This paper is motivated by the lack of studies in the technical literature concerning to the influence of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) waviness and aspect ratio on the vibrational behavior of functionally graded nanocomposite annular sector plates resting on two-parameter elastic foundations. The carbon nanotube-reinforced (CNTR) plate has smooth variation of CNT fraction based on the power-law distribution in the thickness direction, and the material properties are also estimated by the extended rule of mixture. In this study, the classical theory concerning the mechanical efficiency of a matrix embedding finite length fibers has been modified by introducing the tube-to-tube random contact, which explicitly accounts for the progressive reduction of the tubes' effective aspect ratio as the filler content increases. Parametric studies are carried out to highlight the influence of CNTs volume fraction, waviness and aspect ratio, boundary conditions and elastic foundation on vibrational behavior of FG-CNT thick sectorial plates. The study is carried out based on three-dimensional theory of elasticity and in contrary to two-dimensional theories, such as classical, the first- and the higher-order shear deformation plate theories, this approach does not neglect transverse normal deformations. The annular sector plate is assumed to be simply supported in the radial edges while any arbitrary boundary conditions are applied to the other two circular edges including simply supported, clamped and free. For an overall comprehension on 3-D vibration of annular sector plates, some mode shape contour plots are reported in this research work.
In this study, collapse test of thin-walled structure is performed under axially quasi-static and impact load in collapse characteristic to develop the optimum structural member for a light-oriented automobile. Furthermore, the energy-absorbing capacity is observed according to the variety of configuration(circular, square), aspect ratio in aluminum specimen to obtain basic data for the improved member of vehicle. In both quasi-static and impact collapse test, Al circular specimens collapse, in general, with axisymmetric mode in case of thin thickness while collapse with non-axisynmetric mode according to the thickness increase. For Al rectangular specimens, they collapse with axisymmetric mode in case of thin thickness, with mixed collapse mode according to the increase of thickness. In terms of initial max. load, Al square specimen turns out the best member among specimens, and then Al square, circular and circular with large scaling ratio, respectively. In case of quasi-static compression test, the absorbed energy per unit volume and mass shows higher in Al circular specimen, and then Al square, circular with large scaling ratio, respectively, according to shape ratio the absorbed energy per unit volume and mass in case of max. impact compression load is higher than that of static load. But the absorbed energy per unit volume and mass shows that Al circular specimen is the best member. Especially, unlike max. compression loan, the absorbed energy per unit volume and mass in impact test turns out the low value.
The differential equations governing in-plane free vibrations of the elastic, catenary arch with rotatory inertia are derived in Cartesian coordinates. Frequencies and mode shapes are computed numerically for such arches with unsymmetric axes, for both clamped-clamped and hinged-hinged end constraints. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with and without rotatory inertia, as a function of three nondimensional system parameters; the span to cord length ratio e, the slenderness ratio s, and the rise to cord length ratio f. Experimental measures of frequencies and mode shapes for several laboratory-scale catenary models serve to validate the theoretical results.
Recently, the study on the vibration analysis of machinery is greatly important and ESPI is widely used because of its many attractive features. Firstly, ESPI can be used to measure the vibration mode shape and the phase in real-time. Secondly, the conventional measuring methode, such as accelerometers, take much time to measure the whole field of object, but ESPI needs shorter time than other methods. Because ESPI is a field-inspection method. Thirdly, ESPI is a non-contact measuring system. ESPI does not have influence on the specimen. Beyond these features, there are several advantages in ESPI system. In this paper, the Stroboscopic ESPI system is described for measurement of a vibration mode shape. The Stroboscopic ESPI system had been used to visualize the vibration mode shape, in which EO(Electro-Optic)modulator was used to chop CW(Continuous Wavefront)laser. But it was not easy to control EO modulator and quantified the vibration amplitude and the phase of circular metal plate. At first, we found resonant frequency of the specimen by using time-averaged ESPI method. Nextly, the amplitudes of specimen were quantified by using Stroboscopic ESPI and we compare the results which were obtained in several chopping ratio.
This paper deals with the effect of the mode shapes on the dynamic response of a multi-storey frame subjected to moving train loads which are modelled as loads of constant intervals with constant velocity using the finite element method. The multi-storey frame is modelled as a number of Bernoulli-Euler beam elements. First, the first few modes of the multi-storey frame are determined. Then, the effects of force span length to beam length ratio and velocity on dynamic magnification factor (DMF) are evaluated via 3D velocity-force span length to beam length ratio-DMF graphics and its 2D projections. By using 3D and 2D graphics, the directions of critical speeds that force the structure under resonance conditions are determined. Last, the mode shapes related to these directions are determined by the time history and frequency response graphs. This study has been limited by the vibration of the frame in the vertical direction.
The main objective of this study was investigation of combustion instability characteristics in a lean partially premixed gas turbine dump combustor. Dynamic pressure transducers were located on combustor and inlet section to observe combustion pressure oscillation and difference at each measurement places. Also flame shape and $CH^*$ chemiluminescence were measured using a high speed ICCD camera. The combustor length was varied in order to have different acoustic characteristics from 800 to 1090 mm. The first section of this paper shows the stability map in model gas turbine combustor. And the effects of combustor length, mixture velocity in the mixing section and equivalence ratio were studied by the pressure perturbation and heat release oscillation. Also, the instability frequency and mode analysis were studied in last two sections. We observed two dominant instability frequencies in this study. Lower frequencies were obtained at lower equivalence ratio region and it was associated with a fundamental longitudinal mode of combustor length. Higher frequencies were observed in higher equivalence ratio conditions. It was related to secondary longitudinal mode of combustor and mixing section. In this instability characteristics, pressure oscillation of mixing section part was larger than pressure oscillation of combustor. As a result, combustion instability was strongly affected by acoustic characteristics of combustor and mixing section geometry.
In this study, a relationship between the resonance frequency ratio and Poisson's ratio was proposed that can be used to directly determine the elastic constants. Using this relationship, the frequency ratio between the 1st bending mode and 2nd bending mode for any rectangular Timoshenko beam can be directly estimated and used to determine the elastic constants efficiently. The exact solution of the Timoshenko beam vibration frequency equation under free-free boundary conditions was determined with an accurate shear shape factor. The highest percent difference for the frequency ratio between the theoretical values and the estimated values for all the beam dimensions studied was less than 0.02%. The proposed equations were used to obtain the elastic constants of beams with different material properties and dimensions using the first two measured transverse bending frequencies. Results show that using the equations proposed in this study, the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of rectangular Timoshenko beams can be determined more efficiently and accurately than those obtained from industry standards such as ASTM E1876-15 without the need to test the torsional vibration.
The Conventional patterned vertical alignment (PVA) device shows a very high contrast ratio at normal direction and does not require rubbing process. However it has a disclination area in which the liquid crystal can be collision in the boundary domain region. In this paper, we studied PVA(Z-shape) device in which the liquid crystal can be tilted down in multiple directions stably because the surface pretilt angle is controlled by photopolymerization of the UV - curable reactive mesogen (RM) under a proper condition. Consequently, the device shows improved electro optical properties as compared to conventional PVA mode.
A numerical method is presented to obtain natural frequencies and mode shapes of tapered beams with static deflections due to self-weight. The differential equation governing the free vibrations of beam taken into account the static deflection due to self-weight is derived and solved numerically. The hinged-hinged, clamped-clamped and clamped-hinged and clamped-free end constraints are applied in the numerical examples. As the numerical results, the lowest three natural frequencies versus distributed slenderness ratio and section ratio are reported in figures. And for the comparison purpose, the typical mode shapes with the effects of static deflection are presented in figures.
