analyzed by finite element analysis method and starting mode of both type linear generators is analyzed by using capability curve. Capability curve is plotted from electrical parameters of both type linear generator and motion profile is calculated from mechanical parameters.

Optimal Design of a PMLSM with 9 Pole 10 Slot for Detent Force Reduction (9극 10슬롯 구조의 영구자석 선형 동기 전동기의 디텐트력 저감을 위한 최적설계)

  • Detent force of a permanent magnet linear motor(PMLSM) consist of cogging and drag forces, and should be minimized for high precision control purpose applications. This paper shows that the cogging force can be reduced effectively by employing 9 pole 10 slot structure. The drag force is minimized by optimizing the total length and shape of the exterior teeth of armature core simultaneously by using($1+{\lambda}$) evolution strategy coupled with response surface method. After optimization, the optimized PMLSM is proven to reduce 95% and 92.6% of the cogging and total detent forces, respectively, and give 12% and 6.4% higher Back-emf and thrust force, respectively, compared with a conventional 12 pole 9 slot structure under the same condition. Additionally, Simulation results by the proposed optimum design are verified by the experiment results.

  • In this paper, a synchronous permanent magnet planar motor (SPMPM) with Halbach array is proposed for its performance improvement. The magnetization and flux density distribution are obtained by magnet scalar potential; the characteristics such as back-EMF and thrust are evaluated. It can be concluded that the analysis of SPMPM with Halbach magnet array is credible and feasible.
