The participants were 275 mothers of preschool-age children in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do area. The results were as follows. Maternal perception of child development, achievement pressure and parenting stress were significantly different according to gender, birth order of the child and the employment status of the mother. Maternal perception of child development, achievement pressure and parenting stress were related to each variable. The results of the regression analysis indicated that the maternal perception of child development and achievement pressure were significant variables in predicting the parenting stress of mothers.

  • This study examines child emotional intelligence in relation to mother's emotional expressiveness and reaction to child negative emotions. A sample of 352 children and mothers from 4 elementary schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi participated in the study. Child emotional intelligence and mother's reaction to child negative emotions were evaluated by child-report, and mother's emotional expressiveness was assessed by mother-report. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, two-way analysis of variances, Pearson's correlation and multiple regression analyses. The findings were as follows. First, mothers of boys showed more oversensitive-reaction to child negative emotions than mothers of girls. Mothers of 6th-graders showed more emotion-minimizin-greaction to child negative emotions than mothers of 5th-graders. Second, girls showed a higher level of overall emotional intelligence than boys. Girls showed a higher level of emotion expression and emotion regulation than boys. The 5th-graders showed higher level of emotion expression than 6th-graders; however, 6th graders showed a higher level of emotion perception than 5th-graders. Third, more emotion-coaching-reaction and less oversensitive-reaction by mothers predicted a better emotional intelligence of children. A mother's appropriate emotional socialization behaviors associated with child emotional intelligence were discussed.

  • This study sought to determine wether the reliability of the KIP-C is affected by mothers' scores on of MMPI. Particiapants in this study were 100 mothers whose children visited the a children's psychiatric hospital. They were sorted into two groups; diagnosis consistent group and diagnosis inconsistent groups. the diagnosis inconsistent group showed significantly higher scores on L(p<.001) and K(p<.001) scales, while the diagnosis consistent group had higher scores on F, Ma and Si scales. When comparing the KPI-C of the groups, the diagnosis consistent groups showed significantly higher scores in ANX, SOM and HPR scales(p<.05). A correlation analysis of the validity scales of MMPI and the scales of KPI-C also showed significant correlation. It was also shown that the characteristics of the mothers' personality have important effects on their perception of their children's problems. In particular, the stronger the mothers defensive characteristics, the lower the reliability of their perception of their children's problems. Reciprocally, reliability was higher when the mothers acknowledged their problems.

  • This study analyzed the relationship between mother-child communication and the self-concept of young children. The subjects were 93 three-, four-, and five-year-old kindergarten children and their mothers in the city of Chunju. The self-concept test, mother-child communication inventory for children and the mother-child communication questionnaire for mothers were used. The data were analyzed by T-test, General Linear Models analysis, Duncan's Multiple Range test, Paired T-test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. The major findings were that (1) the children perceived mother-child communication more intensively than mothers, (2) the more positive communication the children perceived they had with their mothers, the higher their self-concept, (3) the self-concept of 5-year-olds was more highly correlated with perception about mother-child communication than the self-concept of the younger children, and (4) boys' self-concept was more highly correlated with perceived mother-child communication than girls'.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mother's perception on the concrete pattern of such behavior problems as noncompliance, jealousy, dependency, hyperactivity and stealing, by analyzing the difference between two cases of her own child and another mother's child relating to her attribution to the behavior problem of the child and the relationship between her attribution and behavioral reaction. This study was carried out by using 515 questionnaires answered by 1000 mothers of children of 7 kindergartens in Ulsan and Taegu, using Melissa Sweitzer's method (1986). The data was subjected to t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient. T-test was applied to test the difference between two cases of her own child and another mother's child relating to her attribution to the behavior problem of the child and Person's correlation coefficient was estimated to test the relationship between her attribution and behavioral reaction. The result of this study is sumarized as follows : 1. It was shown that the mother's attribution to the behavior problem of the child is less serious when her child showed the behavior problem than when another child dose the problem while her attribution has an affective reaction to the behavior problem of the child. 2. The relationship between the mother's attribution and behavior reaction to the behavior problem of the child appeared variously in accordance with the attribution factor and behavior problem. Then the mother showed more attribution to stability while frequently ignoring the child.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships among the beliefs of parents and children, children's cognitive and emotional behavior based on cognitive and interreactionary approach models. The Subjects were 138 children (68 eight-year-olds and 70 eleven-year-olds) and their parents. Instruments used in this study were the modified Family Belief Interview Schedule(Alessandri & Wozniak, 1987), the Standard Achievement Test, and Harter's Perceived Competence Scale. Data analysis was by Pearson's r product moment correlation, two-way ANOVA, Fisher-Z test and Student-Newman-Keuls post-hoc test. The major findings are as follows: (1) The beliefs of parents and children has a significant influence children's perception of competence. (2) The congruence of parents' and children's beliefs was hightest in "assumed similarity". (3) Mother's positive view of their children and congruence of mother's and father's beliefs were correlated with children's academic achievement. Parents' positive beliefs and congruence of beliefs were also correlated with children's self-perception of competence.

  • This research is to compare the infant's temperament and parenting stress perceived by premature infants' mother and full-term infants' mother. It aims at establishing the healthy relationship between mothers and infants. It investigates the basic data of nursing intervention program to help the mother of premature infant. The period of data collection was from May 1, 2005 to May 30, 2005, and the subjects were total 123 mothers: 44 mothers of premature infants and 79 mothers of full-term infants under 6 months who visited general hospitals, individual pediatrics, and health center located in G city. "What My Baby Is Like(WBL)" developed by Pridham, Chang, and Chiu(1994) and translated by Bang Kyeong Sook(1999) was used as a measuring instrument of infants' temperament, and Parenting Stress Index (PSI) developed by Abidin(1990) and revised and complemented by Kim Dong Hee(1997) was used as a measuring instrument of parenting stress. Collected Data were analyzed through $X^2$-test, t-test, Pearson's correlation with SPSS 12.0 window program. The results are as follows: 1. There was a significant difference in the infant's temperament perceived by premature infants' mothers and full-term infants' mothers (t=-4.08, p=.00). In subcategory, there were significant difference between premature infants' mother and full-term infants' mother in geniality(t=-3.62, p=.00), adaptation(t=-3.43, p=.00) and reaction(t=-2.01, p=.05). 2. There was a significant difference in parenting stress between premature infants' mother and full-term infants' mother(t=6.57, p=.00). The parenting stress of premature infants mothers appeared to be higher than full-term infants' mothers. They showed the higher stress in the mother-child relationship area(t=6.27, p=.00) and child area(t=7.38, p=.00) among 3 areas of parenting stress. 3. There were negative correlation between infants' temperament and parenting stress. As mothers perceived the infant's temperament negatively, the parenting stress. Especially, the negative correlation of infants' temperament and parenting stress of premature infants' mothers(r=-.44) was stronger than that of full-term infants' mothers(r=-37). From the research, as mothers of premature infants receive more stress, their stress can cause the serious problem to the relationship of the mother and the infant. Therefore, the nursing intervention should be carried out in order to change the negative perception of mothers towards their infants into the positive perception reduce the parenting stress.
