Vibration-based fault detection and condition monitoring of rotating machinery, using statistical process control (SPC) combined with statistical pattern recognition methodology, has been widely investigated by many researchers. In particular, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is considered as a powerful tool for feature extraction in detecting fault on rotating machinery. Although DWT significantly reduces the dimensionality of the data, the number of retained wavelet features can still be significantly large. Then, the use of standard multivariate SPC techniques is not advised, because the sample covariance matrix is likely to be singular, so that the common multivariate statistics cannot be calculated. Even though many feature-based SPC methods have been introduced to tackle this deficiency, most methods require a parametric distributional assumption that restricts their feasibility to specific problems of process control, and thus limit their application. This study proposes a nonparametric multivariate control chart method, based on multiscale wavelet scalogram (MWS) features, that overcomes the limitation posed by the parametric assumption in existing SPC methods. The presented approach takes advantage of multi-resolution analysis using DWT, and obtains MWS features with significantly low dimensionality. We calculate Hotelling's $T^2$-type monitoring statistic using MWS, which has enough damage-discrimination ability. A bootstrap approach is used to determine the upper control limit of the monitoring statistic, without any distributional assumption. Numerical simulations demonstrate the performance of the proposed control charting method, under various damage-level scenarios for a bearing system.
This article describes the development of a fiber optic accelerometer based on Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG). The accelerometer utilizes the stiffness of the optical fiber and a lumped mass in the design. Acceleration is measured by the FBG in response to the vibration of the fiber optic mass system. The wavelength shift of FBG is proportional to the change in acceleration, and the gauge factor pertains to the shift in wavelength as a function of acceleration. Low frequency version of the accelerometer was developed for applications in monitoring bridges. The accelerometer was first evaluated in laboratory settings and then employed in a demonstration project for condition assessment of a bridge. Laboratory experiments involved evaluation of the sensitivity and resolution of measurements under a series of low frequency low amplitude conditions. The main feature of this accelerometer is single channel multiplexing capability rendering the system highly practical for application in condition assessment of bridges. This feature of the accelerometer was evaluated by using the system during ambient vibration tests of a bridge. The Frequency Domain Decomposition method was employed to identify the mode shapes and natural frequencies of the bridge. Results were compared with the data acquired from the conventional accelerometers.
Nowadays, Cars are continuing to grow at an alarming rate but they also cause many problems such as traffic accident, pollutions and so on. One of the most effective methods that prevent traffic accidents is the use of traffic monitoring systems, which are already widely used in many countries. The monitoring system is beginning to be used in domestic recently. An intelligent monitoring system generates photo images of cars as well as identifies cars by recognizing their plates. That is, the system automatically recognizes characters of vehicle plates. An automatic vehicle plate recognition consists of two main module: a vehicle plate locating module and a vehicle plate number identification module. We study for a vehicle plate number identification module in this paper. We use image preprocessing, feature extraction, multi-layer neural networks for recognizing characters of vehicle plates and we present a feature-comparison method for improving the performance of vehicle plate number identification module. In the experiment on identifying vehicle plate number, 300 images taken from various scenes were used. Of which, 8 images have been failed to identify vehicle plate number and the overall rate of success for our vehicle plate recognition algorithm is 98%.
Bridge scour is one of the predominant causes of bridge failure. Current climate deterioration leads to increase of flooding frequency and severity and thus poses a higher risk of bridge scour failure than before. Recent studies have explored extensively the vibration-based scour monitoring technique by analyzing the structural modal properties before and after damage. However, the state-of-art of this area lacks a systematic approach with sufficient robustness and credibility for practical decision making. This paper attempts to develop a data-driven methodology for bridge scour monitoring using support vector machines. This study extracts features from the bridge dynamic responses based on a generic sensitivity study on the bridge's modal properties and selects the features that are significantly contributive to bridge scour detection. Results indicate that the proposed data-driven method can quantify the bridge scour damage with satisfactory accuracy for most cases. This paper provides an alternative methodology for bridge scour evaluation using the machine learning method. It has the potential to be practically applied for bridge safety assessment in case that scour happens.
Gait recognition can identify people's identity from a long distance, which is very important for improving the intelligence of the monitoring system. Among many human features, gait features have the advantages of being remotely available, robust, and secure. Traditional gait feature extraction, affected by the development of behavior recognition, can only rely on manual feature extraction, which cannot meet the needs of fine gait recognition. The emergence of deep convolutional neural networks has made researchers get rid of complex feature design engineering, and can automatically learn available features through data, which has been widely used. In this paper, conduct feature metric learning in the three-dimensional space by combining the three-dimensional convolution features of the gait sequence and the Siamese structure. This method can capture the information of spatial dimension and time dimension from the continuous periodic gait sequence, and further improve the accuracy and practicability of gait recognition.
A method to predict the risk of lung cancer is proposed, based on two feature selection algorithms: Fisher and ReliefF, and BP Neural Networks. An appropriate quantity of risk factors was chosen for lung cancer risk prediction. The process featured two steps, firstly choosing the risk factors by combining two feature selection algorithms, then providing the predictive value by neural network. Based on the method framework, an algorithm LCRP (lung cancer risk prediction) is presented, to reduce the amount of risk factors collected in practical applications. The proposed method is suitable for health monitoring and self-testing. Experiments showed it can actually provide satisfactory accuracy under low dimensions of risk factors.
In this paper, a prototype of power supply with a power factor correction is proposed. As a unique feature the proposed power supply, a status monitoring circuit is embedded on the switching power supply. The status monitoring circuit analyzes the functionality of the system and saves the key components of the power supply in the case of malfunctions. The results of various fault tests are reported to verify the operation and performance of the proposed method. This paper discusses the experimental results of the monitoring module and provides the technical information to monitor, predict, and troubleshoot the system against the potential failure of power supplies for real applications.
A wireless sensing system is designed for application to structural monitoring and damage detection applications. Embedded in the wireless monitoring module is a two-tier prediction model, the auto-regressive (AR) and the autoregressive model with exogenous inputs (ARX), used to obtain damage sensitive features of a structure. To validate the performance of the proposed wireless monitoring and damage detection system, two near full scale single-story RC-frames, with and without brick wall system, are instrumented with the wireless monitoring system for real time damage detection during shaking table tests. White noise and seismic ground motion records are applied to the base of the structure using a shaking table. Pattern classification methods are then adopted to classify the structure as damaged or undamaged using time series coefficients as entities of a damage-sensitive feature vector. The demonstration of the damage detection methodology is shown to be capable of identifying damage using a wireless structural monitoring system. The accuracy and sensitivity of the MEMS-based wireless sensors employed are also verified through comparison to data recorded using a traditional wired monitoring system.
In this paper, we developed a workload index for monitoring the durability test using operation information of an excavator. First, the acceleration and cylinder pressure were selected as load factors by analyzing operation data. Through load correlation analysis according to each load factor, Root Mean Square (RMS) and Work Load Range (WLR) were respectively derived as a load feature representing mechanical load. In addition, the workload index was used to quantify load features. For applying the workload index to monitoring, a real-time monitoring system consisting of sensors and embedded controller was installed on the excavator and the system was integrated with a remote monitoring environment using a wireless network. Results of load monitoring and analysis verified that the developed workload index was effective from the viewpoint of the relative comparison of the workload.

Multivariate exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) control charts for monitoring the variance-covariance matrix are investigated. A variable sampling interval (VSI) feature is considered in these charts. Multivariate EWMA control charts for monitoring the variance-covariance matrix are compared on the basis of their average time to signal (ATS) performances. The numerical results show that multivariate VSI EWMA control charts are more efficient than corrsponding multivariate fixed sampling interval (FSI) EWMA control charts.
