  • The early post-war modern architecture introduced to Korea in the 60's and 70's have reached its 50 year cycle to emerge as candidates for the registered heritage. However, conservation is a complicated topic when applied to modern architecture due to its social and political status among general public, and is often a sacrificial target for demolition or insensitive alteration. This research tries to identify significant values extracted from the intrinsic characteristics of modern architecture, that can be applied to conducting successful renovation projects on modern architecture. The conservational values of modern architecture to be maintained are identified in this paper as: flexible open space, material and structural system, and extension of interior-exterior relation. These values are examined through the filter of comparative analysis on domestic and international conservation standards, along with cross-examination on recently renovated local works performed on the modern architecture of the period. This research aims to bring focus on conducting respectful conservation and renovation to modern architecture by identifying the significant values that is intrinsic to the modern architecture and is worth preserving.

  • In this study, we selected 12 typical traditional restaurants in Korea and China and analyzed their application of traditional design approach. Through this analysis, we tried to explore similarities and differences of Korean restaurants and Chinese restaurants in order to determine the preferable way to express their own traditional design. We categorized traditional design approach as cultural elements, designing method, coloring and materials. The results are as follows: First, following a tradition and interpreting a tradition are considered as compelling design methods to express traditional culture. However, when combining a traditional and a modern design approach, it is important to either strongly emphasize traditional design elements or use small number of traditional design elements as focal points in modern design restaurants. Second, when designing a traditional restaurant using modern design elements with traditional focal points, it is more desirable to follow and/or to interpret a traditional elements, rather than experimenting an excessively unconventional design. Moreover, the design elements of exterior of a restaurant shows the identity of the restaurant. Therefore, using traditional elements in the exterior helps recognizing the traditional characteristics and culture. On the other hands, for the interior of the restaurant, it is better to use modern design method and materials for the practical reasons, such as construction cost reduction and ease of construction. We also discovered that it is more effective to use traditional elements to the pattern and color. The results of this study will set a foundation for further research of developing a design guideline for traditional restaurants.

Dissimilarly, modern Korea kept conception of colors from Chosun periods that show the high frequency of 'Five Elements Colors' and neutral colors in Red, Yellow and Purple Blue. Today, the costumes of China, Korea and Japan use similar tones of color but each country approached in different selections of achromatic colors; Korean prefers color in Yellow Red, Purple, and Chinese in Green Yellow, Green and Japanese in Purple Blue. Light greyish and pale toned Yellow Red and grayish tone have increased in modern Chinese and Japanese costumes. Also both countries have corresponding assumptions in using color of Red in strong tone. The analysis of color and tone distribution showed that, Japanese costume colors in modern and present times have correlative number of use as in Western culture. Traditionally, Japan has least notion of using 'Five Elements Colors' which only gives minor changes by convergence of Western color culture. In other side, China had developed in color rather than tone compares to Korea and Japan by using many of the Red color of strong, vivid and deep tones which made red distinguishing color of China. Japan continues to use of low chroma colors and became a characteristic in modern and present day, also they use an abundance of color in Yellow Red, purple Blue. Korea has a higher frequency showing in light, bright tones of color distinctively compares to China and Japan.

For this purpose the present paper examined characteristics in art to wear and their impact on modern fashion design in the late 1990s. Distinguished from the traditional costume, art to wear disregarded a fixed concept on design elements such as the socio-cultural images, materials, and forms. The artists in art to wear freely expressed their "selves" and their individuality to their works in a variety of ways. In fashion design in the late 1990s the creative characteristics of art to wear were reflected in four ways: (1) eco-look, (2) humor, (3) deformation, (4) materials. The present study suggests that the creativity of the art to wear can establish the potentials and possibility in modern fashion design, and art to wear can be a crucial mediator in opening art into the real world.

Other parts and surrealistic images were shown with accessories utilizing body shapes. Second, amusing images were emphasized with humorous expressions, including simplification of body parts, childish decorations, fairy tale illusions and cartoon factors. Third, erotic images were presented with a more realistic expression of a partial image of a female body part, such as a lip or a tongue. Fourth, the use of facial images of celebrities in modern fashion design showed the phase of the times and the characteristic utilization of pop art as an image.
