Activated carbon fiber (ACF) was surface modified by nitric acid to improve the adsorption efficiency of the propylamine. The adsorption amount of propylamine of the modified ACF increased $17\%$ more than that of as-received ACF. Desorption of propylamine from the propylamine saturated ACF was occurred in two steps, the first step started arround $50^{\circ}C$ showing the desorption of physically adsorbed propylamine and the second step started at $200^{\circ}C$ showing the decomposition of chemically adsorbed propylamine. Total desorption amount of propylamine from the modified ACF was larger than that of the as-received ACF because of increased functional groups. The oxygen and nitrogen contents on the modified ACF increased by 1.5 and 3 times compared with the as-received ACF. A part of propylamine adsorbed on ACF formed pyridine-like or pyrrolic structures with 2 carbons exposed on the surface of the ACF. It was found that propylamine reacted with strong or weak acidic functional groups such as -COOH or -OH existed on ACF surface.

Glycinin of more than $97\%$ purity was modified using maleic anhydride. Glycinin samples of $0\%,\;65\%,\;and\;95\%$ lysine residue modifications were used to determine the changes in turbidimetric characteristics of the protein due to maleylation. The solubility behavior of the protein as a function of pH was changed with maleylation. The isoelectric point of $65\%\;and\;95\%$ modified glycinin shifted to pH 4.0 and pH 3.5-4.0, respectively, as compared to pH 4.6 for native glycinin. Maleylated glycinins exhibited increased solubility at pH above 4.6. Turbidity of native glycinin decreased substantially by the addition of NaCl, but the stabilizing effect of NaCl decreased when the protein was chemically modified. The effect of NaCl on $65\%$ modified glycinin was intermediate between native glycinin and $95\%$ modified sample. Thermal aggregation of native glycinin was completed within 5 min of heating at $80^{\circ}C$. Maleylation contributed significantly to the thermostability of the protein at pH of 7.0 and 9.0, exhibiting little turbidity. Addition of NaCl suppressed thermal aggregation of native glycinin, but turbidity actually increased for the samples of $65\%\;and\;95\%$ modification.

In this study, a mortar was produced using re-dispersible polymer powders that addresses the defects of aqueous polymer and improves the durability of cement mortar. Also, an attempt was made to examine the properties of polymer modified mortars using re-dispersible polymer powders by strength and durability tests between ordinary Portland cement mortars and polymer modified mortars mixed with aqueous dispersion. The test showed that strength and durability are improved considerably compared with ordinary Portland cement mortar, and the performance of aqueous polymer cement mortar was considerably improved. Accordingly, it is expected that high-quality prepackaged polymer modified mortars can be produced using re-dispersible polymer powders.
Purpose: In this paper we propose modified Notz designs which are useful to experimenters who want to adopt the sequential experimentation strategy and to estimate second-order regression model with as few experimental points as possible. Methods: We first present the design matrices and design points in two or three dimensional spaces for such small sized second-order designs as small composite, hybrid, and Notz designs. Modified Notz designs are proposed and compared with some response surface designs in terms of the total number of experimental points, the estimation capability criteria such as D- and A-optimality. Results: When sequential experimentation is necessary, the modified Notz designs are recommendable. Conclusion: The result of this paper will be beneficial to experimenters who need to do experiments more efficiently, especially for those who want to reduce the time of experimentation as much as possible to develop cutting-edge products.

Ru-modified Pt nanoparticles of various sizes on platelet carbon nanofiber toward methanol oxidation were investigated in terms of particle size effect. The sizes of Pt nanoparticles, prepared by polyol method, were in the range of 1.5-7.5 nm and Ru was spontaneously deposited by contacting Pt nanoparticles with the Ru precursor solutions of 2 and 5 mM. The Ru-modified Pt nanoparticles were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The methanol oxidation activities of Ru-modified Pt nanoparticles, measured using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry, revealed that when the Pt particle size was less than 4.3 nm, the mass specific activity was fairly constant with an enhancement factor of more than 2 at 0.4 V. However, the surface area specific activity was maximized on Pt nanoparticles of 4.3 nm modified with 5 mM Ru precursor solution. The observations were discussed in terms of the enhancement of poison oxidation by Ru and the population variation of Pt atoms at vertices and edges of Pt nanoparticles due to selective deposition of Ru on the facets of (111) and (100).

Modeling busbar distribution system as a transmission line is an important subject of power line communication in the smart grid concept. This requires extraction of busbar RLGC parameters, accurately. In this study, a comparison is made between conventional and modified method for the aspect of optimum RLGC parameters extraction in the 1 MHz to 50 MHz frequency band. The usefulness of these methods is shown both in time and frequency-domain analysis. The frequency-domain analyzes show that the inherent power of modified method can eliminate the errors especially due to the discontinuities arise in conventional method. This makes the modeling approach of modified method more advantageous for the busbars due to its robustness against disturbances in the S-parameters measurements which cannot be eliminated with the calibration procedure. On the other hand, time-domain simulations show that the transmission line representation of the modified method is closer to physical reality by handling causality issues.
Reinforced concrete(R/C) is commonly used to structures because they have many merits that compressive strength, economy and so on. However, reinforced concrete has a crack at the tensile section which is due to the relatively lower tensile strength than its compressive strength Latex modified concrete(LMC) has higher tensile and flexural strength than the ordinary portland cement, due to the interconnections of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles. The purpose of this study was to investigate the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beam with latex modified concrete, having the main experimental variables such as concrete types(ordinary portland cement concrete, latex modified concrete), latex contents(0%, 15%), flexural steel ratios(0.012, 0.0235), and with/without shear reinforcement. The beam of LMC showed considerably higher initial cracking loads and ductility than that of OPC, but, similar to ultimate strength and deflection. This might be attributed to the interlocking of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles, water retention due to hydrophobic, and colloidal properties of the latexes resulting in reduced water evaporation. The beam with latex modified concrete could be adopted at field for controlling and reducing the tensile crack due to its higher tensile strength.

SLSV (single loop single vector) method is to solve the excessive computational cost problem in RBDO (reliability-based design optimization) by decoupling the nested iteration loops. However, the practical use of SLSV method to RBDO case is limited by the instability or inaccuracy of the method since it often diverges or converges to a wrong solution. Thus, in this paper, a new modified SLSV method is proposed. This method improves its convergence capability effectively by utilizing Inactive Design and Active MPP Design together with modified HMV (hybrid mean value) method. The usefulness of the proposed method is also verified through numerical examples.

Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution was investigated using $TiO_2$ coated on various acid modified activated carbon fiber (ACF). The ACFs/$TiO_2$ composites were prepared from titanium n-butoxide (TNB) as titanium precursor and various acid modified ACFs. The prepared samples are heat treated at 973 K. Then the ACF/$TiO_2$ composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). Moreover, photocatalytic degradation of MB by the ACF/$TiO_2$ composites was determined under UV irradiation. The results shows that the photocatalytic activity of ACF/$TiO_2$ composites ($AT1{\sim}AT4$) prepared with TNB and various acid modified ACF was much better than that of ACF/$TiO_2$ composite (AT) prepared with TNB and non-acid modified ACF, and the effects improved with order of sample AT3 > AT4 > AT1 > AT2.
Maxillary-malar deficiency is the most frequently occurring midface dentofacial deformity. Clinicaly patients with maxillary-malar deficiency exhibit malar and infraorbital rim deficiency and class III malocclusion. For treatment of these deformities, modified LeFort III osteotomy have been used. Modified LeFort III osteotomy advances maxilla with orbital rims and zygomatic bone anteroposteriorly. This is a case of patient who had severe mandibular prognthism with midface deformity. We performed modified LeFort III osteotomy for maxillary-malar advancement and simultaneous bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy for mandibular prognathism and autogenous iliac bone graft.
