  • The purpose of the study, approaching from the aspect of the construction technologies, is to determine the architectural techniques of traditional wood architects in existence, through which the systems and techniques that create the inherent characteristics of Korean Architecture are clarified. With understanding traditional construction system and focusing on the fact that built environment results from the consistent standards and technologies of architects, this study inquires into the systematic standard and its formation that present in the process of planning for the overall scale and shape of a building from the following (four) perspectives. The study determines the characteristics of '間(Kan)' (unit; fundamental unit that measures Korean traditional houses) and the methods of columns disposition of which the '間 (Kan)' is made up. Once the necessary spaces are decided according to the size of a building, then floor plans are drawn with the standard unit, '間(Kan)'. The '間(Kan)', as a modular unit, is not only composing the floor plans, but also functioning as an Area unit, Space unit and Structural unit. Composition of '間(Kan)' varies with disposition of columns, and therefore multiform of floor and spaces are created. In this study, the '間(Kan)', as a standard unit, is used in the form of specific size and area, and it is demonstrated how the floor plans are developed by organizing the columns in accordance with the spaces requested.

  • In this paper, we propose a modular neural network based classification method for handwritten numerals utilizing rotated and translated images of an input image. The whole numeral pattern space is divided into smaller spaces which overlap each other and form multiple clusters. On these multiple clusters, multiple multilayer perceptrons (MLP) neural networks, specialized in those clusters, are constructed. Thus, each MLP acts as an expert network on the corresponding cluster. An MLP is also used as a gating network functioning as a mediator among the multiple MLPs. In the learning phase, an input numeral image is dithered by tow geometric operations of translation and rotation so that new numeral images similar to original one are generated. In the recognition phase, we utilize not only input numeral image, but also nearly generated images through the rotation and the translation of the original image. Thus, multiple output values for those generated images were combined to make class decision by various combination methods. The experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed method.

  • This study aimed to suggest practical and useful design directions for furniture for the rapidly-increasing university dormitory population. The process of the study took four steps; theoretical research, in-depth interview based on questionnaire, analysis, and development of design directions. Interviews were conducted with 25 university students living in dormitories in Seoul to find out problems with the existing furniture, students' satisfaction with the furniture, and their needs for other options. From these interviews, we found a few problems with dorm units, such as insufficient storage space, spaces too small for privacy, monotonous & standardized furniture design, and lack of multi-purpose furniture, etc. To support college students' complex lifestyles, five design directions were suggested from the analysis, such as a furniture design with highly multiple uses, modular furniture design, sufficient storage space, an application of various colors & materials, and practical use of dead space. Among these, two items were selected to be manufactured by the furniture design company. We expect that our suggested design directions for dorm furniture will support students' complex lifestyles, and satisfy students' needs with highly enhanced and better designed environments.

  • As the demand for the design of modular manipulators or special purpose manipulators has increased, task based design to design an optimal manipulator for a given task become more and more important. However, the complexity with a large number of design parameters, and highly nonlinear and implicit functions are characteristics of a general manipulator design. To achieve the goal of task based design, it is necessary to develop a methodology to solve the complexity. This paper addresses how to determine the kinematic parameters of a two-degrees of freedom manipulator with parallelogram five-bar link mechanism from a given task, namely, how to map a given task into the kinematic parameters. With simplified example of designing a manipulator with five-bar link mechanism, the methodology for task based design is presented. And it introduces formulations of a given task and manipulator specifications, and presents a new dexterity measure for manipulator design. Also the optimization problem with constraints is solved by using a genetic algorithm that provides robust search in complex spaces.
