This paper describes the modeling of CNG direct injection using gaseous sphere injection model. Simulation of CNG direct injection does not need break up and evaporation model compared to that of liquid fuel injection. And very fine mesh is needed near the injector nozzle to resolve the inflow boundary. Therefore it takes long computation time for gaseous fuel injection simulation. However, simulation of CNG direct injection could be performed with the coarse mesh using gaseous sphere injection model. This model was integrated in KIVA-3V code and RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model needs to be modified because this model tends to over-predict gas jet diffusion. Furthermore, we preformed experiments of gaseous fuel injection using PLIF (planar laser induced fluorescence)method. Gaseous fuel injection model was validated against experiment data. The simulation results agreed well with the experiment results. Therefore gaseous sphere injection model has the reliability about gaseous fuel direct injection. And this model was predicted well a general tendency of gaseous fuel injection.
A series of numerical calculations are performed in order to investigate the dispersion mechanism of toxic gaseous and solid pollutants in extremely short-term and short range. The calculations are carried out in an open space characterized by turbulent boundary layer. The simulation is made by the use of numerical model, in which a control-volume based finite difference method is used together with the SIMPLEC algorithm for the resolution of the pressure-velocity coupling problem. The Reynolds stresses are solved by two-equation, k-$\varepsilon$ model modified for buoyancy. The major parameters consider-ed in this study are temperature, velocity and Injection height of toxic gases, environmental conditions such as temperature and velocity of free stream air, and topographic factor. The results are presented and discussed in detail. The flow field is commonly characterized by the formation of a strong recirculation zone due to the upward motion of the hot toxic gas and ground shear stress. The driving force of the upward motion is explained by the effect of thermal buoyancy of hot gas and the difference of inlet velocity between toxic gas and free stream.

The coal gasification process of a slurry feed type, entrained-flow coal gasifier was numerically predicted in this paper. By divding the complicated coal gasification process into several simplified stages suh as slurry evaporation, coal devolitilisation and two-phase reactions coupled with turbulent flow and two-phase heat transfer, a comprehensive numerical model was constructed to simulate the coal gasification process. The k-$\varepsilon$turbulence model was used for the gas phase flow while the Random-trajectory model was applied to describe the behavior of the coal slurry particles. The unreacted-core shrinking model and modified Eddy Break-Up(EBU) model were used to simulate the heterogeneous and homogeneous reactions, respectively. The simulation results obtained the detailed informations about the flow field, temperature inside the gasifier. Meanwhile, the simulation results were compared with the experimental data as function of $O_2$/coal ratio. It illustrated that the calculated carbon conversions agreed with the measured ones and that the measurd quality of the atngas was better than the calculated one when the $O_2$/coal ratio increases. The result was related with the total heat loss through the gasifier and uncertain kinetics for the heterogeneous reactions.
This paper describes the smoke filling process of a fire field model based on a self-developed SMEP (Smoke Movement Estimating Program) codo to the simulation of fire induced flows in the atrium space (SIVANS atrium at Japan) containing smoke radiation effect. The SMEP using PISO algorithm solves conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species, together with those for the modified k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with buoyancy term. Also it solves the radiation equation using the discrete ordinates method. The result of the calculated smoke temperature containing radiation effect has shown a better prediction than the result calculated by only convection effect in comparison with the experimental data. This seems to come from the radiation effect of $H_2$O and $CO_2$ gas under smoke productions. Thus, the consideration of the radiation effect under smoke in fire should be necessary in order to get more realistic result. Also the numerical results indicated that the smoke layer is developing at a rate of about 0.1 m/s. It would take about 450 seconds after starting the ultra fast fire of 560 kW that the smoke layer move down to 1.5m above the escape level.

This paper describes the smoke filling process of a fire field model based on a self-deve-loped SMEP (Smoke Movement Estimating Program) code to the simulation of fire induced flows in the two types of atrium space containing a ceiling heat flux. The SMEP using PISO algorithm solves conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species, together with those for the modified k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with buoyancy production term. Also it solves the radiation equation using the discrete ordinates method. Compressibility is assumed and the perfect gas law is used. Comparison of the calculated upper-layer average tempera-ture and smoke layer clear height with the zone models has shown reasonable agreement. The zone models used are the CFAST and the NBTC one-room. For atrium fires with ceiling glass the ceiling heat flux by solar heat causes a high smoke temperature near the ceiling. However, it has no effect on the smoke movement such as the smoke layer clear heights that are important in fire safety. In conclusion, the smoke layer clear heights that are important in evacuation activity except the early of a fire were not as sensitive as the smoke layer tem-perature to the nature of ceiling heat flux condition. Thus, a fire sensor in atrium with ceiling glass has to consider these phenomena.

A numerical simulation of unsteady axisymmetric turbulent flow was performed for a reciprocating engine including port/valve assembly. The governing equations based on a nonorthogonal coordinate formulation with Cartesian velocity components were used and discretised by the finite volume method with non-staggered variable arrangements. The modified $\kappa-\xi$. turbulence model which included the effect of compressibility was used. The results of twodimensional transient calculation for the axisymmetric configuration were compared with the experimental data. Although slightly low rms velocity was predicted compared to the experimental data, predicted velocity distributions at the valve exit and in-cylinder region showed good agreements with the experimental data. The flow at the valve exit was separated at the same valve lift position with the experimental data. Two vortices incylinder region were generated during the initial intake process. The clockwise main vortex became strong and moved upward to the top wall. The counter-clockwise second vortex became weak and stick to the upper left corner of the cylinder. After middle intake process, new vortex adjacent to upper cylinder wall appeared by the piston motion and therefore, the in-cylinder flow was formed into three vortices. The cylinder pressure just before bottom dead center of piston was higher than inlet pressure and then the reverse flow occured at the valve exit. The in-cylinder flow characteristics were strongly dependent on piston motion, but insensitive to valve motion.
Dam-break flow occurs when an elevated dam suddenly collapses, resulting in the catastrophic release of rapid and uncontrolled impounded water. This study compares laminar and turbulent closure models for simulating three-dimensional dam-break flows using OpenFOAM. The Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model, specifically the k-ε model, is employed to capture turbulent dissipation. Two scenarios are evaluated based on a laboratory experiment and a modified multi-layered block obstacle scenario. Both models effectively represent dam-break flows, with the turbulent closure model reducing oscillations. However, excessive dissipation in turbulent models can underestimate water surface profiles. Improving numerical schemes and grid resolution enhances flow recreation, particularly near structures and during turbulence. Model stability is more significantly influenced by numerical schemes and grid refinement than the use of turbulence closure. The k-ε model's reliance on time-averaging processes poses challenges in representing dam-break profiles with pronounced discontinuities and unsteadiness. While simulating turbulence models requires extensive computational efforts, the performance improvement compared to laminar models is marginal. To achieve better representation, more advanced turbulence models like Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) are recommended, necessitating small spatial and time scales. This research provides insights into the applicability of different modeling approaches for simulating dam-break flows, emphasizing the importance of accurate representation near structures and during turbulence.

The finite volume based multi-block RANS code, WAVIS developed at KRISO, is used to simulate the turbulent flow field around the KRISO container ship (KCS) and the modified KRISO tanker (KVLCC2M). The realizable k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with a wall function is employed for the turbulence closure. The free surface flow with and without propeller is mainly investigated for the KCS and the double model flow is concerned for the KVLCC2M which is obliquely towed in still water. The computed results are compared with the experimental data provided by CFD Tokyo Workshop 2005 in terms of wave profiles, hull surface pressure and wake distribution with and without propeller for the HCS and wake distribution and hydrodynamic forces and moments with various drift angles for the KVLCC2M.

The blade leading edge is modified to control the secondary flow generated in the turbine cascade with fence by intensifying the suction side branch of the horseshoe vortex. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved with a high Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence closure model for investigating the vortical flows in the turbine cascade. The computational results of total pressure loss coefficients in the wake region are first compared with experiments for validation. The structure and strength of the passage vortex near the suction surface are examined by testing various geometrical parameters of the turbine blade leading edge.

To investigate smoke movement with radiation in a room fires, a numerical and experi-mental analysis were performed. In this paper, results from a field model based on a self-developed SMEP (Smoke Movement Estimating Program) were compared with Stockier's ex-periment and the experiments on various sized pool fires in a room with door The SMEP using PISO algorithm solves conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species, together with those for the modified k- $\varepsilon$ turbulence model with buoyancy term. Also it solves the radiation equation using the S-N discrete ordinates method (DOM). The result of the cal-culated smoke temperature considering radiation effect has shown good agreement compared with the experimental data, although there are large discrepancy in the hot smoke layer be-tween the temperature predicted by the SMEP with only convection effect and obtained by the experimental result. This large discrepancy is caused from the radiation effect of $H_2O$ and $CO_2$ gas under smoke productions. Hence the radiation effect under smoke in fire is the point to be specially considered in order to produce more realistic result.
