  • In this paper, a new pixel decimation algorithm for the estimation of motion vector is proposed. In traditional methods, the computational cost can be reduced since only part of the pixels are used for motion vector calculation. But these methods limits the accuracy ofmotion vector because of the same reason. We derive a selection criteria of subsampled pixels that can reduce the probablity of false motion vector detection based on stochastic point of view. By using this criteria, a new pixel decimation algorithm that can reduce the prediction error with similar computational cost is presented. The simulation results applied to standard images haveshown that the proposed algorithm has less mean absolute prediction error than conventional pixel decimation algorithm.

  • Motion estimation is a core part of most video compression systems since it directly affects the output video quality and the encoding time. The full search (FS) technique gives the highest visual quality but has the problem of a significant computational load. To solve this problem, we present in this paper a modified median (MMED) operation and advanced search strategies for fast motion estimation. The proposed MMED operation includes a temporally co-located motion vector (MV) to select an appropriate initial candidate. Moreover, we introduce a search procedure that reduces the number of thresholds and simplifies the early termination conditions for the determination of a final MV. The experimental results show that the proposed approach achieves substantial speedup compared with the conventional methods including the motion vector field adaptive search technique (MVFAST) and predictive MVFAST (PMVFAST). The proposed algorithm also improves the PSNR values by increasing the correlation between the MVs, compared with the FS method.

  • In this paper, we proposes an adaptive method for reducing the computational overhead of fine-to-coarse MRME at the finest resolution level by considering for the spatial and spectral characteristics between wavelet decomposition levels simultaneously. As we know, there is high correlation between the adjacent blocks and it can give the very important clue to estimate motion at finest level. So, in this paper, using the initial motion vector and the adjacent motion vector in the coarsest level, we determine the optimal direction that will be minimized the estimation error in the finest level. In that direction, we define the potential searching region within the full searching region that is caused to increase much computational overhead in the FtC method. Last, in that region, we process the efficient 2-step motion estimation. and estimate the motion vector at finest resolution level. And then, this determined motion vector is scaled to coarser resolutions. As simulation result, this method is similar to computational complexity of the CtF MRME method and very significantly reduces that of the FtC MRME method. In addition, they provide higher quality than CtF MRME, both visually and quantitatively

  • Efficient multi-view coding techniques are needed to reduce the complexity of multi-view video which increases in proportion to the number of cameras. To reduce the complexity and maintain image quality and bit-rates, an motion estimation method and temporal prediction structure are proposed in this paper. The proposed motion estimation method exploits the characteristic of motion vector distribution and the motion direction and motion size of the block to place search points and decide the search patten adaptively. And the proposed prediction structure divides every GOP to decide the maximum index of hierarchical B layer and the number of pictures of each B layer. Experiment results show that the complexity reduction of the proposed temporal prediction structure and motion estimation method over hierarchical B pictures prediction structure and TZ search method which are used in JMVC(Joint Multi-view Video Coding) reference model can be up to 45∼70% while maintaining similar video quality and bit rates.

  • In this paper, we propose fast motion estimation algorithm. Local statistics of a motion vector is highly correlated to motion vectors of its neighboring blocks. According to the property, block-based motion search range is adaptively determined in order to reduce unnecessary search points. Based on the determined search range, motion vector is obtained by variable step search motion estimation. Experimental results show that comparing to Full search motion estimation, the motion searching points of proposed algorithm is reduced as much as $98\%$. Moreover, PSNR and Bit Rate are almost same to Full search method.

  • In this paper, we propose novel motion field estimation method using U-disparity map and forward-backward error removal in vehicles environment. Generally, in an image obtained from a camera attached in a vehicle, a motion vector occurs according to the movement of the vehicle. but this motion vector is less accurate by effect of surrounding environment. In particular, it is difficult to extract an accurate motion vector because of adjacent pixels which are similar each other on the road surface. Therefore, proposed method removes road surface by using U-disparity map and performs optical flow about remaining portion. forward-backward error removal method is used to improve the accuracy of the motion vector. Finally, we predict motion of the vehicle by applying RANSAC(RANdom SAmple Consensus) from acquired motion vector and then generate motion field. Through experimental results, we show that the proposed algorithm performs better than old schemes.

  • Block-matching motion estimation plays an important role in video coding. In this paper, we propose an Efficient Search Algorithm for Fast Motion Estimation. The proposed algorithm detects motion variation for reducing computational complexity before determining motion vector. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has good performance than conventional algorithms through quantitative evaluation.

  • This paper presents a new fast motion estimation algorithm for multi-reference frames. We first analyze the experimental results of the successive elimination algorithm, which is a fast version of full search algorithm, being applied to Multi-reference frames. Based on the analysis, a new scheme for alleviating its computational burden is introduced. In the proposed method, the motion vector for the immediately previous reference frame is found by applying the successive elimination algorithm, while the motion vector for other reference frames is estimated by extrapolation of the already obtained motion vector. Adaptively restricting the motion search area to the local area centered on the estimated motion vector, the proposed method provides dramatic computational complexity reduction but slight quality degradation. The proposed method is evaluated by experiments for some image sequences.

  • In this paper, a transcoding method that transforms MPEG-4 video bitstream coded in 30 Hz frame rate into H.264 video bitstream of 15 Hz frame rate is proposed. The block modes and motion vectors in MPEG-4 is utilized in H.264 for block mode conversion and motion vector (MV) interpolation methods. The proposed three types of MV interpolation method can be used without performing full motion estimation in H.264. The proposed transcoder reduces computation amount for full motion estimation in H.264 and provides good quality of H.264 video at low bitrates. In experimental results, the proposed methods achieves 3.2-4 times improvement in computational complexity compared to the cascaded pixel-domain transcoding, while the PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) is degraded with 0.2-0.9dB depending on video sizes.

  • The techniques for the estimation of motion vector from the image sequence assume implicitly that the intensity of image is constant through the time. But this assumption can be distored by such causes as the added noises and the sub-pel motion following the sampling, and the errors can be generated on the motion estimation by the change of intensity. In this paper, we analyzed theoretically the effect of the change of intensity by the noise on the motion estimation with the white Gaussian noise. We know a fact that the signal may be fluctuated to reduce the effect of the noise and so the sampling rate have to make down. Also we confirmed the theoretically analysis through the experiments which investigated the relation between the noises and the sampling rates.
