  • We propose a novel planar optical interconnection scheme for 100 Gb/s optical packet address detection, which consists of waveguide grating couplers and a diffractive microlens integrated on a glass substrate 3-dimensionally. Length and duty cycle of the grating couplers have been determined on the bases of the ray-optic propagation-mode analysis in a slab waveguide and of the rigorous coupled-wave diffraction analysis for out-coupled radiation-modes. The 3-dimensionally integrated planar optics makes it possible to connect each address bit-signals of $TE_ 0-waveguide$ mode to the detector with a power uniformity of 6.4 % and a total coupling efficiency of 72.3 %.

  • This paper describes the FEM analysis for squeak problem of the ceramic-on-ceramic hip joint system. The onset of hip squeak is estimated by the positive real parts of the eigenvalues in the hip joint system. From the complex eigenvalue analysis, the unstable frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes are determined at the certain severe friction coefficients. It is found that some bending and torsion modes of the femoral stem can be unstable due to the mode-coupling mechanism. It also shows that the magnitude of the friction coefficient plays a key role on the occurrence of hip squeak.

  • In this paper, a new hybrid position control algorithm for the direct drive arm is proposed. The proposed control is composed of discrete feedforward component and continuous feedback component. The discrete component is the nominal torque which approximately compensates the strong nonlinear coupling torques between the links, while the continuous control is a modified version of sliding mode control which is known to have a robust property to the disturbances of system. For the proposed control law, we give sufficient condition which guarantees the bounded tracking error in spite of the modeling errors, and the efficiency of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by the numerical simulation of a three link manipulator position control with payloads and parameter errors.

  • The theoretical formulations are derived for calculating optical power change for intensity modulated fiber optical microphone. The optical power change is due to optical paths, misalignment and geometry of optical coupler. Based on the theoretical equations, three different optical couplers are simulated with respect to several angles of optical couplers. In order to evaluate the formulation, a multi-mode to multi-mode coupler which is one of abovementioned optical couplers is designed and characterized by carving out both static experiments and dynamic experiments. Considering experimental results, this paper conclude that the theoretical formulations is very useful for design optical coupler and this kind of fiber optic sensor is adequate to microphone.

  • Change of magnetic properties in CoCrPt/Ti perpendicular media with varying CoCrPt film thickness has been studied. As the CoCrPt film thickness increases from 25 nm, the Ms (saturation magnetization) increases rapidly at first and then more gradually. This Ms behavior is associated primarily with the formation of an "amorphous-like"reacted layer created by intermixing of CoCrPt and Ti at the CoCrPt/Ti interface and secondarily with a change of the Cr segregation mode with varying CoCrPt film thickness. Magnetic domain structure distinctively changes with increasing CsCrPt magnetic layer (ML) thickness. Also the strength of exchange coupling measured from the slope in the demagnetizing region of the M-H loop changes with ML thickness. The expansion of lattice parameters a and c at smaller film thickness suggests that the Cr segregation mode may be connected with the residual stress of the films. Finally, the negative nucleation field (Hn) shows a unique behavior with the change of strength of the exchange interaction.teraction.

  • Optical fiber gratings have been intensively studied for applications in optical fiber communications and sensor systems due to their all-fiber configuration, low insertion loss, low cost, and high flexibility. Especially, cladding mode coupling fiber devices such as long period gratings (LPG) and acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTF) have been developed as a gain equalization filter in erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems$^{(1-2)}$ . • A helical inductively coupled plasma asher, which produces low energy and high density plasma, has been built and investigated for photoresist stripping process. Oxygen ion density in the order of $10^{11}/cm^3$ is measured by Langmuir probe, and higher oxygen radical density is observed by Optical Emission Spectrometer. As RF source power is increased, the plasma density and thus photoresist stripping rate are increased. Independent RF bias power to the wafer stage provides a dc bias to the wafer and an ability to add the ion assisted reaction. At 1 KW of the source power, the coupling mechanism of the RF power to the plasma is changed from the inductive mode to the capacitive one at about 1 Torr. This change causes the plasma density and ashing rate decreases abruptly. The critical pressure of the mode change becomes larger with larger RF power.

  • Dynamic analysis of complex and large structures may be costly from a numerical point of view. For coupled vibroacoustic finite element models, the importance of reducing the size becomes obvious because the fluid degrees of freedom must be added to the structural ones. In this paper, a component mode synthesis method is proposed for large vibroacoustic interaction problems. This method couples fluid subdomains and dynamical substructuring of Craig and Bampton type. The acoustic formulation is written in terms of the velocity potential, which implies several advantages: coupled algebraic systems remain symmetric, and a potential formulation allows a direct extension of Craig and Bampton's method to acoustics. Those properties make the proposed method easy to implement in an existing finite element code because the local numerical treatment of substructures and fluid subdomains is undifferentiated. Test cases are then presented for axisymmetric geometries. Numerical results tend to prove the validity and the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • In this study, vibration and aeroelastic analyses of a T-tail have been conducted. The structural dynamic computations of the T-tail are performed using MSC/NASTRAN and CFD-based computational aeroelastic analysis method is used to investigate the complex flutter phenomena. The results for vibration and aeroelastic analyses in the frequency and time domains are presented. It is importantly shown that the modal coupling of the torsional mode of vertical-wing and the asymmetric bending mode of horizontal-wing parts can give sensitive effects for the flutter stability of T-tail configurations.

  • We have demonstrated a refractometer for liquid based on a side-polished fiber. The device consists of a side-polished single mode fiber and a rectangular space which plays a role of the multimode planar waveguide when it is infused with a liquid. We presented a simple method to acquire the refractive index of a liquid by use of the spacings of periodic resonance wavelengths of the device. The resolution of the fabricated refractometer was order of $10^{-5}$
