  • The interfacial adhesion energy between resist and a substrate is very important due to resist pull-off problems during separation of mold from a substrate in nanoimprint process. And effect of substrate surface roughness on interfacial adhesion energy is very important. In this paper, we have treated glass wafer surface using $CF_4$ gas for increase surface roughness and it has tested interfacial adhesion properties of UV resin/glass substrate interfaces by 4 point bending test. The interfacial adhesion energies by bare, 30, 60 and 90 sec surface treatments are 0.62, 1.4, 1.36 and 2 $J/m^2$, respectively. The test results showed quantitative comparisons of interfacial fracture energy (G) effect of glass wafer surface roughness.

  • In this paper, we present a fabrication method of functionalized gold nanostructures on flexible substrate that can be implemented for plasmonic sensing application. For biomolecular sensing, many researchers exploit unconventional lithography method like nanoimprint lithography (NIP), contact transfer lithography, soft lithography, colloidal transfer printing due to its usability and easy to functionalization. In particular, nanoimprint and contact transfer lithography need to have anti-adhesion layer for distinctive metallic properties on the flexible substrates. However, when metallic thin film was deposited on the anti-adhesion layer coated substrates, we discover much aggravation of the mold by repetitive use. Thus it would be impossible to get a high quality of metal nanostructure on the transferred substrate for developing flexible electronics based transfer printing. Here we demonstrate a method for nano-pillar mold and transfer the controllable nanoparticle array on the flexible substrates without an anti-adhesion layer. Also functionalization of gold was investigated by the different length of thiol applied for effectively localized surface plasmonic resonance sensing. First, a focused ion beam (FIB) and ICP-RIE are used to fabricate the nanoscale pillar array. Then gold metal layer is deposited onto the patterned nanostructure. The metallic 130 nm and 250 nm nanodisk pattern are transferred onto flexible polymer substrate by bi-layer functionalized contact imprinting which can be tunable surface energy interfaces. Different thiol reagents such as Thioglycolic acid (98%), 3-Mercaptopropionic acid (99%), 11-Mercaptoundecanoic acid (95%) and 16-Mercaptohexadecanoic acid (90%) are used. Overcoming the repeatedly usage of the anti-adhesion layer mold which has less uniformity and not washable interface, contact printing method using bi-layer gold array are not only expedient access to fabrication but also have distinctive properties including anti-adhesion layer free, functionalized bottom of the gold nano disk, repeatedly replicate the pattern on the flexible substrate. As a result we demonstrate the feasibility of flexible plasmonic sensing interface and anticipate that the method can be extended to variable application including the portable bio sensor via mass production of stable nanostructure array and other nanophotonic application.

  • Objectives: Although the coating of surface sealants to dental composite resin may potentially reduce bacterial adhesion, there seems to be little information regarding this issue. This preliminary in vitro study investigated the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) on the dental composite resins coated with three commercial surface sealants. Materials and Methods: Composite resin (Filtek Z250) discs (8 mm in diameter, 1 mm in thickness) were fabricated in a mold covered with a Mylar strip (control). In group PoGo, the surfaces were polished with PoGo. In groups PS, OG, and FP, the surfaces polished with PoGo were coated with the corresponding surface sealants (PermaSeal, PS; OptiGuard, OG; Fortify Plus, FP). The surfaces of the materials and S. mutans cells were characterized by various methods. S. mutans adhesion to the surfaces was quantitatively evaluated using flow cytometry (n = 9). Results: Group OG achieved the lowest water contact angle among all groups tested (p < 0.001). The cell surface of S. mutans tested showed hydrophobic characteristics. Group PoGo exhibited the greatest bacterial adhesion among all groups tested (p < 0.001). The sealant-coated groups showed statistically similar (groups PS and FP, p > 0.05) or significantly lower (group OG, p < 0.001) bacterial adhesion when compared with the control group. Conclusions: The application of the surface sealants significantly reduced S. mutans adhesion to the composite resin polished with the PoGo.

  • Ti-Al-Si target and Cr-Si target are sputtered alternately to develop a multi-layered nitride coating on a steel mold to improve die-casting lifetime. Prior to the multi-layer deposition, a CrN layer is developed as a buffer layer on the mold to suppress the diffusion of reactive elements and enhance the cohesive strength of the multi-layer deposition. Approximately 50 nm CrSiN and TiAlSiN layers are deposited layer by layer, and form about three ㎛-thickness of multi-layered coating. From the observation of the uncoated and coated steel molds after the acceleration experiment of liquid metal injection casting, the uncoated mold is severely eroded by the adhesion of molten metallic glass. On the other hand, the multi-layer coating on the mold prevents element diffusion from the metallic glass and mold erosion during the experiment. The multi-layer structure of the coating transforms the nano-composite structured coating during the acceleration test. Since the nano-composite structure disrupts element diffusion to molten metallic glass, despite microstructure changes, the coating is not eroded by the 1,050 ℃ molten metallic glass.

  • A two-dimensional photonic crystal structure was investigated using a roll-to-roll nanoreplication and physical vapor deposition processes for the inexpensive enhanced fluorescence substrate which is not sensitive to the polarization directions of excitation light source. An 8 inch silicon master having nano dot array with a diameter of 200 nm, a height of 100 nm and a pitch of 400 nm was prepared by KrF laser scanning lithography and reactive ion etching processes. A flexible polymer mold was fabricated by flat type UV replication process and a deposition of 10 nm nickel layer as an anti-adhesion layer. A roll mold was prepared by warping the flexible polymer mold on an aluminum roll base and a roll-to-roll UV replication process was carried out using the roll mold. After the deposition of ~ 100 nm $TiO_2$ layer on the replicated nano dot array, a 2 dimensional photonic crystal structure was realized with a resonance wavelength of 635 nm for both p- and s-polarized light sources.

  • Polycarbonate has a high transmittance to light, low specific gravity, flexibility and cost-effectiveness that extends the application field of the polymer to bio-engineering, optics, electronic parts, etc. Moreover, electro plating of metallic film on PC could endow the parts the electromagnetic interference shielding capability. However, poor adhesion of copper on PC limited the wide usage in the industry. In this work, a composite(PC/ABS) and MmSH(Momentary mold Surface Heating) injection process were used to improve the plating characteristics; plating thickness, gloss and adhesion. Also plasma treatment and chemical treatment were employed for improving adhesion. Plating characteristics on PC/ABS were better than those on PC due to the anchoring effect of butadiene. MmSH injection process could ameliorate the gloss and coating adhesion. Also plating thickness and adhesion of PC and PC/ABS were increased by plasma treatment.

  • Poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) tire cord has relatively lower adhesion properties caused by limited reacting sites. In order to improve the adhesion force between PET tire cord and rubber, an additional process to activate surface of PET has been employed. Atmospheric plasma was used to substitute the chemical finishing process of PET tire cord as a green dipping process. Contact angle was measured to confirm surface change of PET after plasma treatment. The treated PET tire cords with/without resorcinol-formaldehyde-latex(RFL) and unvulcanized rubber were vulcanized in a testing mold at $160^{\circ}C$. After atmospheric plasma treatment of PET tire cord, adhesion force was somewhat increased under some conditions.

  • For the mold die sticking mechanism, the major explanation is that EMC filler of silica wears die surface roughened, which results in increase of adhesion strength. As big differences in experimental results from semiconductor manufacturers are dependent on EMC models, however, chemisorptions or acid-base interaction is apt to be also functioning as major mechanisms. In this investigation, the plasma source ion implantation (PSII) using $O_2$, $N_2$, and $CF_4$ modifies sample surface to form a new dense layer and improve surface hardness, and change metal surface condition from hydrophilic to hydrophobic and vice versa. Through surface energy quantification by measuring contact angle and surface ion coupling state analysis by Auger, major governing mechanism for sticking issue was figured out to be a complex of mechanical and chemical factors.

  • For the mold die sticking mechanism, the major explanation is that the silica as a filler in EMC (epoxy molding compound) wears die surface to be roughened, which results in increase of adhesion strength. As the sticking behavior, however, showed strong dependency on the EMC models based on the experimental results from different semiconductor manufacturers, chemisorption or acid-base interaction is apt to be also functioning as major mechanisms. In this investigation, the plasma source ion implantation (PSII) using $O_2, N_2$, and $CF_4$ modifies sample surface to form a new dense layer and improve surface hardness, and change metal surface condition from hydrophilic to hydrophobic or vice versa. • We reported the direct effect of intrinsic surface energy of dry adhesive material to the Van der Waals and capillary forces contributions of the total adhesion force in an artificial gecko-inspired adhesion system. To mimic the gecko foot we fabricated tilted nanohairy structures using both lithography and ion beam treatment. The nanohairy structures were replicated from Si wafer mold using UV curable polymeric materials. The control of nanohairs slanting angles was based on the uniform linear argon ion irradiation to the nanohairy polymeric surface. The surface energy was studied utilizing subsequent conventional oxygen ion treatment on the nanohairy structures which resulted in gradient surface energy. Our shear adhesion test results were found in good agreement with the accepted Van der Waals and capillary forces theory in the gecko adhesion system. Surface energy would give a direct impact to the effective Hamaker constant in Van der Waals force and the filling angle (${\varphi}$) of water meniscus in capillary force contributions of gecko inspired adhesion system. With the increasing surface energy, the effective Hamaker constant also increased but the filling angle decreased, resulting in a competition between the two forces. Using a simple mathematical model, we compared our experimental results to show the quantitative contributions of Van der Waals and capillary forces in a single adhesion system on both hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces. We found that the Van der Waals force contributes about 82.75% and 89.97% to the total adhesion force on hydrophilic and hydrophobic test surfaces, respectively, while the remaining contribution was occupied by capillary force. We also showed that it is possible to design ultrahigh dry adhesive with adhesion strength of more than 10 times higher than apparent gecko adhesion force by controlling the surface energy and the slanting angle induced-contact line of dry adhesive the materials.
