When an electric (or a magnetic) line source is located near the surface, surface wave type field is generated and the energy associated with this field is guided very close to the impedance surface. In this paper, field strength is calculated by the exact modal and ray methods for a line source excited parallel plate waveguide. The surface wave contribution to the modal and ray solutions is anticipated very strong and must be included in both solutions.

In the course of seismic probabilistic risk assessment(SPRA), seismic fragility analysis(SFA) is utilized as a tool to evaluate the actual seismic capacity of structures. This paper introduces a methodology of SFA and its evaluation procedures, especially focusing on the basic fragility variables. A new definition of the response spectrum shape factor as one of the most critical basic variables is suggested. The new factor is expressed as a term of linear algebraic sum using the modal contribution factor. The efficiency of new response spectrum shape factor is evaluated and validated to use in practice through the case study of the nuclear power plant structures. The case study results show that the proposed method can be effectively applicable to multi-mode structures with composite modal damping.

Modal participation factor (MPF) is a widely used in a mode-coupling squeal noise problem for finding the most sensitive component over a complex brake system in a vehicle using eigenvectors of sub-components. This methodology requires the problematic total response of system by the unstable squeal noise at a specific frequency as well as eigenvectors of each component belonging to brake system. In this paper, a unit-force response analysis is performed for intact total system to obtain eigenvectors of each component and then such data is directly used for the contribution analysis of a squeal noise problem. Since the eigenvectors of each component induced from virtual unit-excitation is most reliable owing to the intact boundary condition, it can be expected that the corresponding contribution analysis with MPF also provides a trustworthy result.

In this paper, a decoupled proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control approach for seismic control of smart structures is presented. First, the state space equation of a structure is transformed into modal coordinates and parameters of the modal PID control are separately designed in a reduced modal space. Then, the feedback gain matrix of the controller is obtained based on the contribution of modal responses to the structural responses. The performance of the controller is investigated to adjust control force of piezoelectric friction dampers (PFDs) in a benchmark base isolated building. In order to tune the modal feedback gain of the controller, a suitable trade-off among the conflicting objectives, i.e., the reduction of maximum modal base displacement and the maximum modal floor acceleration of the smart base isolated structure, as well as the maximum modal control force, is created using a multi-objective cuckoo search (MOCS) algorithm. In terms of reduction of maximum base displacement and story acceleration, numerical simulations show that the proposed method performs better than other reported controllers in the literature. Moreover, simulation results show that the PFDs are able to efficiently dissipate the input excitation energy and reduce the damage energy of the structure. Overall, the proposed control strategy provides a simple strategy to tune the control forces and reduces the number of sensors of the control system to the number of controlled stories.

For a panel contribution of the passenger vehicle compartment, a model was created for acoustic analysis of the passenger vehicle compartment and through the acoustic normal modal analysis, frequencies and mode shapes of the resonance modes were calculated. Also, the contribution analysis of each panel was executed using acoustic reciprocal theorem, and through this analysis, normalized responses at the particular point indicate the relative contribution of each panel for generating noise and vibration

Background and Objectives : Training of breath support and laryngeal muscles control are important components in the development of the singing voice. The purpose of this study is to compare characteristics of respiratory and phonatory control on pitch, loudness, register change with untrained males and trained male singers. Materials and Methods : The 11 untrained males and 11 trained male singers participated. Closed Quotient(CQ), fundamental frequency (fo) and relative volume contribution of the rib cage (in percentage rib cage, % RC) and relative volume contribution of abdomen (in percentage abdomen, % AB) were measured during various pitch, loudness, register tasks using /a/ vowel phonation : Legato, staccato with C3-D3-E3-F3-G3 notes and crescendo and decrescendo with C3 note as well as modal register with C3 and falsetto register with C4 note using an integrated analysis system of Respiration, EGG and Voice. Results : (1) When pitch increased with legato task, loudness also increased in untrained male group but maintained in trained male singers. CQ was also increased both untrained and trained male singers but it was not significantly different ($p>.05$). The abdomen contribution to lung volume were significantly predominant both in inhalation and exhalation in trained males singers ($p<.05$). (2) When pitch increased with staccato task, CQ was not significantly different in untrained but significantly different in trained male singers. The respiratory function of male singers were characterized by significantly predominant abdomen contribution to lung volume in exhalation except for inhalation ($p<.05$) (3) When loudness increased with crescendo, fo was significantly increased with increasing CQ in untrained males but fo was relatively consistent with increasing CQ in trained male singers. The respiratory function of male singers were characterized by significantly predominant abdomen contribution to lung volume in exhalation except for inhalation ($p<.05$). (4) Most male singers were able to change register from modal to falsetto register, but untrained males were not. Thus, CQ was significantly different between modal and falsetto register in trained male singers ($p<.05$). The respiratory function of male singers were characterized by significantly predominant abdomen contribution to lung volume in exhalation except for inhalation ($p<.05$). Conclusion : Male singers were superior to untrained males in coordination of respiratory and phonatory control on pitch, loudness, register change. Implication are offered regarding how the results might be applied to the voice therapy as well as singing training.

The aims of this study was to estimate transfer force delivered to cone crusher housing and contribution of force transmission. The rock crushing condition caused vibrations in the cone crusher housing, which were experimentally measured, and frequency response functions (FRF) were also found through modal impact tests. Vibration data and frequency response functions were applied to the transfer path analysis (TPA) model. Next, transfer forces delivered to the cone crusher housing were quantified via the TPA method. Contribution of force transfer was also analyzed based on force estimation results. Finally, this study describes basic concepts and components of the TPA method and reviews its applicability to rotating machinery that experiences impact vibrations and forces.
Damage detection methods using structural dynamic responses have received much attention in the past decades. For bridge and offshore structures, these methods are usually based on beam models. To ensure the successful application of these methods, it is necessary to examine the sensitivity of modal properties to structural damages. To this end, an analytic solution is presented of the modal properties of simply-supported Euler-Bernoulli beams that contain a general damage with no additional assumptions. The damage can be a reduction in the bending stiffness or a loss of mass within a beam segment. This solution enables us to thoroughly discuss the sensitivities of different modal properties to various damages. It is observed that the lower natural frequencies and mode shapes do not change so much when a section of the beam is damaged, while the mode of rotation angle and curvature modes show abrupt change near the damaged region. Although similar observations have been reported previously, the analytical solution presented herein for clarifying the mechanism involved is considered a contribution to the literature. It is helpful for developing new damage detection methods for structures of the beam type.
The recent research on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) has revealed the linkage between proper orthogonal modes and linear normal modes. This paper presents an investigation into the modal identifiability of an instrumented cable-stayed bridge using an adapted POD technique with a band-pass filtering scheme. The band-pass POD method is applied to the datasets available for this benchmark study, aiming to identify the vibration modes of the bridge and find out the so-called deficient modes which are unidentifiable under normal excitation conditions. It turns out that the second mode of the bridge cannot be stably identified under weak wind conditions and is therefore regarded as a deficient mode. To judge if the deficient mode is due to its low contribution to the structural response under weak wind conditions, modal coordinates are derived for different modes by the band-pass POD technique and an energy participation factor is defined to evaluate the energy participation of each vibration mode under different wind excitation conditions. From the non-blind datasets, it is found that the vibration modes can be reliably identified only when the energy participation factor exceeds a certain threshold value. With the identified threshold value, modal identifiability in use of the blind datasets from the same structure is examined.

This study presents the evaluation process for door module. Its objective evades the resonance generated at module plate due to the operation of window regulator motor. For this study, the design improvement process is composed of experimental methods having three steps. First step is modal analysis at door assembly status for acquisition of dynamic characteristics which are modal frequency and damping. Second step is a vibration experiment to get the test mode considered an efficiency of window regulator motor. Last step is a vibration measurement by the form of $6{\times}6$ array on module plate. A vibration measurement of 6x6 array form can be got to three analysis results which are a transfer path of vibration using cross correlation function, a vibration map using OA level and a contribution by frequency band using coherent output power spectrum on module plate. These results are applied to SDM(structural dynamic modification) for design improvement to get around the resonance on module plate by the excitation of window regulator motor.
