  • The objective of this study was to develop a simple and efficient numerical modeling technique for dynamic crack propagation using the finite element method. The study focused on the analysis of a rapidly propagation crack in an elastic body. As already known, discrete crack tip advance with the stationary node procedure results in spurious oscillation in the calculated energy terms. To reduce the spurious oscillation, a simple and efficient moving node procedure is proposed. The procedure does require neither remeshing the discretization nor distorting the original mesh. Two different central difference schemes are also evaluated and compared for dynamic crack propagation problem.

  • This paper introduces modeling and its modal analysis procedure for exact and closed form solution of in-plane vibrations of general Timoshenko frame structures using exact dynamic element method(EDEM). The derivation procedure of the exact system dynamic matrices for Timoshenko beam frames is described. A new modal analysis procedure is also proposed since the conventional modal analysis schemes are not adequate for the proposed, exact system dynamic matrix. The proposed method provides exact modal parameters as well as all kinds of closed form solutions for general frame structures. Two numerical examples are presented for validating and illustrating the proposed method. The numerical study proves that the proposed method is useful for dynamic analysis of frame structures.

  • In this paper, we present a 2D multi-scale coupling computation procedure for localized failure. When modeling the behavior of a structure by a multi-scale method, the macro-scale is used to describe the homogenized response of the structure, and the micro-scale to describe the details of the behavior on the smaller scale of the material where some inelastic mechanisms, like damage or plasticity, can be defined. The micro-scale mesh is defined for each multi-scale element in a way to fit entirely inside it. The two scales are coupled by imposing the constraint on the displacement field over their interface. An embedded discontinuity is implemented in the macro-scale element to capture the softening behavior happening on the micro-scale. The computation is performed using the operator split solution procedure on both scales.

  • A walk-down procedure for fire modeling of nuclear power plants, based on deterministic fire protection requirements, was developed. The walk-down procedure includes checking the locations of safety shutdown equipment and cables that are not correctly indicated on drawings and identifying the existence and location of combustibles and ignition sources. In order to verify the performance of the walk-down procedure developed in this study, a sample of important equipment and cables were selected for hypothetical multiple spurious operation (MSO) scenarios. In addition, the hypothetical fire modeling scenarios were derived from the selected safe shutdown equipment and cables and an actual walk-down was conducted. The plant information collected through the walk-down was compared to the information obtained from the drawings, so that the collected information may be used as input values for the fire modeling.

  • Presented in the paper is a structured approach to modeling automated manufacturing system (AMS) in the form of an event graph. The proposed two-phase procedure for formal modeling is 1) reference modeling by schematic supervisory control modeling and 2) event graph transformation from supervisory control model. Also described is a formal model for a small-sized FMS in the form of an event graph.

  • Segmentation of LiDAR data is an important procedure in building modeling. Therefore, in this study, aerial imagery is used to group LiDAR data for both improving segmentation accuracy and modeling detail surface patches of the roofs. The results show that the proposed method is efficient to analyze and to model various types of roof shape.

  • A concept of preliminary design for mid-size superyachts is explored. First, the profile of a superyacht is interactively designed with the help of freeform curve functionality and graphical user interface (GUI) based interaction. The hull form is then constructed using major characteristic curves such as design waterline, deck sideline, and sections in addition to the predefined profile curve. After exterior hull modeling is done, the arrangement of significant interior spaces of all decks is carried out. A genetic algorithm is exploited to find a space arrangement by considering space fitness values, space proximity, and stairs connectivity of relevant spaces. A goal of the paper is to offer a step-by-step procedure for superyacht design from scratch or when initial information is not sufficient for complete design. For this purpose, a GUI based superyacht design system is developed. This design approach is expected to help users interactively design mid-size superyachts.

  • A procedure has been developed so that a die-face for stamping automobile outer panels can be design and modelled efficiently. The procedure is composed of four parts each of which corresponds to modeling major components of a die-face, i.e. tipped product, blankholder, draw beads, and step draw. The modeling techniques developed specifically for die-face design enable a designer to generate the shape of a die-face quickly with the minimum input, and the resulting models can be used in FEM analysis and NC tool path generation. This will lead to the reductions in lead time and manhours required for the design and manufacture of the stamping dies.

  • As the level of maunfacturing system automation increases, the issues of modeling and simulation of AMS(Automated Manufacturing System) are becoming more important. Proposed in this paper is the JR-Net(Job Resource relation-Net) modeling framework which naturally mimics the process of designing an AMS by FA(Factory Automation) engineers. Its main purpose is to provide a modeling tool which facilitate modeling work of AMS for FA engineers unfamiliar with simulation modeling. The proposed modeling scheme is based on the extensive observation that typical AMSs are built from the set of 'standard' components(or catalog items). As an application of the proposed model, two real examples of FMS('G7'FMS model plant, RPI FMS) are modeled by JR-Net, and in case of FMS model plant, a simulation program development procedure using JR-Net modeling results is explained. Finally, simulation result of FMS model plant is analyzed.

  • The modeling components in the object-oriented paradigm are based on the object, not the structured function or procedure. That is, in the past, when one wanted to solve problems, he would describe the solution procedure. However, the object-oriented paradigm includes the concepts that solve problems through interaction between objects. The object-oriented model is constructed by describing the relationship between object to represent the real world. As in object-oriented model the relationships between objects increase, the control of objects caused by their insertions, deletions, and modifications comes to be very complex and difficult. Because the loss of the referential integrity happens and the object reusability is reduced. For these reasons, the necessity of the control of objects and the visualization of the relationships between them is required. In order that we design a database necessary to implement Object Browser that has functionalities to visualize Java objects and to perform the query processing in Java object modeling, in this paper we show the processes for EER modeling on Java object and its transformation into relational database schema. In addition we implement Java Object Parser that parses Java object and inserts the parsed results into the implemented database.
