We investigated how the polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) tolerance was degraded by semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-induced chirp for the 10 Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ), duobinary NRZ, return-to-zero (RZ), and carrier-suppressed RZ (CS-RZ) modulation formats. The power penalty was calculated as a measure of the system performance due to PMD for a given SOA-induced chirp. Considering only first-order PMD, all modulation formats have a similar PMD tolerance regardless of SOA-induced chirp. On the other hand, when both first- and second-order PMD are considered, the PMD tolerance of all modulation formats with the exception of the CS-RZ modulation format are degraded by SOA-induced chirp. Among all modulation formats considered here, the NRZ modulation format has the PMD tolerance with the highest sensitivity to SOA-induced chirp. When the peak-to-peak chirp induced by SOAs is $0.28{\AA}$, its PMD tolerance is degraded up to 4 dB for a differential group delay (DGD) of 50 ps. However, the PMD tolerance of the CS-RZ modulation format is largely unaffected by SOA-induced chirp.

Modulation recognition (MR) plays a key role in cognitive radar, cognitive radio, and some other civilian and military fields. While existing methods can identify the signal modulation type by extracting the signal characteristics, the quality of feature extraction has a serious impact on the recognition results. In this paper, an end-to-end MR method based on long short-term memory (LSTM) and the gated recurrent unit (GRU) is put forward, which can directly predict the modulation type from a sampled signal. Additionally, the sliding window method is applied to fast-changing mixed-modulation signals for which the signal modulation type changes over time. The recognition accuracy on training datasets in different SNR ranges and the proportion of each modulation method in misclassified samples are analyzed, and it is found to be reasonable to select the evenly-distributed and full range of SNR data as the training data. With the improvement of the SNR, the recognition accuracy increases rapidly. When the length of the training dataset increases, the neural network recognition effect is better. The loss function value of the neural network decreases with the increase of the training dataset length, and then tends to be stable. Moreover, when the fast-changing period is less than 20ms, the error rate is as high as 50%. As the fast-changing period is increased to 30ms, the error rates of the GRU and LSTM neural networks are less than 5%.
In this paper, we propose Time-Division-Multiplexing Tertiary Offset Carrier (TDMTOC), a novel GNSS modulation based on Tertiary Offset Carrier (TOC) modulation. The TDMTOC modulation multiplexes two three-level signals (i.e., -1, 0, and 1) while crossing over time, and is a type of TOC modulation designed specifically for signal multiplexing. The proposed modulation generates TDMTOC subcarriers of two different phases by simply combining two Binary Offset Carrier (BOC) subcarriers by addition or subtraction. TDMTOC has better correlation and spectral properties than conventional BPSK, BOC, and MBOC modulation techniques, and has good power and spectral efficiency since it can multiplex signals without power loss similar to time division multiplexing. To prove this, we introduce the multiplexing process of TDMTOC, and compare TDMTOC with Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK), BOC, Composite BOC (CBOC), and Time Multiplexed BOC (TMBOC) that are currently serviced in GNSS by simulations of various aspects. Through the simulation results, we prove that TDMTOC has better correlation property than modulations currently used in GNSS, less intersystem interference due to its wide spectrum property, and robustness in multipath and noise channel environments.
1) PSK : quadrature PSK and 8PSK, 2) QAM : 8QAM and 16QAM.
This paper presents an electronic ballast using a novel multiplex modulation method for the metal halide lamp. The proposed modulation method, which has a modulating signal of swept multiplex frequency, can eliminate the acoustic resonance more effectively than the conventional modulation method, which has a modulating signal of constant frequency. For the purpose of future application specific integrated circuits (ASIC), the controller of the proposed ballast has been designed only with erasable programmable logic devices (EPLDs), but without a microprocessor. In this paper, detailed proposed modulation schemes are described and experimental results on the proto-type 150W metal halide lamp ballast with the proposed modulation method are discussed.
Typical biomechanical system such as human body and mammals possess abundant muscles which are more than required for motion generation of such systems. We have shown that the excess number of muscles play important roles in spring-like impedance modulation. redundant kinematic structure, which is another feature of biomechanical systems, allows modulations of inertia and damping properties of such systems. In this work, we propose a frequency modulation algorithm which combines the spring-like impedance with inertia impedance. also, a load distribution method for frequency modulation is also introduced. The frequency modulation represents a simulataneous control of force and kinematic redundancies, which has not been addressed in the literature.
Carbon nanofibers were deposited on silicon oxide substrate by thermal chemical vapor deposition method. For the enhancement of the characteristics of carbon nanofibers, the source gases ($C_2H_2,\;H_2$) flows were intentionally manipulated as the cyclic on/off modulation of $C_2H_2$ flow. By the cyclic modulation process during the initial deposition stage, the formation density of carbon nanofibers on the substrate could be much more enhanced. The diameter of as-grown carbon nanofibers was also reduced by the cyclic modulation process. The cause for the variation in the characteristics of carbon nanofibers by the cyclic modulation process was discussed in association with the hydrogen gas etching ability.
In this paper, we suggest a new space vector PWM modulation method with very short processing time which does not need identification of nearest three vectors(NTV) and duty ratio for each vector. The suggested PWM method makes mean value of phase voltage to be same as reference during every modulation period by use of a triangle in small hexagon on multi-level vector space. This paper described the suggested modulation method can be successfully applied to the space vector modulation use of multi-level inverter by computer simulations and experiments.
