This study was conducted to investigate the influence of the changes in handsheet structure by beating, wet pressing and the addition of wood flour spacer on the water absorption and the moisture absorption properties. The higher beating treatment of BKP resulted in the denser structure of handsheet samples, which leaded to the lower water and moisture absorption. The wet pressing showed the similar effects by reducing the bulk of handsheets. In case of the handsheet samples with similar bulk structure made of different beaten pulps, the severer beating treatment increased the water absorption and the moisture absorption. The addition of the wood flour spacer resulted in the higher bulk following the higher water and moisture adsorption. Since the water and the moisture absorption properties of paper products could greatly affect on not only the product quality but also the process runnability, the control of the water response of paper product has been considered as very important technology. The results of this study might be useful for control of water and moisture absorption properties of paper products.
This research was carried out to compare structure, equilibrium moisture content(EMC), adsorption and acoustical properties between 4 retention levels of saligenin(o-hydroxybenzyl alcohol) treated, heat-treated and untreated chestnut(Castanea crenata S. et Z.) and paulownia(Paulownia spp.) woods. The cell structures of untreated wood and heat-treated wood were not different but the cell wall of saligenin treated wood was thicker than that of untreated wood for both species. EMC of untreated wood was the highest, next was that of heat-treated wood, and that of saligenin treated wood was the lowest, and among saligenin treated woods, EMC was decreased as retention level increased for both species. Adsorption curves were parabolically increased. Acoustical properties of saligenin treated wood were most improved, and the next were those of heat-treated wood. Comprehensive acoustical property was improved at retention level 20% and 30% for chestnut wood, and at retention level 80% for paulownia wood.

This study was carried out to evaluate quantitatively some properties (density, equilibrium moisture content, shrinkage, water vapor adsorption, water absorptivity, compressive strength, bending strength, hardness and decay resistance) of Larix kaempferi lumber which was heat-treated by hot air and has been used commercially in Korea. Equilibrium moisture content of the heat-treated wood was decreased with increase of hydrophobicity. Dimensional stability of the wood was improved with decrease of shrinkage, water vapor adsorption and free water absorptivity. Also, with the thermo-chemical changes of wood component and lower equilibrium moisture content, decay resistance and compressive strength of heat-treated wood were increased. But, bending strength and hardness of wood were decreased.
The characteristic changes in weight, moisture content, and dimension at the early adsorptiondesorption stage of PEG-treated Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis), Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi), mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica) and sargent cherry (Prunus sargentii) woods were investigated. The wood samples were treated with PEG 1000, 2000 and 4000, and conditioned at the relative 98%, 65% and 20% for humidities of one week. The weight of Korean pine, Japanese larch and sargent cherry woods treated with PEG 1000 and 2000 during the adsorption-desorption was significantly changed, but mongolian oak was slightly changed. Moisture content was highly Moisture content was highly fluctuated by the change of relative humidity in the three species except oak wood. Although the weight of PEG-treated wood; however, changes in dimension could be prevented by PEG treatment in all species tested.

The water-vapor sorption isotherms of viscose rayon and of modified viscose rayon were studied to elucidate the change of sorptivity by the DMDHEU resin finish. To determine the sorption isotherms, moisture regains of the samples were measured at various humidities. The sorption isotherms were determined by the BET and GAB multilayer adsorption theories. The adsorption isotherm of the starting rayon was Brunauer Type II while with increasing resin content those of the DMDHEU-treated rayon became progressively more like Type IV. The DMDHEU-treated samples appeared to be hydrophilic due to the hydrophilicity of DMDHEU although moisture regains at higher humidities markedly decreased because of an impediment in swelling by crosslinkings. The $W_{m}$ value and surface area of crosslinked samples increased with increasing resin content. VR-R-6 which was the most heavily crosslinked viscose rayon had the highest $W_{m}$ and surface area values among all the samples. Relative sorption hysteresis was decreased as humidity increased for all samples. The untreated viscose rayon appeared to have a higher value than the DMDHEU-treated rayon.
Adsorption isotherms for chaga mushroom powder as influenced by particle size were investigated using a gravimetric technique. Samples were equilibrated in desiccators containing sulfuric acid solutions of known water activity (0.11-0.93), then placed in temperature-controlled chambers for approximately ten days. Equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of chaga mushroom powder increased with water activity in all samples. EMC was slightly greater in the samples comprised of smaller particle size, however there was no marked difference in appearance between the three samples. The chaga mushroom powder exhibited Type II behavior. When the BET model was used to determine mean monolayer values, 0.077, 0.077, and 0.070 $H_2O/dry$ solid was observed for <250, 250-425, and $425-850\;{\mu}m$ sized samples, respectively, however mean monolayer values were 0.121, 0.111, and 0.101 $H_2O/dry$ solid, respectively, when the GAB model was used. The experimental EMC values were related to the computed values from Henderson's model. The coefficient of determination and standard error for the linear regression were 0.997 and 0.003, respectively.

Gypsum board is easy to manufacture of a variety of forms and has stable mechanical properties and thermal properties. And gypsum boards are widely used to the walls and ceiling of the building as the interior building materials. The studies about technology of applying the various features in the gypsum board with additives are being actively investigated. Development methods for enhancing performance of the gypsum board using additives are largely divided into two categories. The first case is functional gypsum board that is to improve the moisture absorption and moisture-proof properties. Also studies of adsorption and decomposition of indoor air pollutants of the gypsum board using porous materials as an additive are being actively investigated. Another case is applying thermal storage materials which gives the heat storage performance to gypsum board. In this paper, we would like to introduce the various cases of gypsum board applied various additives.
Adsorption characteristics of 1,2-dichlorobenzene on the surface of heat treated silica gel were determined by the moment analysis. The heat treatment of the silica gel was performed at temperatures of 150, 500, and $800^{\circ}C$ and pulse-response of 1,2-dichlorobenzene was measured in a gas chromatograph equipped with thermal conductivity detector (TCD) using the packed column. Equilibrium adsorption constants and isosteric heat of adsorption were recorded the highest value at $500^{\circ}C$. This might be due to the increase of interaction between silica surface and 1,2-dichlorobenzene as the decrease of OH concentration and moisture by increase of heating temperature. Axial dispersion coefficient calculated by the moment method was about $0.046{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}1.033{\times}10^{-4}m^2/sec$ and pore diffusivity of heat treated silica gel at $500^{\circ}C$ measured the lowest value. Because heat treating at $800^{\circ}C$ caused the specific surface area to reduce, equilibrium adsorption constants and isosteric heat of adsorption were decreased.
The woodceramics are porous amorphous carbon and glassy carbon composite materials. Woodceramics attracted a lot of attention in recent years because they are environmentally friendly and because of their unique functional characteristics such as catalysis, moisture absorption, deodorization, purification, carrier for microbial activity, specific stiffness, corrosion and friction resistance, and their electromagnetic shielding capacity. In this paper, we made new products of clay-woodceramics to investigate the industrial analysis and ethylene gas adsorption for basic data of building- and packging- materials keeping fruit fresh for a long time. Clay-woodceramics were carbonized for 3 h of heating in a special furnace under a gas flow of nitrogen(15 ml/min.) from 3 layers-clay-woodparticleboard made from pallet waste wood, phenol- formaldehyde resin(hereafter PF, Non volatile content:52%, resin content 30%), and clay(10%, 20% and 30%). Carbonization temperature was 400℃, 600℃ and 800℃. Experimental results shows that the higher the carbonization temperature, the higher the fixed carbon and the lower the volatile contents. The higher the clay content, the more the ash content. The higher the carbonization temperature, the more the ethylene gas adsorption. Carbonization temperature of 800℃ gave the best reslts as same as that of white charcoal and activated carbon.(800℃-clay-woodceramic: 5.36 ppm, white charcoal: 5.66 ppm, activated carbon: 5.79 ppm) The clay contents did not make difference of ethylene gas adsoption.

The existing metal getters are invariably covered with thin oxide layers in air and the native oxide layer must be dissolved into the getter materials for activation. However, high temperature is needed for the activation, which leads to unavoidable deleterious effects on the devices. Therefore, to improve the device efficiency and gas-adsorption properties of the device, it is essential to synthesize the getter with a method that does not require a thermal activation temperature. In this study, getter material was synthesized using palladium oxide (PdOx) which can adsorb $H_2$ gas. To enhance the efficiency of the hydrogen and moisture absorption, a porous layer with a large specific area was fabricated by an etching process and used as supporting substrates. It was confirmed that the moisture-absorption performance of the $SiO_2/Si$ was characterized by water vapor volume with relative humidity. The gas-adsorption properties occurred in the absence of the activation process.
