Modal parameters are the main dynamic characteristics of bridge. This study aims to propose an innovative route to estimate the modal parameters for bridges by using a parked vehicle in which mode shapes with high accuracy and spatial resolution are identified by frequency measurement. Based on the theory of dynamic modification and modal identification, the mathematical formulation between the parked mass induced frequency variation and the modal parameters of a bridge is derived. Then this mathematical formulation is extended to a parked vehicle-bridge system. The arithmetic and processes for estimating the modal parameters based on the identified frequency variation of the vehicle-bridge systems when the vehicle locates at sequentially arranged positions are presented. Finally the proposed method is applied to several simulated bridges of different types. The results indicate that it can estimate the modal parameters with high accuracy and efficiency.
Identifying structural modal parameters, especially those modes within high frequency range, from ambient data is still a challenging problem due to various kinds of uncertainty involved in vibration measurements. A procedure applying an ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method is proposed for accurate and robust structural modal identification. In the proposed method, the EEMD process is first implemented to decompose the original ambient data to a set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), which are zero-mean time series with energy in narrow frequency bands. Subsequently, a Sub-PolyMAX method is performed in narrow frequency bands by using IMFs as primary data for structural modal identification. The merit of the proposed method is that it performs structural identification in narrow frequency bands (take IMFs as primary data), unlike the traditional method in the whole frequency space (take original measurements as primary data), thus it produces more accurate identification results. A numerical example and a multiple-span continuous steel bridge have been investigated to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Recently, a new output-only modal identification method based on time-frequency independent component analysis (ICA) has been developed by the authors and shown to be useful for even highly-damped structures. In many cases, it is of interest to identify the complex modes of structures with non-proportional damping. This study extends the time-frequency ICA based method to a complex ICA formulation for output-only modal identification of non-proportionally-damped structures. The connection is established between complex ICA model and the complex-valued modal expansion with sparse time-frequency representation, thereby blindly separating the measured structural responses into the complex mode matrix and complex-valued modal responses. Numerical simulation on a non-proportionally-damped system, laboratory experiment on a highly-damped three-story frame, and a real-world highly-damped base-isolated structure identification example demonstrate the capability of the time-frequency complex ICA method for identification of structures with complex modes in a straightforward and efficient manner.

The normal coordinates of a nonclassically damped systems are coupled by nonzero off-diagonal elements of modal damping matrix. The relationship between modal coupling and the frequency separation of the natural modes is presented in this paper. Contrary to widely accepted beliefs, increasing the frequency separation of the natural modes does not neccessarily diminish the effect of modal coupling. Consequently, in the pratical engineering applications, wide frequency separation of the natural modes would not be sufficient for neglecting modal coupling.

Modal testing and analysis is a primary tool for obtaining reliable models to represent the dynamics of structures. When a structure is tested in order to collect measured data in modal testing, we usually use attached accelerometers to pick up the response data. Change in modal parameters due to the mass of transducers in modal testing is a well-known problem. The disadvantages are the shift of measured modal frequencies and the change of modal shapes, which can cause inaccurate results in further analysis. Modal analysis methods in frequency domain are based on a set of measured frequency response functions(FRF).(omitted)
Investigation of structural integrity has been a critical issue in the field of civil engineering for years. Visual inspection is one of the most available methods to explore deteriorative components in structures. Still, this method is not applicable to invisible damage of structures. Alternatively, system identification methods are capable of tracking modal properties of structures over time. The deviation of these dynamic properties can serve as indicators to access structural integrity. In this study, a modal tracking technique using frequency-domain system identification from seismic responses of structures is proposed. The method first segments the measured signals into overlapped sequential portions and then establishes multiple Hankel matrices. Each Hankel matrix is then converted to the frequency domain, and a temporal-average frequency-domain Hankel matrix can be calculated. This study also proposes the frequency band selection that can divide the frequency-domain Hankel matrix into several portions in accordance with referenced natural frequencies. Once these referenced natural frequencies are unavailable, the first few right singular vectors by the singular value decomposition can offer these references. Finally, the frequency-domain stochastic subspace identification tracks the natural frequencies and mode shapes of structures through quick stabilization diagrams. To evaluate performance of the proposed method, a numerical study is carried out. Moreover, the long-term monitoring strong motion records at a specific site are exploited to assess the tracking performance. As seen in results, the proposed method is capable of tracking modal properties through seismic responses of structures.
Operational modal analysis is being widely used in aerospace, mechanical and civil engineering. Common research fields include optimal design and rehabilitation under dynamic loads, structural health monitoring, modification and control of dynamic response and analytical model updating. In many practical cases, influence of noise contamination in the recorded data makes it difficult to identify the modal parameters accurately. In this paper, an improved frequency domain method called Enhanced Least Square Complex Frequency (eLSCF) is developed to extract modal parameters from noisy recorded data. The proposed method makes the use of pre-defined approximate mode shape vectors to refine the cross-power spectral density matrix and extract fundamental frequency for the mode of interest. The efficiency of the proposed method is illustrated using an example five story shear frame loaded by random excitation and different noise signals.

In this paper, an improved GA-based damage detection algorithm using a set of combined modal features is proposed. Firstly, a new GA-based damage detection algorithm is formulated for beam-type structures. A schematic of the GA-based damage detection algorithm is designed and objective functions using several modal features are selected for the algorithm. Secondly, experimental modal tests are performed on free-free beams. Modal features such as natural frequency, mode shape, and modal strain energy are experimentally measured before and after damage in the test beams. Finally, damage detection exercises are performed on the test beam to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method. Experimental results show that the damage detection is the most accurate when frequency changes combined with modal strain-energy changes are used as the modal features for the proposed method.
This paper presents numerical and experimental results of modal parameter identification in a generator stator frame for 500 MW fossil power plants. A commercial finite element analysis S/W was employed for modal analysis. The generator is excited by alternating electromagnetic forces, mainly of 120 Hz in 60 Hz machines, due to magnetic field and electric current in windings. It is necessary to verify that the stator frame has adequate frequency margin from the excitation frequency to avoid possible resonance when operating. Thus, frequency margin required for the stator frame is established using the numerical and experimental results. The results show that the stator frame meets the frequency-margin requirements. Also, results of modal analysis for design modification in order to reduce weights of the stator frame without deteriorating vibration characteristics are presented.

The objective of this study is to improve the accuracy of damage detection using natural frequency and modal strain energy. The following approaches are used to achieve the goal. First, modal strain energy is introduced and newly GA-based damage detection technique using natural frequency and modal strain energy is proposed. Next, to verify efficiency of the proposed technique, damage scenarios for free-free beams are designed and the vibration modal tests as damage cases are conducted. Finally, feasibility of proposed technique is verified in comparison with a GA-based damage detection technique using natural frequency and mode shape.
