  • This study aims at obtaining the basic data for the development of pen shell culture at Yoja Bay, the southwest coast of Korea. The authors dealt with the annual gonadal changes of the pen shell, Atrina pectinata japonica, to find out the gametogenesis, reproductive cycle and spawning season, and to investigate the fluctuation in the larval occurence in Yoja Bay. From July 1983 to June 1984, an average of 20 individuals as specimens were monthly collected by commercial fishing dredge near Manwol island located at the mouth of Yoja Bay. The degree of gonadal development was determined by the histological observations as resting spent stage, early developmental stage, after developmental stage, early spawning stage, after spawning stage and degenerative stage. According to these degrees of gonadal development, annual reproductive cycle of the pen shell population was determined. From July to August, the gonads were changed through degenerative into resting stage and, in September and October, they became entirely empty gonads. From November they showed the first sign of gametogenesis developing very slowly. Nevertheless, the developing gametes did not increase in number probably owing to a phagocytic phenomenon by phagocytes which appeared in the gonad during this stage. Some individuals started spawning in April and in May majarity of individuals were in spawning stage. In June, majority of the individuals showed signs of degenerative stage. Therefore, the authors came to a conclusion that the pen shells in Yoja Bay spawn chiefly in May. And this is also supported by the result of the survey on the planktonic occurrences of the pen shell larvae. Namely, there were no larvae at all in April, only a few in May and many in June by vertical water sampling.

  • Relationship between population group properties and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content of the Pacific oyster had been carried out at the Bukman oyster farm near Tongyeong based on the regular monthly sampling from November 1994 through April 1996. DHA content in lipids was least abundant in June and most abundant in November. Minimum DHA content close to 'zero' in lune suggests that much of DHA are being used for maturing and discharging of eggs and sperms, in consideration of the fact that lure is the spawning periods of the oyster. The corelationships among DHA content, mortality, and growth coefficient, have not been recognized. The approximate positive relations have been acknowledged between DHA content and the individual density in times of harvest, and also the individual weight. But it seems that the relaltions between DHA content and the individual weight are not directly related, rather it seems that it is the result from the population density effects caused by the relations between DHA and the number of individuls. But the meaning of the above mentioned relations can not be clearly defined yet.

  • More accurate forecasting of port cargo in the global long-term recession is critical for the implementation of port policy. In this study, the Busan Port container volume (export cargo and transshipment cargo) was estimated using the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model and the vector error correction (VEC) model considering the causal relationship between the economic scale (GDP) of Korea, China, and the U.S. as well as ARIMA, a single volume model. The measurement data was the monthly volume of container shipments at the Busan port J anuary 2014-August 2019. According to the analysis, the time series of import and export volume was estimated by VAR because it was relatively stable, and transshipment cargo was non-stationary, but it has cointegration relationship (long-term equilibrium) with economic scale, interest rate, and economic fluctuation, so estimated by the VEC model. The estimation results show that ARIMA is superior in the stationary time-series data (local cargo) and transshipment cargo with a trend are more predictable in estimating by the multivariate model, the VEC model. Import-export cargo, in particular, is closely related to the size of our country's economy, and transshipment cargo is closely related to the size of the Chinese and American economies. It also suggests a strategy to increase transshipment cargo as the size of China's economy appears to be closer than that of the U.S.

  • The community structure of meiofauna was surveyed from six stations in sand mining area near around Sungapdo, Taean five times from April-December, 2007. Ten meiofaunal taxa in total, comprising 5-9 taxa per station were recovered. Nematodes were dominant from four stations in April and from five stations in May. In June, copepods were dominant from all stations except station two, from which sarcomastigophorans were predominant. Copepods were also dominant from three stations in October and four stations in December. The mean density of meiofauna per $10\;cm^{-2}$ was the highest in October (130 individuals) and lowest (68 individuals) in April. Meiofauna mean biomass per $100\;cm^{-2}$ was $3.80-75.26{\mu}gC$ from each station, with the monthly mean biomass being lowest in April ($11.97{\mu}gC$) and highest in October ($39.50{\mu}gC$). The highest biomass was recorded at station five in October ($75.26{\mu}gC$). Eleven families of harpacticoid copepods occurred Ameiridae and Ectinosomatidae were the most frequent. The mean diversity index was 1.21 from all the stations, 1.22 from the sand mining stations, and 1.19 from the reference stations. The nematode:copepod (N/C) ratio was 1.57 from the sand mining stations and 1.37 from the reference stations. Non-metric multidimensional scaling analysis divided the community into group A (station one, non-sand mining and reference area) and groups B and C in the sand mining area. The present study reports similar numbers of taxa but lower density and biomass of meiofauna compared to previous studies in Korean waters. The variability of the diversity index and N/C ratio may indicate large fluctuation of meiofauna depending on temporal and spatial conditions of the environment in the study area.

  • Monthly variations of physico-chemical and biological parameter were determined in near the Kum River mouth at lower discharge period from January 1998 to September 1999. The characteristics of water quality was showed hypertrophic with average values of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chlorophyll-a and transparency are 3.9 mg N/l, $160\;{\mu}g/l$, $73\;{\mu}g/l$ and 0.8 m, respectively. Among a nitrogen component, inorganic and organic nitrogen comprised 34% and 66% of TN, $NH_4$ and $NO_3$ comprised 30% and 70% of inorganic nitrogen respectively. SRP concentration comprised below 9% of TP. TN/TP and DIN/SRP ratio in winter were higher than in summer. SRSi fluctuation was very wide as ranged from 0 to 3.0 mg Si/l and the highest after flood event in summer. Long-term depleted pattern of Si was observed, that is considered to be important nutrient for algal growth. Chlorophyll-a concentration was very high as $113\;{\mu}g/l$, $162\;{\mu}g/l$ in winter and summer respectively, which persisent bloomed diatom Stephanodiscus and blue-green algae Microcystis. In consequence, water quality management of these periods are considered very important.

  • This report is a part of the studies of the lower part of the Naktong River. The temperature and quality of the river water were investigated from May 1967 to June 1968. Except for Hadan which is a point located at the mouth of the river and much Influenced by sea water the average water temperature is generally below $10^{\circ}C$ up to the end of March, 10 to $20^{\circ}C$ from the beginning of April to the 1st-2nd ten days of May, and thereafter becomes above $20^{\circ}C$ which is adequate for the growth of warm-water fishes. The water again becomes below $20^{\circ}C$ at the beginning of October and becomes below $10^{\circ}C$ in December The difference of water temperature between at 7.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. is considerably great at Hadan, the mouth of the river, where the water is relatively stagnant. It shows an average monthly difference of 2.6 to $6.8^{\circ}C$ with a total average difference of $4.6^{\circ}C$. At the Kupo and Samrangjin stations the difference is very small For the basic data In the management of rivers, the water temperature should be measured twice a day at its highest and lowest temperatures, and the long term fluctuation of temperature should be investigated.

  • Seasonal changes in biochemical composition of muscle, gonad-viceral, mass and whole body of the cultured ark shell, Scapharca broughtonii in the Gamag bay of Yeosu city were studied from December 2008 to November 2009 in relation to environmental condition and reproductive cycles. Average monthly water temperature in the winter was in the range of $7-12^{\circ}C$ and $20-25^{\circ}C$ in the summer, while the salinity fluctuated in the range of 30.1%-33.8‰ on the average. Seasonal fluctuation of the concentration of nutrient salt was the highest in September ($13.04{\mu}g/L$) with average annual concentration of $4.6{\mu}g/L$. The main spawning season of the ark shell was during the months of July and August, and the gonads were in inactive stage during the winter. The gonad-visceral mass contained lower amounts of proteins than the other body parts. The most marked changes in body composition were lipids and carbohydrates within the gonad-visceral mass, and protein for each of the organs was relatively consistent throughout the year. All the parts in the visceral sac displayed the highest changes during the gametogenic cycle while the contents of moisture and lipid within the visceral act displayed somewhat inverse relations with each other. Moisture content was the lowest during the inactive stage during which the lipid content is the highest. The lipid content was the lowest immediately following spawning with increase in the moisture content as the lipid is being consumed. Protein mass within the visceral sac was low in comparison to the muscle mass. It is deemed that carbohydrates, lipids and proteins in the visceral sac play the major role as the source of energy during the development process of the gonads, and used for maintenance of base metabolism when available food is scarce.

  • In order to investigate the changes in the population of Spot-billed ducks due to changes in reclaimed land, we conducted a monthly survey from January 2008 to December 2014 at the Shihwa Lake. The average number of Spot-billed ducks was 12,204 individuals. The average population was decreased. The yearly index of fluctuation (Fi) was the highest at 2.16 in 2010. TRIM(TRends and Indices for Monitoring data) showed a steep decline in winter and a moderate decrease tendency in autumn and spring. However, in the summer season, it showed an moderate increasing tendency. The main habitat were Northland reclaimed land, agricultural land and wetland area, Tando waterway, Shihwa artificial wetland in upstream. The correlation between the number of Spot-billed ducks and the temperature was negatively correlated in spring, summer, autumn. However, winter was showed positive correlation. Therefore, it affects the community of Spot-billed ducks due to environmental changes of reclaimed land. In future, effective management is needed to prepare alternative habitat based on basic data like this study for the conservation and management of Spot-billed ducks during reclamation construction.

  • The purpose of this study is to look for the relationship between export weight and control volume, inland cargo, export cargo transport, ship departure. The analysis period were used for a total of 113 monthly data from January 2011 to May 2020. Data were retrieved from the Korean Statistical Information Service of the Statistics Korea. The data used in this study were performed numerical analysis, index analysis and model analysis using the rate of change from the same month of the previous year. In the trend of the increase rate, the amount of control has plummeted from 150% to 60% due to the influence of Corona 19 in the beginning of 2020. At the same time, export weight and export cargo transport also decreased. As a result of the analysis, export weight showed relatively high synchronization with export cargo transport and control volume. On the other hand, export weight and inland cargo showed relatively low synchronization. Export weight is expected to continue in 2020 after the fluctuation rate began to decrease after 2019. If we can find the point of rebound in control volume or export cargo transport in the future, we can predict the point of increase in export weight. We expect to see an increase in export weight as soon as possible.
