Many studies have been carried out on the graft finishing in order to improve the quality of silk fiber. Various vinyl monomers, for instance, styrene, methylmethacrylate, 2-hydroxyeth-ylmethacrylate and methacrylamide, have been used practically up to date. Among these monomers, methacrylamide has been applied as the most favourable monomer onto silk fibers in recent years. The polymerization mechanism about styrene- and methylmethacrylate-grafted silk fiber has been studied by many researchers. They proposed that free radicals were formed and vinyl monomers were polymerized in silk fibroin by graft polymerization mechanism, while active sites were varied by the types of monomer and initiator as well as by the reaction condition. In general. there is another Opinion that monomers are polymerized and impregnated in the internal side of the fiber by homopolymerization, which has not been proved experimentally yet More than 10 years have been passed since methacrylamide was applied on the silk fiber, and at the present time most finishings are being achieved by methacrylamide. However, no attention has been paid to the polymerization mechanism of the methacrylamide-treated silk fiber yeL In this paper, the treatments of methacrylamide on silk fibers were studied in aqueous solution using potassium persulfate as an initiator. The polymerization mechanism of the methacrylamide-treated silk fibers was investigated and analyzed on the basis of the results of infrared spectroscopy, amino acid analysis and scanning electron microscopy. From the results of these instrumental analyses, it can be suggested that polymerization mechanism about the methacrylamide-treated silk fibers is not performed by graft polymerization which has been accepted generally in styrene and methylmethacrylate-grafted silk fibers. The different mechanism is supposed to be due to the difference in monomer types, initiator types and treatment conditions.
Current composites are made with dimethacrylate monomers and silane-treated silica microfillers, either alone or with silane treated glass fillers The main reasons for clinical failure of dental composites are secondary caries, wear and fracture. Most of practitioner want to get a composite which is more tougher under occlusal stress, less polymerization contraction, and better handling properties in application clinically. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of resin matrix with various flows on the physical proper-ties such as fracture toughness and degree of conversion of the experimental resins. It was hypothesized that flexible or tough resin composites can be designed by judicious choice of monomer composition Various flow resin matrices containing Bis-GMA, UDMA, and TEG-DMA were made by altering the pro-portion of the monomers. After the unfilled resins were light-cured for different light intensity, the fracture toughness(K$_{1c}$) was measured according to ASTM standard using the single edge notched geometry, and degree of conversion(DC) was measured by FTIR. And experimental composites were formulated with variations in the proportion of silanated quartz and strontium glass fillers as 60, 75, and 77wt%. Also, the physical properties of composites with various filer contents were evaluated as same manner. All resulting data were compared by ANOVA/Tukeys test at 0.05 level. The results were as follows; 1. The degree of conversion of high flow resin containing less Bis-GMA was higher than that of low flow unfilled resin 2. While the degree of conversion of unfilled resin was increased according to light intensity for polymerization, there was no significant increase with moderate and high light intensity. Also, the fracture toughness was not increased by high light intensity. 3. The fracture toughness was high in the low flow unfilled resin containing higher contents of Bis-GMA. 4. There was a significant increase for fracture toughness and a tendency for degree of conversion to be reduced when the content of fillers was increased. 5. In the experimental composites, the flow of resin matrix did not affected on the fracture toughness, even, which was decreased as increase of viscosity. These results showed that the physical properties of a dental composite could be attributed to the flow of resin matrix with relative content of monomers. Specific combination of resin monomers should be designed to fulfil the needs of specific indication for use.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a various light curing time on the residual monomers released from light-cured dental sealant, and to examine the effectiveness of surface treatment in reducing the oxygen-inhibited layer of light-cured dental sealant($Helioseal^{(R)}$ F, Vivadent, Liechtenstein). Specimens were cured with a halogen light curing unit(XL 3000, 3M, USA) for 20, 40, 60s. Surface treatment of a light-cured dental sealant included no treatment(control group), a 10-seconds exposure to distilled water(Group I), 10-seconds manual application using a cotton pellet wetted with 75% alcohol(Group II), and 10-seconds application of a water/pumice slurry using a rubber cup on a slow-speed handpiece The specimens were eluted in distilled water for 10 minutes. All elutes were analyzed by HPLC for identification and quantitive analysis of monomers. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. None of the chromatograms of the tested sealant displayed peaks with the same retention time as that of the standard solution, except for TEGDMA. 2. The release of TEGDMA decreased with increasing curing time in conventional halogen light. 3. All surface treatment group had a decrease of monomer release in comparison with no treatment group. 4. Treatment that Group III eliminated the greatest amount of any type of residual monomers. 5. The elution of unreacted monomers from curing with halogen curing unit for 60s and Group III was less than other groups.
In this study, we modified silica nanoparticles with bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]amine (BTMA) silane coupling agent to introduce secondary amino groups on the silica surface. After modification of silica, we investigated effects of different types of (meth)acrylate group containing monomers on the Michael addition reaction to introduce reactive (meth)acrylate groups on the BTMA modified silica surface. We used two kinds of (meth)acrylate monomers, trimethylolpropane ethoxylate triacrylate (TMPET) which has three identical acrylate groups, and 3-(acryloyloxy)-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (AHM) which has one acrylate and one methacrylate group. We used fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis (EA) and solid state cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) to understand reactions between NH groups on the silica surface with (meth)acrylate groups of TMPET and AHM monomers. We found almost complete Michael addition reaction between all three acrylate groups of TMPET with NH groups on the BTMA modified silica. But, for the AHM treatment of BTMA modified silica, we found Michael addition reaction occurred only between acrylate groups of AHM and NH groups of silica surface, not between methacrylate groups of AHM and NH groups of BTMA modified silica surface.

Furan-containing epoxide monomers (8, 9) were designed and synthesized as carbon-neutral, environment-friendly adhesion material. Bicyclic skeleton were constructed using the Diels-Alder reaction of furan and methyl acrylate, both readily accessible starting material from a biomass via bio-refinery process. After reduction of ester functionality, resulting hydroxyl moieties were coupled to epichlorohydrin to provide the epoxy-functionalized furanic monomers (8, 9). The structure of new furanic monomers was confirmed by $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR spectroscopy. As UV-curable monomers, basic properties such as UV curing time and the extent of UV curing were evaluated by photo DSC. Photo-curing shrinkages were measured by linear variable differential transformer transducer (LVDT) and the effect of molecular structure on shrinkage was considered. In addition, new synthetic compounds showed the shear strength over 3 MPa when they were photo-cured between polycarbonate plates, which indicates these compounds are feasible to use as photo-curable adhesive materials.

Multi-functional urethane acrylate monomers as the curing agent of poly(phenylene ether) (PPE) were synthesized and then the urethane bond formation was checked by FTIR spectrometry and NMR analysis. The synthesized monomers were mixed with PPE and fabricated to dielectric substrates. After forming PPE/monomer composite sheets by a film coater, several sheets were laminated to a test substrate in a vacuum laminator and then its properties depending on the type and the amount of monomers, such as dielectric constant, dielectric loss, and peel strength, were measured. Between the two different hydroxyl acrylates, when the monomer synthesized with 2-hydroxy-3-phenoxypropyl acrylate containing a phenyl group was used as a curing agent, a smaller dielectric loss was obtained and the dielectric constant and loss decreased with a decrease in the amount of the monomer. The peel strength values of the test substrates, however, did not show any specific difference between the cases of two synthesized monomers. As a result, it was obtained the polymer substrate for high frequency application having peel strength of about 10 N, low dielectric constant of 2.54, and low dielectric loss of 0.0027 at 1 GHz.
Silicone hydrogels incorporated with poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG) were prepared and characterized to evaluate the effects of PEG on contact lenses. The silicone hydrogels were copolymerized with methacryloxypropyl tris(trimethylsiloxy) silane (TRIS), methyl methacrylate (MMA), N,N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMA) and PEG-containing monomers such as poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEG- MEM). The silicone hydrogels were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), electron spectroscopy of chemical analysis (ESCA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Water absorbance, water contact angle and light transmittance of the silicone hydrogels were evaluated. The experiments of protein adsorption were also carried out to evaluate the protein adsorption in tears. The peak intensity of C-O bond was increased by the incorporation of PEG-containing monomers and thus PEG incorporation into silicone hydrogels could be confirmed. Phase separation was not shown by the SEM observation of the cross-section of silicone hydrogels. Water absorbancy was increased, while water contact angle and light transmittance were decreased with increasing incorporation of the PEG-containing monomers. The absorption of proteins in tears, albumin, lysozyme and $\gamma$-globulin, on the surface of silicone hydrogels was decreased with increasing incorporation of the PEG-containing monomers.
Kraft lignin is a by-product of the pulp and paper industry, obtained as a black liquor after the extraction of cellulose from wood through the Kraft pulping process. Right now, kraft lignin is utilized as a low-grade boiler fuel to provide heat and power but can be converted into high-calorific biofuels or high-value chemicals once the efficient catalytic depolymerization process is developed. In this work, the multi-functional catalyst of Ru-Mg-Al-oxide, which contains hydrogenation metals, acid, and base sites for the effective depolymerization of kraft lignin are prepared, and its lignin depolymerization efficiency is evaluated. In order to understand the role of different active sites in the lignin depolymerization, the three different catalysts of MgO, Mg-Al-oxide, and Ru-Mg-Al-oxide were synthesized, and their lignin depolymerization activity was compared in terms of the yield and the average molecular weight of bio-oil, as well as the yield of phenolic monomers contained in the bio-oil. Among the catalysts tested, the Ru-Mg-Al-oxide catalyst exhibited the highest yield of bio-oil and phenolic monomers due to the synergy between active sites. Furthermore, in order to maximize the extent of lignin depolymerization over the Ru-Mg-Al-oxide, the effects of reaction conditions (i.e., temperature, time, and catalyst loading amount) on the lignin depolymerization were investigated. Overall, the highest bio-oil yield of 72% and the 3.5 times higher yield of phenolic monomers than that without a catalyst were successfully achieved at 350 ℃ and 10% catalyst loading after 4 h reaction time.
