  • Errors in inertial navigation system(INS) can be divided into two major groups which are system related errors and modeling errors due to approximation and linearization. Measurement noise, calibration, and alignment errors make up the first group, whereas the uncertainties in the gravity vector fall in the second category and are important error source for high quality INS, especially during high altitude and and/or long time missions, when the gravity errors tent to build up. The quality of a medium to high accuracy INS depends on the knowledge of the local gravity field.   • In order to control systems which are dominantly subjected to modeling errors and uncertainties, control strategies must deal with the effect of modeling errors and uncertainties. Since most of control methods based on system mathematical model, such as LQG/LTR method, have been developed mainly focused on stability robustness, they can not smartly improve the transient response disturbed by modeling errors and/or uncertainties. In this research, a fuzzy PID control method is suggested, which can stably improve the transient responses of systems disturbed by modeling errors as well as systems not entirely using mathematical models. So as to assure the effectiveness of suggested control method, computer simulations are accomplished for some example systems, through the comparison of transient responses.

  • This paper presents an integrated machining error compensation method based on captured images of tool deflection shapes in flat end-milling processes. This approach allows us to avoid modeling machining characteristics (cutting forces, tool deflections and machining errors etc.) and accumulating calculation errors induced by several simulations. For this, a high-speed camera captured images of real deformed tool shapes which were cutting under given machining conditions. Using image processes and a machining error model, it is possible to estimate tool deflection in cutting conditions modeled and to compensate for machining errors using an iterative algorithm correcting tool paths. This corrected tool path can effectively reduce machining errors in the flat end-milling process. Experiments are carried out to validate the approaches proposed in this paper. The proposed error compensation method can be effectively implemented in a real machining situation, producing much smaller errors.

SEM-based study on the impact of safety culture on unsafe behaviors in Chinese nuclear power plants

  • This paper uses 135 Licensed Operator Event Reports (LOER) from Chinese nuclear plants to analyze how safety culture affects unsafe behaviors in nuclear power plants. On the basis of a modified human factors analysis and classification system (HFACS) framework, structural equation model (SEM) is used to explore the relationship between latent variables at various levels. Correlation tests such as chi-square test are used to analyze the path from safety culture to unsafe behaviors. The role of latent error is clarified. The results show that the ratio of latent errors to active errors is 3.4:1. The key path linking safety culture weaknesses to unsafe behaviors is Organizational Processes → Inadequate Supervision → Physical/Technical Environment → Skill-based Errors. The most influential factors on the latent variables at each level in the HFACS framework are Organizational Processes, Inadequate Supervision, Physical Environment, and Skill-based Errors.

A Runoff Parameter Estimation Using Spatially Distributed Rainfall and an Analysis of the Effect of Rainfall Errors on Runoff Computation (공간 분포된 강우를 사용한 유출 매개변수 추정 및 강우오차가 유출계산에 미치는 영향분석)

  • This study was intended to investigate the rainfall-runoff relationship with spatially distributed rainfall data, and then, to analyze and quantify the uncertainty induced by spatially averaging rainfall data. For constructing spatially distributed rainfall data, several historical rainfall events were extended spatially by simple kriging method based on the semivariogram as a function of the relative distance. Runoff was computed by two models; one was the modified Clark model with spatially distributed rainfall data and the other was the conventional Clark model with spatially averaged rainfall data. Rainfall errors and discharge errors occurred through this process were defined and analyzed with respect to various rain-gage network densities. The following conclusions were derived as the results of this work; 1) The conventional Clark parameters could be appropriate for translating spatially distributed rainfall data. 2) The parameters estimated by the modified Clark model are more stable than those of the conventional Clark model. 3) Rainfall and discharge errors are shown to be reduced exponentially as the density of rain-gage network is increased. 4) It was found that discharge errors were affected largely by rainfall errors as the rain-gage network density was small.

  • As commonly known, sensor errors and faulty signals may potentially lead structures in vibration to catastrophic failures. This paper presents a new approach to deal with sensor errors/faults in vibration control of structures by using the Fault detection and isolation (FDI) technique. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach, a space truss structure with semi-active devices such as Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper is used as an example. To address the problem, a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) based fixed-order $H_{\infty}$ FDI filter is introduced and designed. Modeling errors are treated as uncertainties in the FDI filter design to verify the robustness of the proposed FDI filter. Furthermore, an innovative Fuzzy Fault Tolerant Controller (FFTC) has been developed for this space truss structure model to preserve the pre-specified performance in the presence of sensor errors or faults. Simulation results have demonstrated that the proposed FDI filter is capable of detecting and isolating sensor errors/faults and actuator faults e.g., accelerometers and MR dampers, and the proposed FFTC can maintain the structural vibration suppression in faulty conditions.

Nonlinear Filtering Approaches to In-flight Alignment of SDINS with Large Initial Attitude Error (큰 초기 자세 오차를 가진 관성항법장치의 운항중 정렬을 위한 비선형 필터 연구)

  • This paper describes the in-flight alignment of SDINS (Strapdown Inertial Navigation Systems) using an EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) and a UKF (Unscented Kalam Filter), which allow large initial attitude error uncertainty. Regardless of the inertial sensors, there are nonlinear error dynamics of SDINS in cases of large initial attitude errors. A UKF that is one of the nonlinear filtering approaches for IFA (In-Flight Alignment) are used to estimate the attitude errors. Even though the EKF linearized model makes velocity errors when predicting incorrectly in case of large attitude errors, a UKF can represent correctly the velocity errors variations of attitude errors with nonlinear attitude error components. Simulation results and analyses show that a UKF works well to handle large initial attitude errors of SDINS and the alignment error attitude estimation performance are quite improved.

Optimal Production Planning for Remanufacturing with Quality Classification Errors under Uncertainty in Quality of Used Products

  • This paper discusses a green supply chain with a manufacturer and a collection trader, and it proposes an optimal production planning for remanufacturing of parts in used products with quality classification errors made by the collection trader. When a manufacturer accepts an order for parts from a retailer and procures used products from a collection trader, the collection trader might have some quality classification errors due to the lack of equipment or expert knowledge regarding quality classification. After procurement of used products, the manufacturer inspects if there are any classification errors. If errors are detected, the manufacturer reclassifies the misclassified (overestimated) used products at a cost. Accordingly, the manufacturer decides to remanufacture from the higher-quality used products based on a remanufacturing ratio or produce parts from new materials. This paper develops a mathematical model to find how quality classification errors affect the optimal decisions for a lower limit of procurement quality of used products and a remanufacturing ratio under the lower limit and the expected profit of the manufacturer. Numerical analysis investigates how quality of used products, the reclassification cost and the remanufacturing cost of used products affect the optimal production planning and the expected profit of a manufacturer.
