  • The purposes of this study were to investigate the quality of toys, to explore children's and mothers' perception of toys, and to present future directions for toy manufacturers, children and mothers. The subjects were 127 6-year-old, 143 8-year-old, 151 10-year-old children and 383 mothers. In addition, 113 toys were selected for analysis. Data were gathered through both observations and questionnaires. The results showed that most toys were appropriate to stimulate cognitive development. However, for dolls, 90% of them were in the shape of Caucasions. Children who were accustomed to such dolls may develop the tendency to favor a Western aesthetic standard. War toys, such as guns and robots may provoke aggression and violence. Mothers believed that toys should be helpful for the intellectual, social and physical development of children. While mothers were not satisfied with the quality of domestically produced toys, children generally liked them.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between parental attribution and self-perception in parenting roles according to parenting success or failure situations. A total of 138 mothers who have toddlers in Seoul and other big cities in Korea completed questionnaires, and data were analyzed by paired t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, Fisher's Z score, and multi-regression. The results are as follows: First, mothers in parenting success situations showed higher parental attribution than mothers in parenting failure situations. Second, correlations between parental attribution and self-perception in parenting roles turned out to be significantly different between parenting success situations and failure situations. Third, both internal attribution such as ability and effort, and external attribution such as child behavior and task difficulty, significantly predicted self-perception in parenting roles including equilibrium feeling, competence, satisfaction and parenting investment, especially in parenting failure situations. The implications of the difference in parental attribution between parenting success and failure situations have been discussed.

  • This study investigated for perception about particulate matter in daily lives of mothers who have children aged from three to five years old and the difference of perception after participating in forest experience programs. The data were compiled from 122 mothers of preschoolers composed by 61 mothers who participated in the forest experience and those who did not. 82.8 percent of 122 mothers were concerned with particulate matters, and 84.4 percent frequently checked information on particulate matters. However, they lacked knowledge, countermeasures, and active practice to reduce it. Awareness of forest and fine particulate matter was high among mothers who had participated in the forest experience, with a high positive perception of forest role and forest environment. Therefore, expanding the opportunity for mothers to actively experience forest will contribute not only the forest experience in infants being activated but also to improve harmful environment such as fine particulate matter.
