A technique is presented that uses a circular waveguide for the measurement of the bulk shear(S-wave) velocities of unconsolidated, saturated media, with particular application to near surface soils. The technique requires the measurement of the attenuation characteristics of the fumdamental T(0,1) mode that propagates along an embedded pipe, from which the acoustic properties of the surrounding medium are inferred. From the dispersion curve analysis, the feasibility of using T(0,1) mode which is non-dispersive and have constant attenuation over all frequency range is discussed. The principles behind the technique are discussed and the results of an experimental laboratory validation are presented. The experimental data are best fitted for the different depths of wetted sand and the shear velocities as a function of depths are formulated using power law curves.
An in-line variable attenuator has been proposed and demonstrated exploiting a side-polished single-mode (SM) fiber evanescently coupled with an index matched dielectric plate. The attenuation can be controlled by fine mechanical sliding of the index matched dielectric plate. We have achieved 49 ㏈ dynamic range and very low excess loss of 0.2 ㏈ at 1550 nm wavelength. The measured polarization dependent losses (PDL) were 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 ㏈ at 10, 20, and 30 ㏈ attenuation, respectively. Wavelength sensitivity was measured to be -0.017/nm ㏈ at 20 ㏈ attenuation.
A technique is presented that uses a circular waveguide for the measurement of the bulk shear (S-wave) velocities of unconsolidated, saturated media, with particular application to near surface soils. The technique requires the measurement of the attenuation characteristics of the fundamental torsional mode that propagate along an embedded pipe, from which the acoustic properties of the surrounding medium are inferred. From the dispersion curve analysis, the feasibility of using fundamental torsional mode which is non-dispersive and have constant attenuation over all frequency range is discussed. The principles behind the technique are discussed and the results of an experimental laboratory validation are presented. The experimental data are best fitted for the different depths of wetted sand and the shear velocities are evaluated as a function of depths. Also the characteristics of the reflected signal from the defects are examined and the reflection coefficients are calculated for identifying the relation between defect sizes and the magnitude of the reflected signal.
A practical and effective semi-active on-off control law is developed for vibration attenuation of a natural, multi-degree-of-freedom suspension system, when its operational response mode is available. It does not need the accurate system parameters and dynamics of semi-active actuator. It reduces the total vibratory energy of the system including the work done by external disturbances and the maximum energy dissipation direction of the semi-active control device is tuned to the operational response mode of the structure. The effectiveness of the control law is illustrated with a three degree-of-freedom excavator cabin model.

We propose a simple in-line variable optical attenuator (VOA) based on the bending effect of tapered single mode fibers. The influence of the taper structure and the reflective index of the external medium surrounding the taper region on the bending loss of the tapered fiber have been investigated experimentally. An attenuation range exceeding 35 dB and a very low excess loss of < 0.2 dB at 1550 nm were achieved. The measured polarization dependent loss of the present VOA at the attenuation level of 10 dB, 20 dB, and 30 dB were 0.1 dB, 0.2 dB, and 0.5 dB, respectively.
A method for suppressing unwanted resonance modes by attaching an electromagnetic wave absorber onto a metal case was studied to prevent performance deterioration of electronic devices. The electromagnetic wave absorber fabricated for this study had an attenuation characteristics above 20dB in the frequency band from 450MHz, 1150MHz. A rectangular cavity resonator whose resonance frequencies of TE$_{101}$, TE$_{102}$ modes were 900MHz, 1250MHz, respectively, was made to measure attenuation for the electromagnetic wave absorber-metal assembly. The result showed that the resonance mode for high attenuation was sensitive to the location of electromagnetic wave absorber, and the attenuation characteristics above 20dB could be obtained when electromagnetic wave absorber was properly positioned.
In situ particle size spectra are obtained from two sequent cruises in order to evaluate the physical consequences of suspended particulate matters caused by episodic storm runoff from the Santa Ana River watershed, an urbanized coastal watershed. Suspended particles from various sources including surface runoff, near-bed resuspension, and phytoplankton are identified in empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis and an entropy-based parameterization (Shannon entropy). The first EOF mode is associated with high turbidity and fine particles as indicated by the elevated beam attenuation near the Santa Ana River and Newport Bay outlets, and the second EOF mode explains the suspended sediment dispersal and particle coarsening at the near-surface plume. Chlorophyll particles are also distinguished by negative magnitudes of the first EOF mode, which is supported by the relationship between fluorescence and beam attenuation. The integrated observation between the first EOF mode and the Shannon entropy index accentuates the characteristics of two different structures and/or sources of sediment particles; the near-surface plumes are originated from runoff water outflow, while the near-bottom particles are resuspended due to increased wave heights or mobilizing bottom turbidity currents. In a coastal pollution context, these methods may offer useful means of characterizing particle-associated pollutants for purposes of source tracking and environmental interpretation.
This paper presents the intra capacitance modeling based on the winding method and section bobbin for CM choke capable of EMI attenuation of broad bands from lower to higher frequency bands and high frequency type common-mode choke capable of EMI attenuation of high frequency band used in the EMI Block of LED-TV SMPS. The case of high frequency type CM choke can be explained by the parasitic capacitance of three types of CM choke. The winding method of section bobbin type is smaller than the others. The first resonant frequency of the proposed CM choke tends to increase as the parasitic capacitance becomes small and its impedance characteristics improved performance as the first resonant frequency increases. The CM chokes of the proposed section bobbin type shows that in the future, the method may have practical use in LED/LCD-TV SMPS and in several applications, such as LED lighting, adapters, and so on.
