This experiment was carried out as one of the basic studies to improve the acid resistance of concrete and it was conducted to investigate some relations among physical properties such as basorption, ratio of water to cement, compressive strength, density and ratio of mix to weight losses of mortar when exposed to 0.1 N solution of hydrochrolic acid. The results obtained from the limited data secured so far in this experiment are summarized as follows: 1. The specimens used in the experiment were made of 5 cubic centimeters of mortar having such various ratios of mix by weight as 1 : 1, 1 : 3, 1 : 5, 1 : 7, 1 : 10. 2. Physical tests included compressive strengths at 7 days, 28 days, 3 months, and 6 month, and 5 hour boiling absorption test. 3. In acid test, every specimen was immersed into 0.1 N solution of hydrochrolic acid. The specimens exposed to the acid solution were weighed to determine the weight losses of the acid-corroded at one week interval for 7 weeks exposure, and the old acid solutions were also changed to fresh one when weighed the weight losses by acid attack at one week interval. 4. The correlative relations were found among physical properties and they are expressed by certain formulas as follows; i) Relation between ratio of mix and absorption Y = 1.036x + 13.53 where Y: absorption(%) X: ratio of mix ii) Relation between ratio of mix and ratio of water-cement Y = 0.204x + 0.214 where Y: ratio of water-cement. X: ratio of mix iii) Relation between ratio of water-cement and absorption Y = 5.01x + 12.53 where Y: absorption(%). X: ratio of water-cement iv) Relation between density and absorption Y = 50.6 - 0.0176X where Y: absorption(%). X: density($kg/m^3$) v) Relation between density and ratio of water cement Y = 7.2183 - 0.0033X where Y: ratio of water-cement . X: density($kg/m^3$) 5. After completing the acid exposure test the specimens were corroded and , the per cent ranges of weight losses varies from a minimum of 20.4 per cent at a 1 : 1 mix to a maximum of 92.0 per cent at a 1:10 mix 6. The correlative relations of physical properties of mortar to weight losses by acid attak were found and they are also expressed by certain formulas as follows: i) Relation between weight losses and ratio of mix Y = 8.59X + 8.63 where Y: weight losses(%), X: ratio of mix ii) Relation between wieght losses and absorption Y = 0.121x + 12.43 where Y: absorption(%). X: weight losses(%) iii) Relation between weight losses and ratio of w/c Y = 0.0226X + 0.07 where Y: ratio of w/c X: weight losses(%) iv) Relation between weight losses and compressive strength LogY = 3.6097 - 0.05058X + 0.00022$X^2$ where Y: compressive strength ($kg/cm^3$) X: weight losses(%) v) Relation between weight losses and density Y = 2153.1 - 6.62X where Y: density($kg/m^3$) X: weigh losses(%) 7. In order to make better acid resistant mortar, it could be concluded that a 1 : 3 mix or richer mixes, adequate mixing water to minnimize the ratio of water-cement considering the workability, 16 per cent or less absorption by 5 hour boiling water, 1,800 kilogram per cubic meter or denser density by absolute weight base and 200 kilogram per square meter or compressive strength at 20 day, etc are required so as to obtain acid-resistant mortar. In addition to the above, it might be recommonded to select the fine aggregate and to use better equipments such as a mechanical vibrator, a mechanical mixer etc. in concrete manufacturing works.

Most of concrete fatigue tests currently used are flexural tension or compression methods to investigate the tensile or compressive properties, respectively. However, the concrete pavement or concrete slab is actually subjected to a combined stress condition such as biaxial or triaxial. The split tension test may result in similar stress condition to biaxial stress condition. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the split tension fatigue test method for application in concrete. These were done by a finite element analysis and experimental series. The results were as follows: The optimum configuration of split tension fatigue test was a cylinder of 15cm in diameter and 7.5cm in thickness, which had a little different thickness compared to the KS standard cylinder of ${\phi}15{\times}30cm$. The concrete stress ratio of compressive against horizontal from FEA was 3.1, while that from theory was 3.0. The stress distributions of mortar and steel were almost similar at different thicknesses. The measured static split tensile strengths of concrete and mortar were quite similar at 30cm and 7.5cm thickness cylinders. The measured stress-strain relationship showed their consistency at all specimens regardless of thickness, and confirmed the results from FEA. As a results, the concrete split tension specimen, cylinder of 15cm in diameter and 7.5cm in thickness, could be used at fatigue test because of its accuracy, simplicity and convenience.
For the recycling of rapid-chilled steel slag, the mechanical strengths and physical properties of EVA-polymer modified mortars with the various replacement ratios of rapid-chilled steel slag were investigated. Twenty five specimens of polymer modified mortars were prepared with the five different amounts of EVA-polymer modifier (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 wt%) and rapid-chilled steel slag (0, 25, 50, 75, 100 wt%). For the investigation of the characteristics of polymer modified mortars, the measurements such as water-cement ratio, unit volume weight, air content for fresh mortar and compressive strength, flexural strength, water absorption, hot water resistance, porosity and SEM investigation for curing specimens were conducted. As a results, with an increase in the replacement ratio of rapid-chilled steel slag, water-cement ratios decreased but unit volume weight increased remarkably. With increasing EVA-polymer modifier and the replacement ratio of rapid-chilled steel slag, percent of water absorption decreased but compressive and flexural strengths increased remarkably. By the hot water resistance test, mechanical strengths decreased but total pore volume and porosity increased remarkably. In the SEM observation, the components of specimen were shown to stick to each other in the form of co-matrix phase before hot water resistance test, but polymer modifier of co-matrix phase was decomposed or deteriorated after hot water resistance test.

The experimental research was conducted to evaluate the adhesive performance of surface finishing material with primer based on silane(primer). For this purpose, concrete specimens with compressive strength of 18, 30, 50 MPa were made and cured in water condition ($20{\pm}2^{\circ}C$) for 28 days. A primer was applied on the age of 28 days and evaluated according to based on the curing age of the surface finishing material. Moreover, the mortar specimen also made and tested as per KS F 4937 for compared with concrete-based test results. Test results indicated that the adhesive strength of specimens with primer exhibit similar than that of specimens without primer. Also, the adhesive performance improved with increasing in curing age and compressive strength. The correlation between compressive and adhesive strength of mortar and concrete specimens showed similar trend. It was noted that there is no significant effects of primer on adhesive performance of surface finishing material, thus use of primer has superior potential for solving durability problem of concrete slab surface.
Even though concrete is the most important material for building structures, its intrinsic gray color degrades urban esthetics. In order to improve this problem, coloring methods of mixing pigment in concrete batch and painting the surface of concrete surface have been tried. However, applications of the coloring methods in construction field are difficult due to high cost and low durability. Recently, acid stain agent is emerging as a new coloring method for concrete. It is able to apply a remarkably thin colored layer on a concrete surface from chemical reaction between acid and alkaline solutions. This study has examined the changes and variations of the surface layer of mortar specimen from chemical reaction of acid stained agents. The colors were changed into natural irregular stains according to aging. After the staining, no shape change was found from visible inspections. Microstructure of the colored surface applied with acid stained agent was much rougher than that of original mortar. When the colored layer was compared to original surface, crystals of hydrate such as $Ca(OH)_2$ and C-S-H gel were observed. Surface hardness was same or slightly higher in the colored layer. The value of pH was reduced by approximately 10%, weight contents of elements such as Ca, Si, and Al were low. In the chemical composition of the colored layer, the non-cement based elements of Mn, Cr, and Cu increased. Also, Fe and alkali elements of K and Na increased.

Polymer-modified cement is the composite material made by partially replacing and strengthening the cement hydrate binders of conventional mortar with polymeric modifiers such as polymer latexes and redispersible polymeric modifiers. It is known that the addition of polymer to cement mortar leads to improved quality, which would be expected to have a high chemical resistance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the improved chemical resistance, such as low permeability and low ion diffusivity, of the polymer-modified cement as a solidification agent for the radwaste. First, polymer-modified cement specimens by latex modification were prepared according to the polymer content from 0% to 30% to select the optimized polymer content. At those specimens, the water-to-cement (W/C) ratio was maintained to 33% and 50% respectively. After the much curing time, the structural integrity of specimens was evaluated through the compressive strength test and the porosity evaluation by the water immersion method. From the results, 10% of the polymer content at 33% of the W/C ratio was shown to have the most improved quality. Finally, the leaching test referredfrom ANS 16.1 for the specimens having the most improved quality was conducted. Dedicated specimens for the leaching test were then mixed with radioisotopes of $^{60}Co$ and $^{137}Cs$ at the specimen preparation.

In this study, in order to evaluate the self-healing performance of cement composites the self-healing test method and the analysis method were suggested by applying constant water head permeability test, chloride migration test and repeated bending test. The method of making a cracked specimen and controlling crack width are also proposed. Constant head water permeability test can evaluate the healing performance by using the decreasing rate of water flow passing through the crack zone of a specimen. Furthermore, the equivalent crack width can be used to intuitively investigate the healing effect with healing period. The chloride migration test can evaluate the healing rate by the decreasing rate of the diffusion coefficient obtained by ASTM C 1202. Mechanical healing performance can be evaluated using ISR and IDR estimated from load vs. CMOD relationship graph obtained through the repeated bending test. Finally, the applicability of proposed self-healing evaluation methods was examined by testing mortar specimens with or without self-healing agents.

The Purpose of this study was to establish the basic data on the mechanical properties of PCM in the high temperature range. To this end, an experiment was conducted on the characteristics of the residual compressive strength by temperature (100, 200, 400 and $600^{\circ}C$) with a fixed temperature heating. An after heating test was performed to investigate the properties after fire damage. The result showed that the residual compressive strength of PCM had a tendency to decrease, regardless of the type of polymer. It was also found that when the contents were low, the residual compressive strength started to greatly decrease from the high temperature range of $400^{\circ}C$, and that the specimen containing PAE showed a steeper slope than the specimen containing EVA. However, since little studies have been conducted on the mechanical properties of PCM with the high temperature, it is considered that, in addition to this study, basic studies must be preceded, including studies on the repairing methods.
In this study, a source locating technique applicable to transversely isotropic media was developed. Wave velocity anisotropy was considered based on the partition approximation method, which simply enabled AE source locating. Sets of P wave arrival time were decided by the two-step AIC algorithm and they were later used to locate the AE sources when having the least error compared with the partitioned elements. In order to validate the technique, pencil lead break test on artificial transversely isotropic mortar specimen was carried out. Defining the absolute error as the distance between the pencil lead break point and the located point, 1.60 mm ~ 14.46 mm of range and 8.57 mm of average were estimated therefore it was regarded as thought to be 'acceptable' considering the size of the specimen and the AE sensors. Comparing each absolute error under different threshold levels, results showed small discrepancies therefore this technique was hardly affected by background noise. Absolute error could be decomposed into each coordinate axis error and through it, effect of AE sensor position could be understood so if optimum sensor position was able to be decided, one could get more precise outcome.
Effective porosity has been measured for cement specimen as a function of vacuum time and pressure in the vacuum saturation process. Six cement specimen are used; three of them are made of the same ratio of cement and sand, the other three are 100% cement mortar, of which average porosity is about 25% and 40%, respectively. Using the 6 samples, measured effective porosities are compared and examined with 5 different vacuum pressures (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 torr) and times (20, 40, 60, 80, 100 minute), respectively. Comparing measured effective porosity from experiments when vacuum time varies from 100 minute to 20 minute with 20 minute step and vacuum pressure is fixed to 10, 6, and 2 torr, average deviation decreases as 0.6, 0.5, and 0.2% respectively. Comparing measured effective porosity from experiments when vacuum pressure varies from 2 torr to 10 torr with 2 torr step and vacuum time is fixed to 100, 60, and 20 minute, average deviation increases as vacuum time decreases. These results can be a background of suggested method of ISRM that describes the vacuum time longer than 60 minute and vacuum pressure higher than 6 torr. In this study, only qualitative discussion can be possible for the effects on the effective porosity by decreasing 20 minute vacuuming time at the same pressure or by decreasing 2 torr of vacuum pressure at the same vacuum time. This is because the sample could not reached to perfectly dried condition even though the sample were dried at $105^{\circ}C$ and following the ISRM suggested method, so that initial water content could not be the same at each experiment.
