This paper presents an investigation on seismic behavior of out-of-code Q690 circular high-strength concrete-filled thin-walled steel tubular (HCFTST) columns made up of high-strength (HS) steel tubes (yield strength $f_y{\geq}690MPa$). Eight Q690 circular HCFTST columns with various diameter-to-thickness (D/t) ratios, concrete cylinder compressive strengths ($f_c$) and axial compression ratios (n) were tested under the constant axial loading and reversed cyclic lateral loading. The obtained lateral load-displacement hysteretic curves, energy dissipation, skeleton curves and ductility, and stiffness degradation were analyzed in detail to reflect the influences of tested parameters. Subsequently, a simplified shear strength model was derived and validated by the test results. Finally, a finite element analysis (FEA) model incorporating a stress triaxiality dependent fracture criterion was established to simulate the seismic behavior. The systematic investigation indicates the following: compared to the D/t ratio and axial compression ratio, improving the concrete compressive strength (e.g., the HS thin-walled steel tube filled with HS concrete) had a slight influence on the ductility but an obvious enhancement of energy dissipation and peak load; the simplified shear strength model based on truss mechanism accurately predicted the shear-resisting capacity; and the established FEA model incorporating steel fracture criterion simulated well the seismic behavior (e.g., hysteretic curve, local buckling and fracture), which can be applied to the seismic analysis and design of Q690 circular HCFTST columns.

This study presents an analytical framework for estimating the thermo-mechanical behavior of a composite beam exposed to fire. The framework involves: a fire simulation from which the evolution of temperature on the structure surface is obtained; data transfer by an interface model, whereby the surface temperature is assigned to the finite element model of the structure for thermo-mechanical analysis; and nonlinear thermo-mechanical analysis for predicting the structural response under high temperatures. We use a plastic-damage model for calculating the response of concrete slabs, and propose a method to determine the stiffness degradation parameter of the plastic-damage model by a nonlinear regression of concrete cylinder test data. To validate simulation results, structural fire experiments have been performed on a real-scale steel-concrete composite beam using the fire load prescribed by ASTM E119 standard fire curve. The calculated evolution of deflection at the center of the beam shows good agreement with experimental results. The local test results as well as the effective plastic strain distribution and section rotation of the composite beam at elevated temperatures are also investigated.

To predict the time-dependent behavior of concrete structures, the models which describe the time-dependent characteristics of concrete, i.e. creep and shrinkage are required. However, there must be significant differences between the displacements that are obtained using the given creep and shrinkage models and the measured displacements, because of the uncertainties of creep and shrinkage model itself and those of environmental condition. There are some efforts to reduce these error or uncertainties by using the model which are obtained from creep test for the concrete in construction site. Nevertheless, the predicted values from this model may be still different from the actual values due to the same reason. This study aimed to propose a method of estimating the creep coefficient from the measured displacements of concrete structure, where creep model uncertainty factor was considered as an error factor of creep model. Numerical validation for double composite steel box and concrete beam showed desirable feasibility of the presented method. Consideration of the time-dependent characteristics of creep as one of the error factors make it possible to predict long-term behaviors of concrete structures more realistically, especially long-span PSC girder bridges and concrete cable-stayed bridges of which major problem is the geometry control under construction and maintenance.

Hydralic model experiments for permeable breakwaters with three different shapes of cap concrete were carried out in a two-dimensional wave channel to investigate the shape effects of cap concrete on transmission rate of the incident waves over the breakwaters. The model test results show that energy damping effects are significant in the following order; cap concrete with dissipation holes and apron, cap concrete with apron only, and cap concrete without dissipation holes and apron. It is concluded that the significant damping effects are due to energy dissipation of the incident wave as they pass through the holes and the apron.
The dynamic compressive behavior of concrete after freezing and thawing tests are investigated by using the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique. The stress-strain curves of concrete under dynamic loading are measured and analyzed. The setting numbers of freeze-thaw cycles are 0, 25, 50, and 75 cycles. Test results show that the dynamic strength decreases and peak strain increases with the increasing of freeze-thaw cycles. Based on the Weibull distribution model, statistical damage constitutive model for dynamic stress-strain response of concrete after freeze-thaw cycles was proposed. At last, the fragmentation test of concrete subjected to dynamic loading and freeze-thaw cycles is carried out using sieving statistics. The distributions of the fragment sizes are analyzed based on fractal theory. The fractal dimensions of concrete increase with the increasing of both freeze-thaw cycle and strain rate. The relations among the fractal dimension, strain rates and freeze-thawing cycles are developed.
The mechanical characteristics of newly recycled aggregate concrete on the basis of the proposed mix design model have been studied to develop the precast artificial fishing reefs. In the first task, the experimental test for the recycled aggregates taken from Jeju Island has been carried out to verify the material properties in terms of specific gravity, percentage of solids, absorption and abrasion of coarse aggregates. In the second task, the experimental parameters of newly recycled aggregate concrete are investigated to meet with the requirements of guidelines with respect to slump, unit weight, pH, ultrasonic velocity, void ratio, and compressive strength which are made of sea-shore sand ad slag cement. The natural aggregate and polypropylene fiber are added to newly recycled aggregate concrete to improve the compressive strength and quality. The optimal mix proportions for compressive strength are W/C=30%, S/a=15%, NA/G=50% in porous concrete case, W/C=40%, S/a=45% in plain concrete case, and W/C=40%, S/a-45%, PF=1.0kg/㎥ in fiber reinforced concrete case.

The tension stiffening in reinforced concrete member means increase of stiffness caused by the effective tensile stress between cracks and the tension softening behavior of concrete. This paper presents on the tensile behavior and tension stiffening of RC tension members. Direct tension tests were performed with a main experimental variables such as concrete strength, rebar diameter and strength. The tension stiffening was analyzed from the load-displacement relationship and was compared with ACI code, CEB model and the proposed by Collins & Mitchell. The results are as follows : The tension behaviors of RC members were quite different from those of bare bar and were characterized by loading and concrete cracking steps. The effect of tension stiffening decreased rapidly as the rebar diameter and strength increased, and the concrete strength increased. The proposed by Collins & Mitchell described well the experimental results, regardless of rebar types and concrete. But, ACI code and CEB model described a little differently, depending on the types. The effect of tension stiffening in RC member was the biggest near at concrete cracking step and decreased gradually to the bare bar's behavior as loading closed to the breaking point. Thus, tension stiffening in RC members should be taken into account when the load-deflection characteristics of a member are required or a precise analysis near the load of concrete clacking is needed.
The results of previous tests by many researchers have been compiled to evaluate the flexural strength of steel-fiber reinforced concrete beams. Existing prediction equations for flexural strength of such beams were examined, and a new equation based on mechanical and empirical observations, was proposed. In other words, the constitutive models for steel fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC) were proposed, which incorporate compressive and tensile strength. A steel model might also exhibit stain-hardening characteristics. Predictions based on the model are compared with the experimental data. For the collection of tests, a variation of the Henager equations, modified to apply to fiber-reinforced concrete beams, provided reliable estimates of flexural strength. The proposed equations accounted for the influence of fiber-volume fraction, fiber aspect ratio, concrete compressive strength and flexural steel reinforcement ratio. The proposed equations gave a good estimation for 129 flexural specimens evaluated.

The Brazilian tensile strength of concrete samples is a key parameter in fracture mechanics since it may significantly change the quality of concrete materials and their mechanical behaviors. It is well known that porosity is one of the most often used physical indices to predict concrete mechanical properties. In the present work the influence of porosity shape on concrete tensile strength characteristics is studied, using a bonded particle model. Firstly numerical model was calibrated by Brazilian experimental results and uniaxial test out puts. Secondly, Brazilian models consisting various pore shapes were simulated and numerically tested at a constant speed of 0.016 mm/s. The results show that pore shape has important effects on the failure pattern. It is shown that the pore shape may play an important role in the cracks initiation and propagation during the loading process which in turn influence on the tensile strength of the concrete samples. It has also been shown that the pore size mainly affects the ratio of uniaxial compressive strength to that of the tensile one in the simulated material samples.
The Purpose of this study is to recycle the waste concrete, which is generated in huge quantities, from construction works. in order to achieve this goal, it is important to determine the compressive strength, workability, slump, and ultrasonic velocity of recycled aggregate concrete. Thus, several experiment parameters are considered, such as water-cement ratios, sand percentage, and fine aggregate composition ratios, in order to apply the recycled aggregate concrete to pre-cast artificial fishing reefs. From the results, it has been shown that the proper mix designs for reef concrete are W/C=45%, S/a=50%, SR50:SN50 in recycled sand and natural sand mix combination case, W/C=45%, S/a=50%, SC50:SN50 in crushed sand and natural sand mix combination case, W/C=45%, S/a=50%, SR50:SC50 in recycled sand and crushd sand mix combination case. Also, this study shows that the shape and surface roughness of fine aggregate particles have an effect on the strength, slump, ultrasonic velocity of tested concrete, and the compressive strength ratios of 7days' and 90days' curing ages of recycled aggregate concrete are about 70% and 110% of 28days' curing age.
