This paper studies soil properties uncertainty and its implementation in the seismic response evaluation of structures. For this, response sensitivity of two 4- and 12-story RC shear walls to the soil properties uncertainty by considering soil structure interaction (SSI) effects is investigated. Beam on Nonlinear Winkler Foundation (BNWF) model is used for shallow foundation modeling and the uncertainty of soil properties is expanded to the foundation stiffness and strength parameters variability. Monte Carlo (MC) simulation technique is employed for probabilistic evaluations. By investigating the probabilistic evaluation results it's observed that as the soil and foundation become stiffer, the soil uncertainty is found to be less important in influencing the response variability. On the other hand, the soil uncertainty becomes more important as the foundation-structure system is expected to experience nonlinear behavior to more sever degree. Since full probabilistic analysis methods like MC commonly are very time consuming, the feasibility of simple approximate methods' application including First Order Second Moment (FOSM) method and ASCE41 proposed approach for the soil uncertainty considerations is investigated. By comparing the results of the approximate methods with the results obtained from MC, it's observed that the results of both FOSM and ASCE41 methods are in good agreement with the results of MC simulation technique and they show acceptable accuracy in predicting the response variability.
This paper describes the evaluation and selection of MEMS(Micro-Elect Mechanical System) based inertial sensor to fit to implement the Inertial Measurement Unit(IMU) for a small-sized vessel at sea. At first, the error model and the noise model of the inertial sensors are defined with Euler's equations and then, the inertial sensor evaluation is carried out with Allan Variance techniques and Monte Carlo simulation. As evaluation results for the five sensors, ADIS16405, SAR10Z, SAR100Grade100, LIS344ALH and ADXL103, the combination of gyroscope and accelerometer of ADIS16405 is shown minimum error having around 160 m/s standard deviation of velocity error and around 35 km standard deviation of position error after 600 seconds. Thus, we select the ADIS16405 inertial sensor as a MEMS-based inertial sensor to implement IMU and, the error reducing method is also considered with the search for reference papers.

In this paper, in order to evaluate the performance of IS-95 system reverse link in white gaussian noise and rayleigh fading environment, we suggest epochal proposal to improve computer run-time and its efficiency is verified in terms of the number of samples. MC(Monte Carlo) simulation is the most popular simulation technique lately, but MC simulation requires a number of samples at low bit error rate. Therefore, MC cannot avoid the limit of computer run-time. To alleviate these problems, we apply the suggested method called central moment technique to the reverse link of the IS-95 system and can obtain discrete probability mass functions from Nth order central moments of the less number of received signal samples than those required in MC. Continuous cumulative probability distribution function can be accurately estimated by using interpolation and the improvement effect for the number of samples is proven.
Structural pounding is commonly observed phenomenon during major ground motion, which can cause both structural and architectural damages. To reduce the amount of damage from pounding, the best and effective way is to increase the separation distance. Generally, existing design procedures for determining the separation distance between adjacent buildings subjected to structural pounding are based on approximations of the buildings' peak relative displacement. These procedures are based on unknown safety levels. The aim of this research is to estimate probabilistic separation distance between adjacent structures by considering the variability in the system and uncertainties in the earthquakes characteristics through comprehensive numerical simulations. A large number of models were generated using a robust Monte-Carlo simulation. In total, 6.54 million time-history analyses were performed over the adopted models using an ensemble of 25 ground motions as seismic input within OpenSees software. The results show that a gap size of 50%, 70% and 100% of the considered design code for the structural periods in the range of 0.1-0.5 s, leads to have the probability of pounding about 41.5%, 18% and 5.8%, respectively. Finally, based on the results, two equations are developed for probabilistic determination of needed structural separation distance.

We propose a new concept for a depth of interaction (DOI) positron emission tomography (PET) detector based on dual-ended-scintillator (DES) readout for small animal imaging. The detector consists of lutetium yttrium orthosilicate (LYSO) arrays coupled with orthogonal wavelength-shifting (WLS) fibre placed on the top and bottom of the arrays. On every other line, crystals that are 2 mm shorter are arranged to create grooves. WLS fibre is inserted into these grooves. This paper describes the design and performance evaluation of this PET detector using Monte Carlo simulations. To investigate sensitivity by crystal size, five types of PET detectors were simulated. Because the proposed detector is composed of crystals with three different lengths, degradation in sensitivity across the field of view was also explored by simulation. In addition, the effect of DOI resolution on image quality was demonstrated. The simulation results proved that the devised PET detector with excellent DOI resolution is helpful for reducing the channels of sensors/electronics and minimizing gamma ray attenuation and scattering while maintaining good detector performance.
Self-powered neutron detector (SPND) is a sensor to monitor a neutron flux proportional to a reactor power of the nuclear power plants. Since an SPND is usually installed in the reactor core and does not require additional outside power, it generates electrons itself from interaction between neutrons and a neutron-sensitive material called an emitter, such as rhodium and vanadium. This paper presents the simulations of the depletion sensitivity evaluations based on MCNP models of rhodium and vanadium SPNDs and light water reactor fuel assembly. The evaluations include the detail geometries of the detectors and fuel assembly, and the modeling of rhodium and vanadium emitter depletion using MCNP and ORIGEN-S codes, and the realistic energy spectrum of beta rays using BETA-S code. The results of the simulations show that the lifetime of an SPND can be prolonged by using vanadium SPND than rhodium SPND. Also, the methods presented here can be used to analyze a life-time of those SPNDs using various emitter materials.

In this paper, probabilistic distribution of fatigue life of chassis component is determined statistically by applying the design of experiments and the Pearson system. To construct $p-\varepsilon-N$ curve, the case that fatigue data are random variables is attempted. Probabilistic density function(p.d.f) for fatigue life is obtained by design of experiment and using this p.d.f fatigue reliability about any aimed fatigue life can be calculated. Lower control arm and rear torsion bar of chassis component are selected as examples for analysis. Component load histories, which are obtained by multi-body dynamic simulation for Belsian load history, are used. Finite element analysis are performed using commercial software MSC Nastran and fatigue analysis are performed using FE Fatigue. When strain-life curve itself is random variable, probability density function of fatigue life has very little difference from log-normal distribution. And the case of fatigue data are random variables, probability density functions are approximated to Beta distribution. Each p.d.f is verified by Monte-Carlo simulation.
Mechanically deformed cartilage undergoes a temperature dependent phase transformation resulting in reshaping of cartilage. Laser-assisted cartilage reshaping (LCR) is recently introduced to recreate the underlying cartilage framework in structures such as ear, larynx, trachea, and nose. However, this procedure has not been fully supported by confirmed efficacy because of the lack of scientific research and its safety issues. The purpose of this study is to evaluate current laser sources to determine optimal laser wavelength for LCR using mathematical simulations and investigate optical, thermo-mechanical, and backscattering properties of cartilage after laser irradiation. The results showed that 1444 nm wavelength was effective for reshaping of cartilage with minimal thermal damage in the surrounded tissues by monte carlo simulations. Analysis of bend angle changes, thermo-mechanical characteristics, and backscattered properties may be useful to better identify the biophysical transformation responsible for stress relaxation in cartilage and develop an optical feedback control methodologies.
Since there are multiple random variables in the probabilistic load flow (PLF) calculation of distribution system containing distributed generation (DG) and electric vehicle charging load (EVCL), a Monte Carlo method based on composite sampling method is put forward according to the existing simple random sampling Monte Carlo simulation method (SRS-MCSM) to perform probabilistic assessment analysis of voltage quality of distribution system containing DG and EVCL. This method considers not only the randomness of wind speed and light intensity as well as the uncertainty of basic load and EVCL, but also other stochastic disturbances, such as the failure rate of the transmission line. According to the different characteristics of random factors, different sampling methods are applied. Simulation results on IEEE9 bus system and IEEE34 bus system demonstrates the validity, accuracy, rapidity and practicability of the proposed method. In contrast to the SRS-MCSM, the proposed method is of higher computational efficiency and better simulation accuracy. The variation of nodal voltages for distribution system before and after connecting DG and EVCL is compared and analyzed, especially the voltage fluctuation of the grid-connected point of DG and EVCL.
An accurate determination of wind speed distribution is the basis for an evaluation of the wind energy potential required to design a wind turbine, so it is important to estimate unknown parameters of wind speed distribution. In this paper, Gumbel distribution is used in modelling wind speed data, and alternative robust estimation methods to estimate its parameters are considered. The methodologies used to obtain the estimators of the parameters are least absolute deviation, weighted least absolute deviation, median/MAD and least median of squares. The performances of the estimators are compared with traditional estimation methods (i.e., maximum likelihood and least squares) according to bias, mean square deviation and total mean square deviation criteria using a Monte-Carlo simulation study for the data with and without outliers. The simulation results show that least median of squares and median/MAD estimators are more efficient than others for data with outliers in many cases. However, median/MAD estimator is not consistent for location parameter of Gumbel distribution in all cases. In real data application, it is firstly demonstrated that Gumbel distribution fits the daily mean wind speed data well and is also better one to model the data than Weibull distribution with respect to the root mean square error and coefficient of determination criteria. Next, the wind data modified by outliers is analysed to show the performance of the proposed estimators by using numerical and graphical methods.
