  • Current methods for lateral thrust calculations are based on the classical formulations of Rankine or Coulomb. However, the previous studies indicate that lateral earth pressures acting on the wall stem, which is the function of deformation parameters of the backfill, are close to the active condition only in the top half of the wall stem and in the lower half of the wall stem, the lateral earth pressures are significantly in excess of the active pressures. This paper presents the compressible inclusion function of EPS which can results in reduction of static earth pressure by accomodating the movement of retained soil. A series of model tests were conducted to evaluate the reduction of static earth pressure using EPS inclusion and determine the optimum stiffness of EPS. Also, field test was conducted to evaluate the reduction of static earth pressure using EPS inclusion. Based on field test it is found that the magnitude of static earth pressure can be reduced about 20% compared with classical active earth pressure.

  • This paper deals with the results for a numerical analysis of single piles and pile groups in multi-layers soil(granite soil-clay-granite soil) subjected to monotonous lateral loading using the ABAQUS finite element software. The investigated variables in this study include free head and embedded capped single pile, pile diameter (0.5m), pile length (10m), and pile groups. Numerical analyses were conducted by variation of spacing piles(s=3D, 4D, 5D) to compare the behaviour of single pile without cap and group pile. The $1{\times}3$ pile group(leading pile, middle pile, trail pile) was selected to investigate the individual pile and group lateral resistance, the distribution of the resistance among the piles. The analysis model of clay and the material of granite soil was modeled by using Druker-Prager constitutive relationship and existing treatise respectively. The pile was considered as a elastic circular concrete pile. As a result, the more pile space was extended, the value of P-multiplier is appeared to be less effective to leading pile. The lateral resistance of single-layer showed approximately 4-20% larger than the multi-layers.

  • The main purpose of this the sutdy is to develop the reinforced earth structure design method considering induced stresses and deflections resulting from placement and compaction of soil. In this paper, the new reinforcement Geolog developed by the author is also introduced which is being used as one of the effective earth reinforcing structure against compaction induced stresses. This study adopted the Seed's bilinear model in the estimation of the com paction induced stresses and compute the peak lateral stresses during compaction by doubled Boussinessq's elastic solution of mirror image theory, thereafter, calculate the residual compaction induced lateral stresses from the above peak lateral stress by the residual fraction. It is considered to be reasonable that the compaction induced stresses be added to the lateral earth pressures estimated from conventional gravity analysis considering the actual stresses during service life of the structures. "GEOLOG", a composite of steel bar and attached concrete stopper is found to be effective against tension and pull - out failure. In this paper, the design method considering the compaction induced stresses and the effect of Geolog reinforcement is suggested for the remforced earth structures where backkfill settlement on displacements are not allowed as in the cases of the bridge abutments or double faced reinforcement earth structures.tructures.

  • Flipped learning can be used as an innovative teaching method in science education. This study analyzes video clip produced by pre-service elementary school teachers for flipped learning and explore strategies to organize effective visualization. The pre-service elementary school teachers focused on providing information on macroscopic natural phenomenon using concrete case selection strategy for earth science class. They used marker and spatial transformation elements effectively, but their efforts to link the elements to the experience of students were not sufficient. In addition, it was very rare to put the contents into simplified drawing or provide extreme cases to enhance the imagery of students. In addition, it is necessary to provide specific case of multi-modal and link the material to the experience of students closely through familiar cases or analogical model to establish an effective visual teaching material. It may also be needed to present simplified drawing for enhancing imagery and provide extreme cases to make students have an opportunity to infer a new situation.

  • Eight RC bridge plers have been made on a 1/3.4 scale model and have been tested in a quasi-static cyclic load so as to investigate their seismic performance. The ultimate objective of this experimental study is to investigate the hysteretic behavior of reinforced concrete plers, which have been widely used for urban transportation facilities in Korea. Improtant test parameters are hoop ratio, axial load, load pattern, and etc. And noninear behaviors of test columns have been evaluated through their yield and ultimate strength, energy dissipation, ductility and load-deflection characteristics under quasi-static cyclic loads. From the quasi-static tests on 8 bridge piers, it is concluded that energy dissipation, ultimate strength and curvature for a given displacement factor ${\mu}={\Delta}/{\Delta}_y$ are higher for the seismically designed columns than for the nonseismically designed columns.

  • The seismic over-strength factor Ω is evaluated for 4-story reinforced concrete buildings in Korea, which has low seismic intensity. For this study, the seismic load suggested in' Aseismic guideline research- phase ll' (in Korea) is used. When 3D study-models are designed, span length and bay number are varied and accidental torsional moment is considered. And the models are analyzed by push-over analysis, in which external and internal frame are connected by rigid-link. As a result of numerical experiments, Ω is increased as the bay number or span length is increased. Because, by the including of accidental torsional moment in designing process, the increased ratio of strength of external columns is larger than the increased ratio of span length or bay number. And this makes the failure mode of model closer or strong-column and weak-beam mechanism.

  • A design optimization problem was formulated to minimize the volume of an RC building structure while satisfying design constraints on structural displacements under vertical, wind and seismic loads. We employed metamodel-based design optimization using design of experiments, metamodeling and optimization algorithm to circumvent the difficulty of the automation of structural analysis procedure. Especially, we proposed a design approach of repetitive design optimizations by stages with changing the side constraint values on design variables and limit values on design constraints until a satisfactory design result was obtained. Using the proposed design approach, the volume of the RC building structure has been reduced by 53.3 % compared to the initial one while satisfying all the design constraints. This design result clearly shows the validity of the proposed design approach.

  • In this paper the seismic performance of a flat plate wall system structure was evaluated based on the ATC-63 approach, and the results were compared with those of a wall slab structure having the same size. As analysis model structures, a twelve story flat plate wall structure and a wall slab structure were designed based on the KBC-2009, and their seismic performances and collapse behaviors were evaluated by nonlinear static and incremental dynamic analyses(IDA). It was observed that the flat plate wall structure was designed with smaller amount of reinforced concrete, and showed slightly larger displacement response compared with those of the wall slab structure. The collapse margin ratios of the two structures obtained from the incremental dynamic analyses satisfied the limit states specified in the ATC-63, and the structures turned out to have enough capacity to resist the design level seismic load.

  • This study was done to find a way to resolve a problem in a periodical situation. Recently, the youth unemployment problem became a major factor in social issues. Regarding this issue and employment with high involvement, a new employee's OJT fee acts as a burden. This research will focus on concrete solutions needed to resolve this problem. In terms of content for research, we will firstly analyze representative institutions(NCS) which is responsible for qualifications needed to collect information required to extract major license that carry an easy access to business matters. With a base on this, we will use AHP analysis technique and proposal of research format and extract major license that carry an easy access to business matters. This is considered to be a significant regulation for reducing OJT fee and selecting licenses necessary for getting a job; therefore, the objective of this research is providing a basic structure for sorting licenses with easy access to business matters out and proving grounds for decision in acquiring certifications.

  • An analytical model is presented to predict the static behavior of the long-span prestressed concrete bridge deck(the long-span PSC deck). The finite element analysis is performed and the results are compared with that of the previous experimental test. The load-deflection relationship curves by FEM are in good agreement with the results reported in the previous study. The failure mode of all test specimens is predicted by the punching shear in this study. It is also observed in the previous experimental test. The main objective of this paper is presenting supportive method to predict static behavior of the long-span PSC deck slab. It is not simulating the punching shear behavior graphically.
