Since the numerical analysis was adopted in the mold design, lots of computational methods have been proposed for the simulations of casting processes for the various shaped molds. Today, it is possible to simulate the filling and solidification processes of most casts using the VOF technique. Though the three-dimensional numerical model based on the Cartesian coordinate system can be applied to any shape of cast, it becomes very inefficient when the three-dimensional model is applied to the cast of axi-symmetrical shape since the control volume includes at least 11 of the physical model. In addition, the more meshes should be distributed along the circumferential boundaries of curved shape in the Cartesian coordinate system fur the better results, while such curved circumferential boundary does not need to be considered in the two-dimensional cylindrical coordinate system. This motivates the present study i.e. developing a two-dimensional numerical model for the axi-symmetrically shaped casts. The SIMPLER algorithm, the VOF method, and the equivalent specific heat method have been adopted in the combined algorithm for the flow calculation, the free surface tracking, and the phase change heat transfer, respectively. The numerical model has been applied to the casting process of a pulley, and it was proven that the mesh and time effective calculation was accomplished comparing to the calculation using three-dimensional model.
Usefulness and clinical availability for surgery efficiency were evaluated by conducting pre-operative planning with a model manufactured by desktop 3D printer by using clavicle CT image. The patient-customized clavicle fracture model was manufactured by desktop 3D printer of FDM wire laminated processing method by converting the CT image into STL file in Open Source DICOM Viewer Osirix. Also, the model of the original shape before damaged was restored and manufactured by Mirror technique based on STL file of not fractured clavicle of the other side by using the symmetry feature of the human body. For the model, the position and size, degree of the fracture was equally printed out. Using the clavicle model directly manufactured with low cost and less time in Department of Radiology is considered to be useful because it can reduce secondary damage during surgery and increase surgery efficiency with Minimal invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis(MIPO).
Structural identification via modal analysis in structural mechanics is gaining popularity in recent years, despite conceptual difficulties connected with its use. This paper is devoted to illustrate both the capabilities and the indeterminacy characterizing structural identification problems even in quite simple instances, as well as the cautions that should be accordingly adopted. In particular, we discuss an application of an identification technique of variational type, based on the measurement of eigenfrequencies and mode shapes, to a steel frame with friction joints under various assembling conditions. Experience has suggested, so as to restrict the indeterminacy frequently affecting identification issues, having resort to all the a priori acknowledged information on the system, to the symmetry and presence of structural elements with equal stiffness, to mention one example, and mindfully selecting the parameters to be identified. In addition, considering that the identification techniques have a local character and correspond to the updating of a preliminary model of the structure, it is important that the analytical model on the first attempt should be adequately accurate. Secondly, it has proved determinant to cross the results of the dynamic identification with tests of other typology, for instance, static tests, so as to fully understand the structural behavior and avoid the indeterminacy due to the nonuniqueness of the inverse problem.

Studies on the control of the inverted pendulum type system have been widely reported. This is because it is a typical complex nonlinear system and may be a good model for verifying the performance of a proposed control system. In this paper, we propose the design of some fuzzy logic control (FLC) systems for controlling a Segway-type mobile robot, which is an inverted pendulum type system. We first derive a dynamic model of the Segway-type mobile robot and then analyze it in detail. Next, we propose the design of some FLC systems that have good performance for the control of any nonlinear system. Then, we design two conventional FLC systems for the position and balance control of the Segway-type mobile robot, and we demonstrate their usefulness through simulations. Next, we point out the possibility of simplifying the design process and reducing the computational complexity,, which results from the skew symmetric property of the fuzzy control rule tables. Finally, we design two other FLC systems for position and balance control of the Segway-type mobile robot. These systems have only one input variable in the FLC systems. Furthermore, we observe that they offer similar control performance to that of the conventional two-input FLC systems.

LBB(Leak-Before-Break) analysis is performed for the highest stress location of each different type of mateerials in the nuclear piping line. In most cases, the highest stress occurs in the pipe and nozzle interface location. i.e. terminal end. The current finite element analysis approach utilizes the symmetry condition both for locations near the nozzle and for locationa away from the nozzle to minimize the size of the finite element model and to make analysis simple when calculating the J-integral values at the crack tip. In other words, the nozzle is not included in the finite element model. However, in reality, the symmetric condition is not applicable for the pipe-nozzle interface location. Because the pipe-nozzle interface location is asymmetric due to different stiffenss of the pipe and nozzle(both material and dimensions). The simplified analysis approach for pipe-nozzle interface locaiton is too conservative for a smaller diameter piping. In tlhis paper, various analyses are performed for the range of materials and crack sizes to evaluate the nozzle effect for a LBB anlaysis. This paper presents methodology for developing the piping evaluaiton diagram at the pipe-nozzle interface location.

Composites are somewhat more difficult to model than an isotropic material such as iron or steel due to the fact that each layer may have different orthotropic material properties. In finite element literature the asphalt mixes are represented by using rectangular meshes, not the actual picture of their cross-sections. Asphalt aggregate size and distribution in the asphalt concrete sample, aggregate shape, and fractured surface effects are ignored. In this research, the actual image of the sample including all these effects were directly considered in the finite element. The samples, were cut into cross-sections and were scanned. The image-processing toolbox of Labview was utilized in obtaining the rectangular gray images of the scanned images. In the rectangular sample the aggregates were white and the asphalt binders were black. The grayscale images were converted by LABVIEW into the format required by ANSYS as an input file, with the same dimensions. The nodes at the bottom of the model were constrained in both x and y directions. Left and right edges were symmetry and top was free. Certain amount of pressure was applied along the top surface to simulate the tire pressure.
The extended Born, or localized nonlinear approximation of integral equation (IE) solution has been applied to inverting single-hole electromagnetic (EM) data using a cylindrically symmetric model. The extended Born approximation is less accurate than a full solution but much superior to the simple Born approximation. When applied to the cylindrically symmetric model with a vertical magnetic dipole source, however, the accuracy of the extended Born approximation is greatly improved because the electric field is scalar and continuous everywhere. One of the most important steps in the inversion is the selection of a proper regularization parameter for stability. Occam's inversion (Constable et al., 1987) is an excellent method for obtaining a stable inverse solution. It is extremely slow when combined with a differential equation method because many forward simulations are needed but suitable for the extended Born solution because the Green's functions, the most time consuming part in IE methods, are repeatedly re-usable throughout the inversion. In addition, the If formulation also readily contains a sensitivity matrix, which can be revised at each iteration at little expense. The inversion algorithm developed in this study is quite stable and fast even if the optimum regularization parameter Is sought at each iteration step. Tn this paper we show inversion results using synthetic data obtained from a finite-element method and field data as well.
Due to the long tectonic history and the very complex geologic formations in Korea, the anisotropic characteristics of subsurface material may often change very greatly and locally. The algorithms for the travel time computation commonly used, however, may not give sufficiently precise results particularly for the complex and strong anisotropic model, since they are based on the two-dimensional (2D) earth and/or weak anisotropy assumptions. This study is intended to develope a three-dimensional (3D) modeling algorithm to precisely calculate the first arrival time in the complex anisotropic media. We assume 3D TTI (tilted transversely isotropy) medium having the arbitrary symmetry axis. The algorithm includes the 2D non-linear interpolation scheme to calculate the traveltimes inside the grid and the 3D traveltime mapping to fill the 3D model with first arrival times. The weak anisotropy assumption, moreover, can be overcome through devising a numerical approach of the steepest descent method in the calculation of minimum traveltime, instead of using approximate solution.
In the present work, flow analysis has been performed in the steam turbine bypass control valve (single-path type) for two different cases i.e., case with steam only and case with both steam and water. The numerical analysis is performed by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The shear stress transport (SST) model and $k-{\varepsilon}$ model are used to each different case as turbulence closure. Symmetry condition is applied at the mid plane of the valve while adiabatic condition is used at the outer wall of the cage. Grid independency test is performed to find the optimal number of grid points. The pressure and temperature distributions on the outer wall of the cage are analyzed. The mass flow rate at maximum plug opening condition is compared with the designed mass flow rate. The numerical analysis of multiphase mixing flow(liquid and vapor) is also performed to inspect liquid-vapor volume fraction of bypass valve. The result of volume fraction is useful to estimate both the safety and confidence of valve design.
According to the structure characteristics of the non-uniform beam bridge, a practical model for calculating the vibration equation of the non-uniform beam bridge is given and the application scope of the model includes not only the beam bridge structure but also the non-uniform beam with added masses and elastic supports. Based on the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory, extending the application of the modal perturbation method and establishment of a semi-analytical method for solving the vibration equation of the non-uniform beam with added masses and elastic supports based is able to be made. In the modal subspace of the uniform beam with the elastic supports, the variable coefficient differential equation that describes the dynamic behavior of the non-uniform beam is converted to nonlinear algebraic equations. Extending the application of the modal perturbation method is suitable for solving the vibration equation of the simply supported and continuous non-uniform beam with its arbitrary added masses and elastic supports. The examples, that are analyzed, demonstrate the high precision and fast convergence speed of the method. Further study of the timesaving method for the dynamic characteristics of symmetrical beam and the symmetry of mode shape should be developed. Eventually, the effects of elastic supports and added masses on dynamic characteristics of the three-span non-uniform beam bridge are reported.
