  • EST has been applied to the East Coast to estimate extreme sea levels. Surge heights induced by 51 typhoons which have occurred last 60 years were calculated by ADCIRC model. The training set which is consist of surge heights by both typhoon and monsoon was constructed. The maximum surge height of the year excluding the one by typhoon is considered to be the surge height by monsoon. High/low tide conditions and spring/neap tide conditions were considered for constructing input vectors of typhoon and monsoon, respectively. The annual tide is also considered in response vectors for each case. The result is in accord with Jeong et al. (2008), which implies validity of the present study.

  • Spatial and temporal distribution of environmental factors and epilithic diatom communities in major rivers (30 rivers and 58 sampling points) of the Korean peninsula were surveyed each one time before (May) and after the monsoon (October) 2012. The stream of the east harbor (EAST), the south harbor (SOUTH), and the west harbor (WEST) was sampled in order. Over the survey, a total of 284 taxa were classified, and the number of diatom species in each harbor did not show significant changes after the monsoon, but a biomass significantly decreased. Results also showed that EAST deterioration of water quality and chlorophyll-a after the monsoon, was opposite to SOUTH. Five major dominant species including Nitzschia inconspicua, which contained higher biomass over the survey, were common species which widely distributed in brackish water. Indicator Species Analysis showed that a large number of clean water species in EAST and polluted water species in SOUTH and WEST were emerged respectively. In sum, the Asian monsoon significantly decreased a biomass of epilithic diatoms and water qualities over the harbors (lower stream) in the Korean peninsula, but did not change the major species indicating water quality.

  • Understanding the variability of the monsoon system requires information about the changes in the past. We revealed the Mid- and Late-Holocene paleo-climate changes and Asian monsoon variations in Korea by the speleothem records from Pyeongchang. To this, we used thicknesses of growth laminae, stable-isotope analysis (carbon, oxygen), and radio-carbon age dating. The speleothem grew between ~4580 yr BP to ~660 yr BP and we identified several weak AM(Asian monsoon) events, such as Middle Bronze Age Cold Epoch, Iron Age Cold Epoch, and Dark Age Cold Period. These events might have occurred relatively early compared to those of other studies.

  • The performance of East Asian summer monsoon is assessed for GC2 and GC3.1, which are climate change models of the current and next climate prediction system in the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), GloSea5 and GloSea6. The most pronounced characteristics of GC models are strong monsoon trough and the weakening of the Western North Pacific Subtropical High (WNPSH). These are related to the weakening of the southwesterly wind and resulting weak monsoon band toward the Korean Peninsula. The GC3.1 is known to have improved the model configuration version compared to GC2, such as cloud physics and ocean parameters. We can confirm that the overall improvements of GC3.1 against GC2, especially in pressure, 850 hPa wind fields, and vertical wind shear. Also, the precipitation band stagnant in the south of 30°N in late spring is improved, therefore the biases of rainy onset and withdrawal on the Korean Peninsula are reduced by 2~4 pentad. We also investigate the impact of initialization in comparison with GloSea5 hindcast. Compared with GCs, hindcast results show better simulation within 1 month lead time, especially in pressure and 850 hPa wind fields, which can be expected to the improvement of WNPSH. Therefore, it is expected that the simulation performance of WNPSH will be improved in the result of applying the initialization of GloSea6.

  • Even though state-of-the-art general circulation models is improved step by step, the seasonal predictability of the East Asian summer monsoon still remains poor. In contrast, the seasonal predictability of western North Pacific and Indian monsoon region using dynamic models is relatively high. This study builds canonical correlation analysis model for seasonal prediction using wind fields over western North Pacific and Indian Ocean from the Global Seasonal Forecasting System version 5 (GloSea5), and then assesses the predictability of so-called hybrid model. In addition, we suggest improvement method for forecast skill by introducing the lagged ensemble technique.

  • Despite the unfamiliar term "multifunctionality of agriculture" and the tremendous number of debates made over the past 10 years, multiple benefits from paddy rice farming in the Asian monsoon region are very significance due to the various inherent characteristics of paddy rice in this lesion. They were identified as rural vitalization, social security, nature and environmental preservations, and social and cultural functions. As studies estimating the monetary value of nature and environmental functions in Korea and Japan revealed, the economic value of multifunctionality from paddy rice farming reached to 70∼150% of total annual rice production cost of each country, and would have been even higher, had other functions been included. Therefore, interdisciplinary and international researches within the monsoon Asian countries are necessary to develop counter-measure logics against the Western dry land farming countries, emphasizing the efforts to disseminate worldwide the significance and recognition of the multifunctionality of paddy rice farming under the Asian monsoon climate.

  • The study was conducted in the Bangladesh Agricultural University campus, Mymensingh, from July 1988 to June 1990. Five grazing fields consisting of five different vegetations were selected for this study. The specimen were collected from this study. The specimen were collected from the grazing fields by dragging method. The results revealed that two species of ticks namely Boophilus microplus and Haemaphysalis bispinosa were collected from five different vegetation. The highest incidence of both B. microplus and H. bispinosa were recorded during winter season and lowest in Monsoon for the year of 1988-89 and 1989-90. These two species were significantly occurred in Winter followed by Monsoon and Autumn.

  • Based on the transient finite difference solution of Richards' equation, an infiltration model is developed to analyze temporal variation of precipitation recharge in the region of monsoon climates. Simulation results obtained by using time series data of 20-year daily precipitation and pan evaporation indicate that a linear relationship between the annual precipitation and the annual recharge holds for the soils under the monsoon climates with varying degrees of the correlation coefficient depending on the soil types. A sensitivity analysis reveals that the water table depth has little effects on the recharge for the sandy soil, whereas, for the loamy and silty soils, rise of the water table at shallow depths causes increase of evaporation by approximately 100㎜/yr and a corresponding decrease in recharge. A series of simulations for two-layered soils illustrate that the amount of recharge is dominantly determined by the soil properties of the upper layer, although the temporal variation of recharge is affected by both layers.

  • The seasonal variability of sonic layer depth (SLD) in the central Arabian Sea (CAS) (0 to $25^{\circ}N$ and $62-66^{\circ}E$) was studied using the temperature and salinity (T/S) profiles from Argo floats for the years 2002-2006. The atmospheric forcing responsible for the observed changes was explored using the meteorological data from NCEP/NCAR and Quickscat winds. SLD was obtained from sound velocity profiles computed from T/S data. Net heat flux and wind forcing regulated SLD in the CAS. Up-welling and down-welling (Ekman dynamics) associated with the Findlater Jet controlled SLD during the summer monsoon. While in winter monsoon, cooling and convective mixing regulated SLD in the study region. Weak winds, high insolation and positive net heat flux lead to the formation of thin, warm and stratified sonic layer during pre and post summer monsoon periods, respectively.

  • This paper demonstrates the influence of intensity of the monsoon on morpho-hydrological fluctuations in Taechung Reservoir during 1993${\sim}$1994. During the study, hydrological variables including rainfall, inflow, and discharge volume showed distinct contrast between 1993 and 1994. Interannaul differences in rainfall occurred during the monsoon in July${\sim}$August monsoon and influenced inflow, discharge, and water residence time (WRT). Total inflow in 1993 was four times greater than that of 1994, and summer inflow in 1993 was 8 times greater than summer 1994. Annual Mean WRT was 93.2 d in 1993 vs. 158.6 d in 1994 and the largest differences occurred between monsoons of 1993 and 1994. Morphometric variables reflected the interannual contrasts of hydrology, so that in 1993 surface area, total volume, shoreline development, and mean depth increased consistently from premonsoon to postmonsoon and over this same period in 1994 they decreased. This outcome indicates that the area of shallow littoral zones in 1993 was greater than in 1994. Also, the drainage area to surface area (D/L) at 80 m MSL was 60.7 which was much greater than values in Soyang and Andong reservoirs and natural lakes world-wide. The morpho-hydrodynamic conditions seemed to influence in-reservoir nutrient concentration which is one of the most important factors regulating the eutrophication processes. I believe, under the maximum hydrodynamic fluctuations in Korean waterbodies during the monsoon, applications of mass balance models to man-made lakes for assessments of external loading should be considered because the models can be used under the seasonally stable inflow and water residence time.
