In this study, monolithic liquid phase sintered SiC (LPS-SiC) was made by the hot pressing method with nano-SiC powder, whose particle size is 30 nm and less on the average. Alumina ($Al_{2}O_{3}$), yttria ($Y_{2}O_{3}$), and silica ($S_{i}O_{2}$) were used for sintering additives. To investigate the effects of $S_{i}O_{2}$, the $Al_{2}O_{3}/Y_{2}O_{3}$ composition was fixed and the ratio of $S_{i}O_{2}$ was changed, with seven different ratios tested. And to investigate the effects of the sintering temperature, the sintering temperature was changed, with $1760^{\circ}C,\;1780_{\circ}C$, and $1800_{\circ}C$ being used with a $S_{i}O_{2}$ ratio of 3 wt%. The materials were sintered for 1 hour at $1760^{\circ}C,\;1780^{\circ}C$ and $1800^{\circ}C$ under a pressure of 20 MPa. The effects on sintering from the sintering system used, as well as from the composition of the sintering additives, were investigated by density measurements. Mechanical properties, such as flexural strength, were investigated to ensure the optimum conditions for a matrix of SiCf/SiC composites. Sintered densityand the flexural strength of fabricated LPS-SiC increased with an increase in sintering temperature. Particularly, the relative density of a sintered body at $1800^{\circ}C$ with a non-content of $S_{i}O_{2}$, a specimen of AYSO-1800, was 95%. Also, flexural strength was about 750MPa.
In this study, we describe the conventional hot pressing (CHP) of layered $Al-B_4C$ composites and their characterization. The matrix alloy Al-5 wt.%Cu was prepared from elemental powder mixtures. The metal and B4C powders were mixed to produce either $Al-Cu-10vol.%B_4C$ or $Al-Cu-30vol.%B_4C$ combinations. Then, these powder mixtures were stacked as layers in the hot pressing die to form a two-layered composite. Hot pressing was carried out under nitrogen atmosphere to produce $30\times40\times5mm$ specimens. Microstructural features and age hardening characteristics of composites were determined by specimens cut longitudinally. The flexural strength of both layered composites and their monolithic counterparts were investigated via three point bending tests. In the case of layered specimens of both $10vol.%B_4C$ and $30vol.%B_4C$ containing layers were loaded for three-point test. The results show that a homogeneous distribution of $B_4C$ particles in the matrix alloy which is free of pores, can be obtained by CHP method. The ageing behavior of the composites was found to be influenced by the reinforced materials, i.e. higher hardness values were reached in 8 hrs for the composites than that for the matrix alloy. Flexural strength test showed that two-layered composites exhibited improved damage tolerance depending on layer arrangement. Microstructural investigation of the fracture surfaces of the bending specimens was performed by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM). While layer with lower reinforcement content exhibited large plastic deformation under loading, the other with higher reinforcement content exhibited less plastic deformation.
The friction behaviors of bulk amorphous thermal spray coating (BAC) and second phase-reinforced composite coatings using a high velocity oxy-fuel spraying process were investigated using a ball-on-disk test rig that slides against a ceramic ball in an atmospheric environment. The surface temperatures were measured using an infrared thermometer installed 50 mm from the contact surface. The crystallinities of the coating layers were determined using X-ray diffraction. The morphologies of the coating layers and worn surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The results show that the friction behavior of the monolithic amorphous coating was sensitive to the testing conditions. Under lower than normal loads, a low and stable friction coefficient of about 0.1 was observed, whereas under a higher relative load, a high and unstable friction coefficient of greater than 0.3 was obtained with an instant temperature increase. For the composite coatings, a sudden increase in friction coefficient did not occur, i.e., the transition region did not exist and during the friction test, a gradual increase occurred only after a significant delay. The BAC morphology observations indicate that viscous plastic flow was generated with low loads, but severe surface damage (i.e., tearing) occurred at high loads. For composite coatings, a relatively smooth surface was observed on the worn surface for all applied loads.
PURPOSE. Translucency and colour stability are two most important aspects for an aesthetic dental restoration. Glass ceramic restorations are popular amongst clinicians because of their superior aesthetic properties. In the last decade, zirconia has generated tremendous interest due to its favorable mechanical and biological properties. However, zirconia lacks the translucency that lithium disilicate materials possess and therefore has limitations in its use, especially in esthetically demanding situations. There has been a great thrust in research towards developing translucent zirconia materials for dental restorations. The objective of the study was to evaluate and compare the transmittance of a translucent variant of zirconia to lithium disilicate. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two commercially available zirconia materials (conventional and high translucency) and 2 lithium disilicate materials (conventional and high translucency) with standardized dimensions were fabricated. Transmittance values were measured for all samples followed by a microstructural analysis using a finite element scanning electron microscope. One way analysis of variance combined with a Tukey-post hoc test was used to analyze the data obtained (P=.05). RESULTS. High translucency lithium disilicate showed highest transmittance of all materials studied, followed by conventional lithium disilicate, high translucency zirconia and conventional zirconia. The difference between all groups of materials was statistically significant. The transmittance of the different materials correlated to their microstructure analysis. CONCLUSION. Despite manufacturers' efforts to make zirconia significantly more translucent, the transmittance values of these materials still do not match conventional lithium disilicate. More research is required on zirconia towards making the material more translucent for its potential use as esthetic monolithic restoration.

Several boride sintered bodies such as $TiB_2$, $ZrB_2$, and $SiB_6$ were previously reported. In the present study, the sinterability and physical properties of chromium boride $(CrB_2)$ containing chromium carbide $(Cr_3C_2)$ sintered bodies were investigated in order to determine its new advanced material. The samples were sintered at desired temperature for 1 hour in vacuum under a pressure by hot pressing. The relative density of sintered bodies was measured by Archimedes' method. The relative densities of $CrB_2$ addition of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mass% $Cr_3C_2$ composites were 92 to 95%. The Vickers hardness of the $CrB_2$ with 10 and 15 mass% $Cr_3C_2$ composites were about 14 and 15 GPa at room temperature, respectively. The Vickers hardness at high temperature of the $CrB_2$ addition of 10 mass% $Cr_3C_2$ composite decreased with increasing measurement temperature. The Vickers hardness at 1273 K of the sample was 6 GPa. The Vickers hardness of $CrB_2$ addition of $Cr_3C_2$ composites was higher than monolithic $CrB_2$ sintered body. The powder X-ray diffraction analysis detected CrB and $B_4C$ phases in $CrB_2$ containing $Cr_3C_2$ composites.
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the ability of lithium disilicate ceramics to reproduce the A2 shade and to mask A4 substrates. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four discs (8 mm in diameter, shade A2) of high translucency (groups 1-3) and low translucency (groups 4-6) of IPS e.max ceramic with different thicknesses (0.5, 0.75, and 1 mm) were fabricated as monolithic structures. In addition, discs of medium opacity (group 7-8) with different core/veneer combinations (0.3 mm/0.7 mm and 0.5 mm/0.5 mm) were fabricated as bilayer structures. Specimens were superimposed on an A4 substrate (complex). The color changes of the complex were measured using a spectrophotometer on a black background, and the ΔE values of the complex were compared with either the A4 substrate or the A2 shade tab. One-way analysis of variance, the Tukey honest significant difference test, and the Fisher test were used to analyze the data (p < 0.05). Results: Significant between-group differences were found for comparisons to both the A4 substrate and the A2 shade (p < 0.05). When compared with the A4 substrate, the ΔE values in all groups were in the non-acceptable range. When compared with the A2 shade, the ΔE values in all groups, except groups 2 and 3, were in the clinically acceptable range. Conclusions: All translucencies and thicknesses masked the underlying dark substrate. However, the low-translucency IPS e.max Press better reproduced the A2 shade.

Bulk-sized PbTiO3 (PT), which is widely known as a high-performance ferroelectric oxide but cannot be fabricated into a monolithic ceramic due to its high c/a ratio, was successfully prepared with a high tetragonality by partially substituting Ni ions for Pb ions using a solid-state reaction method. We found that Ni-doped PT was well-fabricated as a bulk monolith with a significant c/a ratio of ~1.06. X-ray diffraction on as-sintered and crushed samples revealed that NiTiO3 secondary phase was present at the doping level of more than 2 at.%. Scanning electron microscopic study showed that NiTiO3 secondary phase grew on the surface of PT specimens regardless of the doping level possibly due to the evaporation of Pb during sintering. We demonstrated that an unconventional introduction of Ni ions into A-site plays a key role on the fabrication of bulk PT, though how Ni ion functions should be studied further. We expect that this study contributes to a further development of displacive ferroelectric oxides with a high c/a ratio.

Since the end of the 1990s, zirconia, which has been applied to dental prostheses, has been used in the form of coping or framework. The prostheses made in this way have been successfully used in the anterior teeth because they have no metal components as a structure. But in the posterior teeth, its use was limited due to the fracture or chipping of the veneering porcelain during the function. Later, as a solution to this shortcoming, a monolithic zirconia restoration was proposed in which a strong coping material was used in the form of a complete prosthesis. But, this resulted in some unesthetic results due to the characteristics of zirconia, which has excellent resistance to strong forces but is very white and opaque. However, now, due to technological advances in increasing the translucency of zirconia, it is possible to produce strong and esthetic zirconia restorations not only in the posterior region but also in the anterior region. In this article, the structural characteristics of various types of zirconia materials that have been developed so far, were discussed, and where the zirconia products actually in use belong to was explained.
Negative-temperature coefficient (NTC) thermistors based on nickel manganite spinel ($NiMn_2O_4$) are widely used for many applications, such as sensors and temperature compensators, due to their good thermistor characteristics and stabilities. However, to achieve thermistors with a high NTC B constant, which is an important figure of merit pertaining to the degree of temperature sensitivity, the activation energy should be high such that high resistivity at ambient temperatures results. To obtain a high B constant and low resistivity, Al and Si modified spinel structured $Ni_{0.6}Si_{0.2}Al_{0.6}Mn_{1.6}O_4$ hybrid thick films with the conducting metal oxide of $LaNiO_3$ were fabricated on a glass substrate by aerosol deposition at room temperature (RT). The NTC-$LaNiO_3$ hybrid thick films showed resistivity as low as < $100k{\Omega}\;cm$ at $90^{\circ}C$, which is one or two orders of magnitude lower than that of the monolithic NTC films, while retaining a high B constant of $NiMn_2O_4$ of over 5500 K when 20 wt% $LaNiO_3$ was added without a post-thermal treatment. These phenomena are explained by the percolation threshold mechanism.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the flexural strength and reliability of highly translucent colored zirconia for all ceramic restoration. Materials and Methods: Bar-shaped specimens (25 × 4 × 2.5 mm) were prepared from highly translucent monolithic zirconia. Three experimental groups were set up according to color (shade A0, A1, and A3). For each group, 20 specimens were prepared. Flexural strength was determined using a 3-point flexural test and results were analyzed with one-way ANOVA test. Weibull statistical analysis provided 2 parameter estimates: Weibull modulus and characteristic strength. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was performed. Results: There was statistically significant difference between uncolored (Shade A0) and colored (shade A1 and A3) (P < 0.05), but there was no difference between colored groups (P > 0.05). The uncolored group had higher reliability compared with colored study groups. On x-ray diffraction analysis of each group, typical peaks of tetragonal phase appeared in all groups. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this in vitro study, coloring highly translucent zirconia had significant effect on flexural strength and reliability. Therefore, clinicians should be careful when using highly translucent colored zirconia to prevent breakage of veneering ceramic and enhance aesthetics.
