Background: There has been on increasing emphasis on the importance of monitoring the safety of participants in a clinical trial to protect patients and maintain the integrity of the trial. The independent data monitoring committee (IDMC) has become common component of randomized clinical trials in recent years. Methods: It is important to consider the implications of different approaches that are being used in various countries. IDMC guidelines in Korea, US, and Europe were reviewed and compared to provide the objective, composition and operation of IDMC in detail. Results: IDMC is a group of experts in related subject are as who perform interim data monitoring to make a recommendation to the sponsor or organizer regarding appropriateness of trial continuation and the need for modifications of the trial. Independence of IDMC is preferred in order to minimize influence of factors unrelated to scientific, medical and ethical considerations that should underlie decision-making. Conclusion: IDMC has become an increasingly important component of clinical trials in recent years. Practical operating procedures need to be developed considering the future regulatory status of data monitoring committees.
The accuracy and integrity of stress data acquired by bridge heath monitoring system is of significant importance for bridge safety assessment. However, the missing and abnormal data are inevitably existed in a realistic monitoring system. This paper presents a data reconstruction approach for bridge heath monitoring based on the wavelet multi-resolution analysis and support vector machine (SVM). The proposed method has been applied for data imputation based on the recorded data by the structural health monitoring (SHM) system instrumented on a prestressed concrete cable-stayed bridge. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed wavelet-based SVM prediction method is examined by comparing with the traditional autoregression moving average (ARMA) method and SVM prediction method without wavelet multi-resolution analysis in accordance with the prediction errors. The data reconstruction analysis based on 5-day and 1-day continuous stress history data with obvious preternatural signals is performed to examine the effect of sample size on the accuracy of data reconstruction. The results indicate that the proposed data reconstruction approach based on wavelet multi-resolution analysis and SVM is an effective tool for missing data imputation or preternatural signal replacement, which can serve as a solid foundation for the purpose of accurately evaluating the safety of bridge structures.

Leading national R&D project to design a PWR spent nuclear fuel interim dry storage system that has been under development since mid-2009, which consists of a dual purpose metal cask and concrete storage cask. To ensure the safe operation of dry storage systems in foreign countries, major confinement monitoring techniques currently consist of pressure and temperature measurement. In the case of a dual purpose metal cask, a pressure sensor is installed in the interspace of bolted double lid(primary and secondary lid) in order to measure pressure. A concrete storage cask is a canister based system made of double/redundant welded lid to ensure confinement integrity. For this reason, confinement monitoring method is real time temperature measurement by thermocouple placed in the air flow(air intake and exit) of the concrete structure(over pack and module). The use of various monitoring technologies and operating experiences for the interim dry storage system over the last decades in foreign countries were analyzed. On the basis of the analysis above, development of the confinement monitoring technology that can be used optimally in our system will be available in the near future.

A maritime DGPS in Korea offers pseudo-range correction information and monitors integrity of correction data by using multiple GNSS receivers. The maritime DGPS reference station and integrity monitor service sets alarm threshold value about integrity monitoring parameters for preventing service interruption status. However there is no way to avoid system interruption according to malfunction of backup systems and outside factors. Therefore, in this paper, warning threshold values were proposed for maritime DGPS operator can be counteract in advance. And Markov analysis method was carried out for selection of these warning threshold values.

Recently, Incidence of natural disasters are growing gradually. The need for a monitoring system for maintaining the structural integrity of the high-rise buildings against extreme weather events such as typhoons, earthquakes is increasing gradually. One of the most important features in the tall building is to guarantee structural safety during the structure's life time. Structural monitoring technologies might be needed to manage structural safety and to protect human life.
Structural health monitoring has drawn great attention in the field of civil engineering in past two decades. These structural health monitoring methods evaluate structural integrity through high-quality sensor measurements of structures. Due to electronic deterioration or aging problems, sensors may yield biased signals. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop a fault detection method that identifies malfunctioning sensors in a sensor network. This method exploits the autoregressive modeling technique to generate a bank of Kalman estimators, and the faulty sensors are then recognized by comparing the measurements with these estimated signals. Three types of faults are considered in this study including the additive, multiplicative, and slowly drifting faults. To assess the effectiveness of detecting faulty sensors, a numerical example is provided, while an experimental investigation with faults added artificially is studied. As a result, the proposed method is capable of determining the faulty occurrences and types.

The piezoelectric thin film sensor can be used to interpret variations in structural and material properties, e.g. for structural integrity monitoring and assessment. To illustrate one of this potential benefit, PVDF film sensors are used for monitoring impact damage initiation in Gr/Ep composite panel. Both PVDF film sensors and strain gages are surface mounted to the Gr/Ep specimens. A series of impact test at various impact energy by changing impact mass and height is performed on the instrumented drop weight impact tester. The sensor responses are carefully examined to predict the onset of impact damage such as matrix cracking, delamination, and fiber breakage, etc. Test results show that the particular waveforms of sensor signals implying the damage initiation and development are detected above the damage initiation impact energy. As expected, the PVDF film sensor is found to be more sensitive to impact damage initiation event than the strain gage.

From a manufacturing standpoint it would be desirable to monitor the degradation of drawing die, that is essential for the maintenance of quality, the evaluation of product integrity and the reducing scrap. Acoustic emission is powerful method in monitoring fine wire drawing process, especially in detecting the die fracture at early stage. Experiments at so suggested that acoustic emission signals contained valuable information regarding the stage of a drawing process such as the surface appearance of products and the condition of lubrication. Using these informations makes AE monitoring techniques a possible tool in monitoring the drawing process operation. In order to approach this, this paper discusses the nature of acoustic emission signals produced in drawing process under various conditions. Experimental results are presented which illustrate the effects of wire and die material, lubricants, and drawing speed on the generation and the mean voltage level of acoustic emission signals. The results from these tests give controlling factors of acoustic emission generation.

A monitoring system for magnetic abrasive polishing process is necessary to ensure the polishing products the high quality and integrity. Acoustic emission (AE) signal is known to reflect the material removal phenomena in other machining processes. In a case of the magnetic abrasive polishing of non-magnetic materials, application of AE method is very difficult because of lower machining force on the surface of workpiece and the level of AE signal is extremely lower. In this study, AE sensor-based monitoring system is applied to the magnetic abrasive polishing. The relation between the level of the AE RMS and the surface roughness during the magnetic abrasive polishing of magnesium alloy steel is investigated.

In this paper we present compiler-based active rule system to efficiently maintain spatial integrity constraints in a heterogeneous, distributed environment. Specially, the prototype active rule system presented has been developed as a component of a whole middleware system called SDBC(Spatile DataBase Connectivity). Due to this reason, our active rule system is provided for heterogeneous ODBMSs in a distributed environment and used to define spatial integrity constraints using the active rules in E-C-A(Event-Condition-Action) type. Using this active rule system, an application programmer can free himself from a heavier burden on the integrity maintenance of application objects. In the compiler-based approach, active rules applicable to events raised by a database program are directly inserted into the program in a function type by the preprocessor, and then they are compiled with the application program source codes. One advantage of this approach is that there is no run-time overhead accompanied by monitoring all the database transitions when preprocessed program is executed. This active rule system also provides facilities to manage changed rules and dynamically interpret those rules at run-tuime.
