  • This study integrated mother's control behavior of child's misbehavior within social domain analysis and the framework of attributional models of social cognition. The purpose of this study was to identify, compare and contrast maternal attributions and control responses according to child's age and domains of social behavior, and to investigate that mother's social cognition factors(authoritarian attitude and self competence perception) influence material inference and responses for their child's acts. Then this study was to find out whether mother's attribution would mediate their socialization techniques. For empirical research, 654 mothers with 5.6 year old and 8.9 year old children as subjects answered the structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed by frequencies, t-test, oneway ANOVA, and multiple regression. The major findings were as follows: First, according to child's two domains of misbehavior, there were differences in mothers'attribution and control behavior. Also mothers regarded older child's behavior as more dispositional cause and as more deserving of punishment than younger child's. Second, mother's authoritarian altitude of parenting, self-competence perception, and educational level were significantly related to mother's judgment. Third, the more authoritarian attitude mothers had, the more dispositional factor of children they attributed. And the lower self-competence mothers perceived. the more internal factor of child they attributed. Finally, maternal attributions and control responses are interrelated. When they attributed their children's misdeeds to internal dispositions, they respond with more stronger control behavior. The results suggested maternal social cognition mediate socialization behavior.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to describe the perception of parental sex role held by university students and to examine differences in perception of parental sex role according to student characteristics. Method: The participants were 336 university students in Gangreung city. The instrument of parental sex role was developed by the researcher and consisted of 3 subcategories; general parent role, parental sex role as a father and parental sex role as a mother. Results: The most positive item of parental sex role as a father is 'the Father's role is teaching about the value of society'. The most positive item of parental sex role as a mother is 'the Mother's role is to be a counselor or friend'. There were significant differences in perception of a father's role according to sex, type of college, fathers who lived with student during childhood, the relationship with the parent, the plan of marriage & having a child, responsibility of childrearing, and the need for education for the parental role. There were significant differences in perception of the mother's role according to sex, grade, type of college, birth order, type of family, persons who lived with student during childhood, the relationship with the parent, plan of marriage & having a child, responsibility of child-rearing, and the need for education for the parental role. • The subjects of this study on the effects of mother's personality on her childrearing behaviors were 1060 mothers and their $5^{th}$ grade children. Results indicated that maternal childrearing behaviors were related to her personality traits. The effects of mother's personality on her childrearing behaviors varied by sex of child, reporter (mother/child), and childrearing behavior factors. Mother-reported childrearing behaviors correlated more highly with her personality than child-reported behaviors. Behaviors reported by girls provided higher correlations between mother's personality and childrearing dimensions than reports by boys. Mother's personality traits showed differential correlations with childrearing dimensions of Rejection-Restriction (R R) and Warmth-Acceptance (W A) by reporter and sex of child. R R was affected by mother's Impulsiveness more among girls than among boys. Maternal Superiority increased W A toward boys while maternal Responsibility increased W A toward girls.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to describe mother's child-rearing attitudes and problem conduct of children as perceived by children and to examine correlation between maternal nurturing attitudes and child problem behavior. Method: The participants were 338 fifth and sixth graders who attended two randomly selected elementary schools in the city of G, Gangwon province. Child-rearing attitudes of the mother were rated on a 5-pointed scale that developed by Schaefer and added by Oh & Lee(1982). Problem conduct of children were rated on a 3-pointed scale of the K-YSR by Oh Kyung-Ja et al.(1997). The data were gathered from October 2 to October 28, 2004, and the collected data were analyzed with SPSS 10.0 program. Results: For the children's perception of mother's child-rearing attitude, student had a relatively high mean scores of 3.70±0.44. Correlations between the mother's child-rearing attitude and general characteristics of the children showed statistically significantly different according to grade, father-mother relations, type of residence and extent to which father shared household chores. The mean score for problem conducts of children was 0.47±0.25. The average for their internal behavior problems was 0.52±0.33, and for external behavior problems was 0.44±0.24. There were statistically significantly differences in the behavior problem scores of the children according to the general characteristics of grade, education, occupation, mother-father relations, extent to which father shared in household chores and religion. As to correlation between mother's child-rearing attitude and their problem conduct, every type of attitude had a significantly moderate reverse correlation to every type of behavior problem of the children(r=-.431, p=.000). Conclusion: Mother's child-rearing attitudes might affect the problem conduct of children, and mother should try to treat their children with affection and respect, to maintain good relations with father, and to bring their children up coherently in an autonomous, permissive, positive and democratic manner.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate children's perceptions of their own peer status and the variables that affect the perception. Four hundred boys and girls in grades five and six participated in this study. The participants were sampled from elementary schools located in two cities in Cheon-buk Province. Out of the 400 self-report questionnaires filled by the participants, 380 were used for the data analyses. The methods of analyses included basic descriptive categorical analysis (frequencies, means, percentages) as well as t-test, one way ANOVA, and multiple regressions. To summarize major findings from the analyses; first, a significant difference was found in children's aggression by father's job and mother's age, in children's popularity by school GPA, father's education, mother's education, and fathers job, and in children's isolation by father's age, father's education, mother's education, and father's job. Second, children's aggression was significantly dependent upon self-esteem, loneliness, family harmony, and family communication. Children's popularity was related with school grade, name satisfaction, body satisfaction, self-esteem, number of close friends, loneliness, family harmony family communication, parental love and acceptance, and perceived closeness to mother. Children's isolation was significantly associated with school grade, body satisfaction, self-esteem, number of close friends, loneliness, family harmony, family communication, parental love and acceptance, and perceived closeness to mother Third, according to the multiple regression analyses, it was found that highly aggressive children tend to report less family harmony, more loneliness, and a larger number of friends. Also, highly popular children tend to report less loneliness, larger number of friends, strong family harmony, and higher academic achievement. On the other hand, highly isolated children tend to perceive weak family harmony, more loneliness, and lower body satisfaction. Lastly, the overall peer status indicator depended significantly on family harmony, loneliness, self-esteem, academic achievement, body satisfaction.
