  • The die easting process was used to manufacture a motor housing for automobile. Specially automobile parts were required light and high strength. Therefore simulations have been carried out die casting process of motor housing. In this paper, we investigated about characteristics of the die casted motor housing with HPDC(High Pressure Die Casting) process. Also the MAGMAsoft was used as computer simulation code and used material was ADC12(Aluminum Die Casting Alloy). We present the results of filling behavior and solidification process of a motor housing cast. The analysis results obtained about filling behavior and solidification of cast showed good agreement with test results.

  • In this paper, research on the mold design of motor housing produced by the HPDC process was conducted using computer simulations and experiments. Recently, automobile parts have been required to be light and have high strength. The die casting process was used to manufacture automotive motor housings. In the die casting process, the control of casting defects is very important. However, it has usually depended on the experience of the foundry engineer. For the analysis of the manufacturing process of motor housing, the finite element method is applied. Through the simulations using commercial software, the filling pattern and product defects could be confirmed. The analysis results obtained from the filling behavior of the casting process agreed with the experimental results. The computer simulation results of filling behavior were reflected in the optimal mold design of motor housing.

  • In many practical applications of the centrifugal fan, the impeller-diffuser interaction noise is considered as a main source of fan noise. The housing for an electric motor is also expected to play an important role on noise propagation because of its complicated configuration. This study investigates the impeller-diffuser interaction noise and its sources by computing three-dimensional, incompressible flow field of the centrifugal fan in motor housing. The effect of motor case on fan noise characteristic is then investigated using the Brinkman penalization method, while the noise source associated with impeller-diffuser interaction is mathematically modeled. It is found that the present methodology combined with mathematical description of noise source provides a fairly good agreement with the experimental results, indicating that the motor housing has significant effect on noise characteristics. Finally, aeroacoustic noise prediction for various impeller-diffuser blade count ratios is conducted for noise reduction.

  • The magnetic-jack type CRDM withdraws or inserts a control rod assembly from/to the reactor core to control the core reactivity. The CRDM housings form not only the path of the electromagnetic field but also the pressure boundary of a nuclear reactor, and a periodic in-service inspection should be carried out if there are welded or flange jointed parts on the pressure boundary. The in-service inspection is a time-consuming process during the reactor refueling, and moreover it is difficult to perform the inspection over the reactor head. A magnetic motor housing is applied for the current SMART CRDM and has several welding joints, however a nonmagnetic motor housing with fewer or no welding joints may improve the operational efficiency of the nuclear reactor by avoiding or simplifying the in-service inspection process. Prior to the development, the magnetic field transfer efficiency of the nonmagnetic housing was required to be assessed. It was verified and optimized by the electromagnetic analysis of the lifting force estimation. Magnetic flux rings were adopted to improve the efficiency. In this paper, the design and optimization process of a nonmagnetic motor housing with the magnetic flux rings for the SMART CRDM are introduced and the analyses results are discussed.

  • The in-wheel motor used in green car was designed and constructed for an electric direct-drive traction system. It is difficult to connect cooling water piping because the in-wheel motor is located within the wheel structure. In the air cooling structure for the in-wheel motor, a outer surface on the housing is provided with cooling grooves to increase the heat transfer area. In this study, we carried out the analysis on the fluid flow and thermal characteristics of the in-wheel motor under the effects of motor speed and heat generation. In order to check the problem of heat release, the analysis has been performed using conjugate heat transfer (conduction and convection). As a result, flow fields and temperature distribution inside the in-wheel motor were obtained for base speed condition (1250 rpm) and maximum speed condition (5000 rpm). Also, the thermo-flow characteristics analysis of in-wheel motor for vehicles was performed in consideration of ram air effect. Therefore, we checked the feasibility of the air cooling for the housing geometry having cooling grooves and investigated the cooling performance enhancement.

  • Recently, the automobile of the future will be able to substitute an electric vehicle for an internal combustion engine, so the following research is actively in the process of advancing. A traction motor is one of the core parts which compose the electric vehicle. Especially, it is difficult to connect cooling water piping to an in-wheel motor because the in-wheel motor is located within the wheel structure. This structure has disadvantage for closed type and air cooling, so the cooling design of motor housing and internal in-wheel motor is important. In this study, thermo-flow analysis of the in-wheel motor for vehicles was performed in consideration of ram air effect. In order to improve cooling efficiency of the motor, we variously changed geometries of housing and internal shape. As a result, we found that the cooling efficiency was most excellent, in case the cooling groove direction was same with air flow direction and arranged densely. Furthermore, we investigated the cooling performance enhancement with respect to variable geometries of internal in-wheel motor.

  • Purposes of this research are convenience of manufacture, quality sophistication and reduction of a/s' ratio by that improve several shortcomings of existing steel housing The Housing of head is changed existent steel housing to ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) copolymer housing and its shape is changed. It does not need that paint housing by paint. so We may not care scar at storage or manufacture. The fast work speed and A/S is possible by combining a safety plate and a housing by volt and spring washer. When disjoint head part, there is no damage of safety plate and housing. Noise is disappeared by resonance phenomenon in early rpm at motor moving. When neck part of housing and a middle pipe are connected by drill nasa, the work is easier Also, there is sense of security little more catching motor in housing The improvement accomplished much improvements including light weight of head part.

  • The TMS(Thermal Management System) heater in a fuel cell vehicle has been developed to prevent a decline of fuel cell durability and cold start durability. Main functions of the COD(Cathode Oxygen Depletion) heater are depletion of oxygen in a cathode as heat energy and consumption of electric power for rapid warming up of a fuel cell stack. This paper covers subjects including the design specification of a heater, heater controller for detection of overheat and reliability assessment including coolant pressure cycle test of a heater. To verify the design concept, burst pressure and deformation analysis of plastic housing were carried out. Also, temperature distribution analysis of heater surface and coolant inside of housing were carried out to verify the design concept. By designing the plastic housing instead of a steel housing, the 30% weight lightening and 50% cost reduction were attained. A module-based design of a TMS system including a heater or reducing the watt density of a heater is a problem to be solved in the near future work.
