다공질 금속의 제조와 응용 (Production Processes of Porous Metals and Their Applications)

  • Porous metals are called as a new material of 21th century because they show not only extremely low density, but also novel physical, thermal, mechanical, electrical, and acoustic properties. Since the late in the 1990's, considerable progress has been made in the production technologies of many kinds of porous metals such as aluminum, titanium, nickel, copper, stainless steel, etc. The commercial applications of porous metals have been increased in the field of light weight structures, sound absorption, mechanical damping, bio-materials, thermal management for heat exchanger and heat sink. Especially, the porous metals are promising in automotive applications for light-weighting body sheets and various structural components due to the good relation between weight and stiffness. This paper reviews the recent progress of production techniques using molten metal bubbling, metal foaming, gas expansion, hollow sphere structure, unidirectional solidification, etc, which have been commercialized or under developing, and finally introduces several case studies on the potential applications of porous metals in the area of heat sink, automotive pannel, cathod for Ni-MH battery, golf putter and medical implant.

  • The properties of materials which are widely used in industry fields like automobile, shipbuilding, casting, and electronics are strongly needed to have higher surface hardness, lower surface roughness, and higher compressive residual stress. As mentioned above, for the purpose of satisfying three factors, a variety of researches with respect to surface improvement have been actively studied and applied to every industry. SKD61 which is mostly used for die casting process of cold chamber method must meet a countless number of problems which are thermal, mechanical and chemical from highly specific working environment at high temperature over 600℃. Above all, in case of plunger sleeves used for die casting process, thermal fatigue has a bad effect on the surface of an inlet where molten metal is repeatedly injected. On account of it, plunger sleeves cause manufacturers to deteriorate quality of products. Therefore, in this paper, to improve the surface of an inlet of plunger sleeve, multilayer PVD coating using Ti, Cr and Mo is suggested. Furthermore, The surface characteristics such as surface roughness(Rsa, Rsq), surface hardness(HRB, HRC) and residual stress using XRD(X-ray diffractometer) of coated samples and specimens are studied and discussed.

Study of the Electrolytic Reduction of Uranium Oxide in LiCl-Li$_{2}$O Molten Salts with an Integrated Cathode Assembly

  • 650$^{\circ}C$의 LiCl-Li$_{2}$O 용융염계에서 10 g U$_{3}$O$_{8}$/batch 규모의 장치를 이용해서 우라늄산화물의 전해환원 특성에 대한 평가를 수행하였다. 일체형 음극은 고체전극, 우라늄산화물과 우라늄산화물을 담아주는 다공성 용기(멤브레인)로 구성된다. 멤브레인 재료로는 325-mesh 스테인레스강막과 다공성 마그네시아 도가니를 사용하였다. 일체형 음극의 재질에 따른 LiCl-3 wt$\%$ Li$_{2}$O계와 U$_{3}$O$_{8}$-LiCl-3 wt$\%$ Li$_{2}$O계의 순환 전압측정법 결과로부터 전해환원 반웅 메커니즘을 규명하였다. 일체형 음극의 재질에 따른 우라늄산화물의 직접 및 간접 전해환원에 대한 실험을 수행하였다. 그 결과, 325-mesh스테인레스강막을 사용하여 직접 및 간접 전해환원으로 금속전환을 수행하였을 때 낮은 전류효율로 인해 우라늄산화물을 금속우라늄으로 환원시키지 못했으며, 마그네시아 다공성 도가니를 사용하여 간접 전해환원으로 금속전환을 수행하였을 때는 높은 전류효율로 인해 우라늄산화물을 금속우라늄으로 환원시킬 수 있었다

용융아연 도금공정에서의 SNOUT 내부 유동장 해석 ( I ) (Velocity Field Measurement of Flow Inside SNOUT of Zinc Plating Process ( I ))

  • PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) velocity field measurements inside the snout of a1/10 scale model of the Zn plating process were carried out at the strip speed $V_s=1.5m/s$. Aluminum powder particles ($1{\mu}m$) and atomized olive oil ($3{\mu}m$) were used as seeding particles to simulate the molten Zinc flow and deoxidization gas flow, respectively. A pulsed Nd:Yag laser and a $2K{\times}2K$ high-resolution CCD camera were synchronized for the PIV velocity field measurement. From flow visualization study, it is found that the liquid flow in the Zn pot is dominantly governed by the uprising flow caused by the rotating sink roll, with its effect on the steel strip inside the snout largely diminished by installing of the snout. The deoxidization gas flow in front of the strip inside the snout can be characterized by a large-scale vortex rotating clockwise direction formed by the moving strip. In the rear side of the strip, a counter-clockwise vortex is formed and some of the flow entrained by the moving strip impinges on the free surface of molten zinc. The liquid flow in front of the strip is governed by the flow entering the snout, caused by the spinning sink roll. Just below the free surface a counter-clockwise vortex is formed near the snout wall. The moving strip affects dominantly the flow behind the strip inside the snout, and large amount of the liquid flow follows the moving strip toward the sink roll. The thickness of the flow following the strip is very thin in the front side due to the uprising flow, however thick boundary layer is formed in the rear side of the strip. Its thickness is increased as moving downstream toward the sink roll. Inside the snout, the deoxidization gas flow above the free surface is much faster than the liquid flow in the zinc pot. Due to the larger influx of the flow following the moving strip in the rear side of the strip, higher percentage of imperfection can be anticipated on the rear surface of the strip.

피스톤 크라운용 단강에 인코넬 718 용접재료로 용접된 용접부의 특성 평가 (Evaluation of Characteristics of Welding Zones Welded with Inconel 718 Filler Metal to Piston Crown Forged Material)

  • The combustion chamber of a diesel engine is often exposed to a more serious wear and corrosion environment than other parts of the engine because its temperature increases as a result of using heavy oil of low quality. Therefore, repair and built-up welding methods must be performed on worn or corroded parts of the piston crown, exhaust valve, etc. from an economical point of view. In this study, Inconel 718 filler metal was used in repair welding on the groove of a forged steel specimen for a piston crown, along with built-up welding on the surface of another forged steel specimen. Then, the corrosion characteristics of the weld metal zone for the repair welding and the deposited metal zone for the built-up welding were investigated using electrochemical methods in a 35% H2SO4 solution. The deposited metal zone indicated better corrosion resistance than the weld metal zone, showing a nobler corrosion potential, higher impedance, and smaller corrosion current density. It is considered that metal elements with good corrosion resistance were generally included in the filler metal, and these elements were also greatly involved in the deposited meta by built-up welding, whereas the weld metal consisted of metal elements mixed with both the filler metal and base metal elements because of the molten pool produced by the repair welding. Finally, it is considered that the hardness of the weld metal was increased by the repair welding, whereas the built-up welding improved the corrosion resistance of the deposited metal.

전기로 폐 MgO-C계 내화재의 제강원료 활용 가능성 연구 (Basic Study on the Recycling of a Waste MgO-C Refractory Material as a Flux for EAF Steelmaking)

  • 현재 EAF 전기로 제강공정에서는 슬래그 중의 MgO 함량을 증가시켜 탈황능과 내화재 수명을 개선시키고자 돌로마이트(백운석) 용제(Flux)를 첨가하고 있으며, 또한 에너지효율을 증가시키기 위해 용강 중에 가탄재를 취입하고 있다. 이러한 견지에서 폐 MgO-C계 내화재를 재활용하는 연구를 진행하였다. 폐 MgO-C계 내화재는 MgO(>70%)과 탄소(>10%)를 대량 함유하고 있기 때문이다. 이런 목적으로 제강 슬래그를 대상으로 해서 폐 MgO-C계 내화재를 첨가하는 효과를 실험하였고 그 결과를 경소 돌로마이트를 첨가한 결과와 비교하여 폐 MgO-C계 내화재 재활용 효과를 평가하였다. 폐 MgO-C계 내화재를 사용해서 얻은 결과가 슬래그 염기도 측면에서 경소 돌로마이트를 사용한 결과와 유사하게 나타남으로써 기존 경소 돌로마이트 대체 가능성을 확인하였다. 특히 폐 MgO-C계 내화재를 사용한 경우에는, 폐 내화재에 다량 함유된 흑연 성분에 의한 슬래그 중의 철산화물과의 환원반응으로 CO가스가 발생하여 생긴 크고 작은 기포들이 관찰되었으며 이로써 슬래그 Foaming 효과를 기대할 수 있는 것으로 확인하였다.

OVERVIEW OF FUSION BLANKET R&D IN THE US OVER THE LAST DECADE

  • We review here research and development progress achieved in US Plasma Chamber technology roughly over the last decade. In particular, we focus on two major programs carried out in the US: the APEX project (1998-2003) and the US ITER TBM activities (2003-present). The APEX project grew out of the US fusion program emphasis in the late 1990s on more fundamental science and innovation. APEX was commissioned to investigate novel technology concepts for achieving high power density and high temperature reactor coolants. In particular, the idea of liquid walls and the related research is described here, with some detailed examples of liquid metal and molten salt magnetohydrodynamic and free surface effects on flow control and heat transfer. The ongoing US ITER Test Blanket Module (TBM) program is also described, where the current first wall/blanket concepts being considered are the dual coolant lead lithium concept and the solid breeder helium cooled concepts, both using ferritic steel structures. The research described for these concepts includes both thermofluid MHD issues for the liquid metal coolant in the DCLL, and thermomechanical issues for ceramic breeder packed pebble beds in the solid breeder concept. Finally, future directions for ongoing research in these areas are described.

흑연 전극을 이용한 우라늄 전해정련 특성 (Electrorefining Characteristics of Uranium by Using a Graphite Cathode)

  • 흑연음극을 이용하여 LiCl-KCl공융염내에서 금속우라늄의 전해정련을 수행하였다. Uraniurn-Graphite Intercalation Compound(U-GIC)의 형성에 의하여 우라늄 전착물의 sell-scraping이 일어나며 전해정련에서 stripping과정을 생략함으로서 전해효율을 높일 수 있다. 우라늄 전착물내의 희토류 원소 오염은 무시할 만 하였으나 약 300ppm정도의 탄소가 오염되어 있는 것으로 관찰되었다. 탄소 오염은 이트륨을 이용한 정제공정 등을 거칠 경우 제거 가능하리라 사료된다. 회수된 우라늄 전착물의 조직 특성을 분석하였으며, 스틸 음극에 의해 회수된 전착물과 비교하였다. 이 결과는 초기 실험결과 이며 보다 심층적 연구를 통하여 사용 후 금속핵연료의 전해정련 개념을 개선시킬 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

선택적 레이저 용융공정을 이용한 316L 스테인리스강 분말 3차원 조형체의 미세조직 및 경도 연구 (Study on Microstructures and Hardness of STS316L Fabricated by Selective Laser Melting)

  • In this study, STS316L powders prepared by gas atomization are used to manufacture bulk structures with dimensions of $10{\times}10{\times}10mm^3$ using selective laser melting (SLM). The microstructures and hardness of the fabricated 316L stainless steel has been investigated with the laser beam overlap varied from 10% to 70%. The microstructures of the fabricated STS316L samples show a decrease in the balling and satellite of powders introducing defect in the bulk samples and the porosity caused by the gap between the molten metal pools disappearing as the overlap ratio increases, whereas a low overlap ratio results in significant balling and a large amount of isolated powders due to the increased gap between the melt pools. Furthermore, the highest value in Vickers hardness is obtained for the sample fabricated by 30% overlapped laser beams. These results show that the overlap ratio of laser beams in the SLM process should be considered as an important process parameter.

적층 가공된 3차원 조형체의 치밀화에 미치는 단일 melt pool 형상의 영향 (The Influence of a Single Melt Pool Morphology on Densification Behavior of Three-Dimensional Structure Fabricated by Additive Manufacturing)

  • Selective laser melting (SLM) can produce a layer of a metal powder and then fabricate a three-dimensional structure by a layer-by-layer method. Each layer consists of several lines of molten metal. Laser parameters and thermal properties of the materials affect the geometric characteristics of the melt pool such as its height, depth, and width. The geometrical characteristics of the melt pool are determined herein by optical microscopy and three-dimensional bulk structures are fabricated to investigate the relationship between them. Powders of the commercially available Fe-based tool steel AISI H13 and Ni-based superalloy Inconel 738LC are used to investigate the effect of material properties. Only the scan speed is controlled to change the laser parameters. The laser power and hatch space are maintained throughout the study. Laser of a higher energy density is seen to melt a wider and deeper range of powder and substrate; however, it does not correspond with the most highly densified three-dimensional structure. H13 shows the highest density at a laser scan speed of 200 mm/s whereas Inconel 738LC shows the highest density at 600 mm/s.
