Silica fume is a by-product of induction arc furnaces and has long been used as a mineral admixture to produce high-strength, high-performance concrete. Due to the pozzolanic reaction between calcium hydroxide and silica fume, compared with that of Portland cement, the hydration of concrete containing silica fume is much more complex. In this paper, by considering the production of calcium hydroxide in cement hydration and its consumption in the pozzolanic reaction, a numerical model is proposed to simulate the hydration of concrete containing silica fume. The heat evolution rate of silica fume concrete is determined from the contribution of cement hydration and the pozzolanic reaction. Furthermore, the temperature distribution and temperature history in hardening blended concrete are evaluated based on the degree of hydration of the cement and the mineral admixtures. The proposed model is verified through experimental data on concrete with different water-to-cement ratios and mineral admixture substitution ratios.

In recent years, the prediction of the deterioration rate of concrete structures has become major research interest. However, there are still many uncertain factors in the deterioration process and the relation between deterioration and durability of structures. This is mainly due to various uncertainties involved in the construction process and the environmental conditions which affect the rate of deterioration of concrete structures. In this study a limit state model in terms of random crack width due to applied dead and live loads is proposed for the assessment of crack damage of reinforced concrete structures. The AFOSM reliability method is used for the reliability evaluation of the crack durability of concrete bridges. The proposed model for crack durability of concrete bridges is applied to the Seoul interior circuit elevated expressway. The sensitivity analyses are performed for the proposed model.
This paper deals with the behavior of fresh concrete that is under vibration using mass-spring model (MSM). To this end, behaviors of two different full scale precast concrete molds were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Experiments were performed under vibration with the use of a computer-based data acquisition system. Transducers were used to measure time-dependent lateral displacements at some points on mold while mold is empty and full of fresh concrete. Analytical modeling of molds used in experiments were prepared by three dimensional finite element method (3D FEM) using software. Modeling of full mold, using MSM, was made to solve the problem of dynamic interaction between fresh concrete and mold. Numerical displacement histories obtained from time history analysis were compared with experimental results. The comparisons show that the measured and computed results are compatible.
Climate changes, such as increasing of $CO_2$ concentration and global warming, will impact on the carbonation service life of concrete structures. Moreover, slag blended concrete has a lower carbonation resistance than control concrete. This study presents a probabilistic numerical procedure for evaluating the impact of climate change on carbonation service life of slag blended concrete. This numerical procedure considers both corrosion initiation period and corrosion propagation period. First, in corrosion initiation period, by using an integrated hydration-carbonation model, the amount of carbonatable substances, porosity, and carbonation depth are calculated. The probability of corrosion initiation is determined through Monte Carlo method. Second, in corrosion propagation period, a probabilistic model is proposed to calculate the critical corrosion degree at surface cracking, the probability of surface cracking, and service life. Third, based on the service life in corrosion initiation period and corrosion propagation period, the whole service life is calculated. The analysis shows that for concrete structures with 50 years service life, after considering climate changes, the service life reduces about 7%.

Concrete behaves as ductile material at high temperature. The existing stress-strain relationship is not valid at high temperature condition. Thus, stress-strain curve of concrete at high temperature is re-established by modifying Saenz's suggestion in this study. A constitutive model of concrete subjected to elevated temperature is also suggested. The model consists of three components; free thermal stain, mechanical strain and thermal creep strain. As the temperature increase, the thermal creep becomes more critical to the failure of concrete. The thermal creep strain of concrete is derived from the modified power-law relation for the steady state creep. The proposed equation for thermal creep employs a Dorn's temperature compensated time theorem
A novel approach to modeling concrete behavior at the stage of its maturing is presented in this paper. This approach assumes that at any point in the structure, concrete is composed of a set of layers that are activated in time layer by layer, based on amount of released heat that is produced during process of the concrete's maturing. This allows one to assume that each newly created layer has nominal stiffness moduli and tensile/compressive strengths. Hence introduction of explicit stiffness moduli and tensile/compressive strength dependencies on time, or equivalent time state parameter, is not needed. Analysis of plain concrete (PC) and reinforced concrete (RC) structures, especially massive ones, subjected to any kind of straining in their early stage of existence, mostly due to external loads but especially by thermal loading and shrinkage, is the goal of the approach. In this article a simple elasto-plastic softening model with creep is used for each layer and a general layered model behavior is illustrated on one-dimensional (1D) examples.
In general, RC columns are reinforced by spiral or tied steel and a strength of confined concrete is more increased than this of unconfined concrete. And strength and ductility of column are increased by a confinement effect. A confinement effect is affected by concrete strength, spacing, volume and strength of confinement steel. Many researchers suggested various confinement models which reflected these parameters by many experimental results. In this study, a load-strain relationship is evaluated by a confinement model in EC2, and it is compared with Mander model, Saatchioglu-Razvi model and Cusson et al. model. As results, it is appeared that a confinement model in EC2 is able to apply all kinds of concrete strength and a consistency in sectional analysis can be secured using material models in EC2. In parameter studies using material models in EC2, a confinement effect is more affected by a confinement steel than a concrete strength.
In this paper, the mechanical property of CFRP, BFRP, GFRP and their hybrid FRP was experimentally studied. The elastic modulus and tensile strength of CFRP, BFRP, GFRP and their hybrid FRP were tested. The experimental results showed that the elastic modulus of hybrid FRP agreed well with the theoretical rule of mixture, which means the property of hybrid composites are linear with the volumes of the corresponding components while the tensile strength did not. The bearing capacity, peak strain, stress-strain relationship of circular concrete columns confined by CFRP, BFRP, GFRP and hybrid FRP subjected to axial compression were recorded. And the confinement effect of hybrid FRP on concrete columns was analyzed. The test results showed that the bearing capacity and ductility of concrete columns were efficiently improved through hybrid FRP confinement. A strength model and a stress-strain relationship model of hybrid FRP confined concrete columns were proposed. The proposed stress-strain model was shown to be capable of providing accurate prediction of the axial compressive strength of hybrid FRP confined concrete compared with Teng et al. (2002) model, Karbhari and Gao (1997) model and Miyachi et al. (1999) model. The modified stress-strain model was also suitable for single FRP confinement cases and it was so concise in form and didn't have piecewise fitting, which would be easy for use in structural design.

The post-fire elastic stiffness and performance of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns containing recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) has rarely been addressed, particularly in terms of material properties. This study was conducted with the aim of assessing the modulus of elasticity of recycled aggregate concrete-filled steel tube (RACFST) stub columns following thermal loading. The test data were employed to model and assess the elastic modulus of circular RACFST stub columns subjected to axial loading after exposure to elevated temperatures. The length/diameter ratio of the specimens was less than three to prevent the sensitivity of overall buckling for the stub columns. The gene expression programming (GEP) method was employed for the model development. The GEP model was derived based on a comprehensive experimental database of heated and non-heated RACFST stub columns that have been properly gathered from the open literature. In this study, by using specifications of 149 specimens, the variables were the steel section ratio, applied temperature, yielding strength of steel, compressive strength of plain concrete, and elastic modulus of steel tube and concrete core (RAC). Moreover, parametric and sensitivity analyses were also performed to determine the contribution of different effective parameters to the post-fire elastic modulus. Additionally, comparisons and verification of the effectiveness of the proposed model were made between the values obtained from the GEP model and the formulas proposed by different researchers. Through the analyses and comparisons of the developed model against formulas available in the literature, the acceptable accuracy of the model for predicting the post-fire modulus of elasticity of circular RACFST stub columns was seen.

Fracture Mechanics does work for concrete, provided that a finite nonlinear zone at fracture front is being considered. The development of model for fracture process zone is most important to describe fracture phenomena in concrete. The fracture process zone is a region ahead of a traction-free crack, in which two major mechanisms, microcracking and bridging, play important rules. The toughness due to bridging is dominant compared to toughness induced by microcracking, so that the bridging is dominant mechanism governing the fracture process of concrete. In this paper the bridging zone, which is a part of extended macrocrack with stresses transmitted by aggregates in concrete, is model led by a Dugdale-Barenblatt type model with linear tension-softening curve. Two finite element techniques are shown for the model of fracture process zone in concrete.
