  • The performances of lifting surfaces are particularly critical in specific flight conditions like takeoff and landing. Different systems can be used to increase the lift and drag coefficients in such conditions like slat, flap or ailerons. Nevertheless they increase the losses and make difficult the mechanical design of wing structures. Morphing surfaces are a compromise between a right increase in lift and a reduction of parts movements involved in the actuation. Furthermore these systems are suitable for more than one flight condition with low inertia problems. So, flap and slats can be easily substituted by the corresponding morphing shapes. This paper deals with a genetic optimization of an airfoil with morphing flap with an already optimized nose. Indeed, two different codes are used to solve the equations, a finite volume code suitable for structured grids named ZEN and the EulerBoundary Layer Drela's code MSES. First a number of different preliminary design tests were done considering a specific set of design variables in order to restrict the design region. Then a RANS optimization with a single design point related to the take-off flight condition has been carried out in order to refine the previous design. Results are shown using the characteristic curves of the best and of the baseline reported to outline the computed performances enhancements. They reveal how the contemporary use of a morphing acting on the nose of the main component and the trailing edge of the flap drive towards a total not negligible increment in lift.

  • Morphing wing which has a configuration optimized to flight speed and condition is faced to a lot of barriers to be overcome such as actuator technique, structural mechanization technique, flexible skin material, control law, and so on. As the first step for developing a morphing wing with rapid response, we designed and fabricated the morphing airfoil using a SMA(shape memory alloy) wire actuator and torsional bias springs. The design concept of the morphing airfoil was verified through operation test. The measured results show that the flap deflects smoothly and fast.

  • This paper is related to hair-blending for 2D virtual color hairstyler based on the semi-automatic field morphing. The proposed 2D virtual color hair-styler is characterized as generating virtual hairstyles using the variable morphing mask instead of the fixed one for the semi-automatic morphing, and then hair-blending the generated virtual hairstyles using sigmoid function around the boundary region of the variable morphing mask. The proposed method is able to generate the virtual hairstyles with an easy-to-use interface based on semi-automatic field morphing. According to the proposed method, a user can shorten the working time and even an unskilled user can obtain natural hairstyles as he or she designates a small number of external user inputs.

  • Digital morph expresses the imaginary beyond the representation of reality by expressing the narrative effect characteristically. In particular, the effect of affect can be considered to be a characteristic of digital cinema as a post-cinema. In (2013), Morphing image prominently shows the characteristics of post-cinema. By actively utilizing software technology, this film gives a shocking effect by expressing the magical image. Paying attention to the post-cinematic characteristics of morphing different from classical film, this article treated the characteristics of digital morphing. The digital morphing presents the flow of affect visualizing uncanny phenomenon of body transformation. This evokes concept of neuro-image which Patricia Pisters distinguished the neuropsychiatric pathology that appears actively on the contemporary digital screen. The Neuro-image goes beyond the temporality of Deleuze's time-image presenting future. Allegedly, the morphing of presents the neuro-images when Nina's body changed to hybrid body with black swan. Digital Morphing technique provides a shocking effect, showing delirium when the body bizarrely deformed while dancing ballet. This is different from the attraction of the morphing in film, it expresses the emotion of the neoliberal era beyond representation. In conclusion, the digital morphing presents the neuro-image system modulating the shock. This shows the characteristics of digital film which interacting and controling the shock effect as post-cinema.

  • The present paper is the preliminary study of the development of a morphing aircraft wing and investigates experimently the aerodynamic characteristics of a base airfoil and a morphing airfoil. The wind tunnel tests are conducted for a base Clark-Y airfoil, an airfoil with a mechanical flap, and a morphing airfoil. Lifts, drags, and pitching moments are measured by using a three-axis load cell and they are calibrated by considering solid blockage and wake blockage. The wind tunnel tests are conducted for various air speeds, Reynolds' numbers, and angles of attack. The experimental results show that the aerodynamic characteristics of the morphing airfoil in lift-drag and lift-pitching moment are better than those of the airfoil with a mechanical flap.

  • In this study, a graphics-processing-unit (GPU)-based acceleration technique is proposed for the feature-based image morphing. This technique uses the depth-buffer of the graphics hardware to calculate efficiently the shortest distance between a pixel and the control lines. The pairs of control lines between the source image and the destination image are determined by user's input, and the distance function of each control line is rendered using two rectangles and two cones. The distance between each pixel and its nearest control line is stored in the depth buffer through the graphics pipeline, and this is used to conduct the morphing operation efficiently. The pixel-unit morphing operation is parallelized using the compute unified device architecture (CUDA) to reduce the morphing time. We demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed technique using several experimental results.

  • With rapid expansion in e-retailing of apparel business, personalized fitting model service shows the possibility as the differentiated marketing strategy in cyber shopping. According as necessity of personalized fitting model construction rises, it is tried personalized fitting model creation in several fields such as computer engineering, mechanical engineering, information engineering. But, because existent study was concentrated only on human body modeling, it does not reflect average morphological characteristics of human body properly. In this study, we wish to examine if morphing is fit for expressing characteristic of average human body shape and suggest desirable morphing. We used 3-D scan data of 254 Korean middle aged men collected by Size Korea 2004. The result of this study are as follows: Lower body types were categorized by height hip girth and lower drop(hip girth-navel girth) which were main factors of lower body shape. Then each factor was divided into 3 groups respectively, 30% in the middle, over 30%, under 30%. In 27 groups, the group which belonged to 30% in the middle of height, 30% in the middle of hip girth, 30% in the middle of lower drop was selected as a representative group. We tested geometrical figure by differ volume, tilt, position of point. And we created a representative type of men's lower bodies by morphing the representative group and analyzed it's horizontal, vertical sections. A representative type which was created by morphing reflected a real body and changed realistically at the part of hip, crotch, calf muscle and so on. A cross sections of a representative type were similar to average cross sections of the representative group in size and shape. So it was proved that morphing was successful.

  • The paper presents the development of numerical models referred to a morphing actuated aileron. The structural solution adopted consists of an internal part made of a composite chiral honeycomb that bears a flexible skin with an adequate combination of flexural stiffness and in-plane compliance. The identification of such structural frame makes possible an investigation of different actuation concepts based on diffused and discrete actuators installed in the skin or in the skin-core connection. An efficient approach is presented for the development of aeroelastic condensed models of the aileron, which are used in sensitivity studies and optimization processes. The aerodynamic performances and the energy required to actuate the morphing surface are evaluated and the definition of a general energetic performance index makes also possible a comparison with a rigid aileron. The results show that the morphing system can exploit the fluid-structure interaction in order to reduce the actuation energy and to attain considerable variations in the lift coefficient of the airfoil.

  • The morphology of a bone is closely associated with its biomechanical response. Thus, much research has been focused on analyzing the effects of variation of bone morphology with subject-specific models. Subject-specific models, which are generally achieved from 3D imaging devices like CT and MRI, incorporate more of the detailed information that makes a model unique. Hence, it may predict individual responses more accurately. Despite these powerful characteristics, specific models are not easily parameterized to the extent possible with statistical models because of their morphologic complexities. Thus, it is still proven challenging to analyze morphologic variations of subject-specific models across changes due to aging or disease. The aim of this article is to propose a generic and robust parametric morphing method for a subject-specific bone structure. We demonstrate this by using the proposed method on a model of a human proximal femur. Automatic segmentation algorithms are also presented to parameterize the specific model efficiently. A total of 48 femur models were evaluated for defining morphing vector fields. Also, several anatomical and mechanical functions of femur were considered as morphing constraints, and the NURBS interpolating technique was applied in the method to guarantee the generality of our morphed results.

  • This paper presents a method for analyzing Hangul glyphs with their outline fonts and obtaining intermediate fonts with two different fonts. The glyphs are represented and analyzed hierarchically such as characters, components(letters) and strokes. With the analysis results, we obtain several intermediate glyphs by morphing two different glyphs of same character. For a natural glyph contour morphing, we employ the curve morphing algorithm by weighted mean of strings. In addition, we provide four operations for transformation of glyphs with different topology. As a result, it is illustrated that the proposed Hangul glyphs morphing scheme is useful for new font generation from any exist fonts or handwritings.
