  • In these days, mobile application dealing with information contents on mobile or handheld devices such as mobile communicator, PDA or WAP device face the most important industrial needs. The motivation of this study is the design and implementation of mobile application using high resolution satellite imagery, large-sized image data set. Although major advantages of mobile devices are portability and mobility to users, limited system resources such as small-sized memory, slow CPU, low power and small screen size are the main obstacles to developers who should handle a large volume of geo-based 3D model. Related to this, the previous works have been concentrated on GIS-based location awareness services on mobile; however, the mobile 3D terrain model, which aims at this study, with the source data of DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and high resolution satellite imagery is not considered yet, in the other mobile systems. The main functions of 3D graphic processing or pixel pipeline in this prototype are implemented with OpenGL|ES (Embedded System) standard API (Application Programming Interface) released by Khronos group. In the developing stage, experiments to investigate optimal operation environment and good performance are carried out: TIN-based vertex generation with regular elevation data, image tiling, and image-vertex texturing, text processing of Unicode type and ASCII type.

  • With the increasing demand for a better FPD image quality, better evaluation metrics and advanced display quality measurement methods are required to meet these needs. There are many measurement methods for evaluating the viewing angle of various display devices, but these methods, which include luminance drop, color shift, and contrast ratio decrease, are imperfect considering that human perception does not completely correlate to them. In this paper, a new method of measuring the perceptual angle of FPDs is proposed, considering human visual perception, which uses the color space of the color appearance model.

  • In this paper, we propose a hybrid sensor calibration scheme for mobile crowdsensing applications. As the number of newly produced mobile devices containing embedded sensors continues to rise, the potential to use mobile devices as a sensor data source increases. However, because mobile device sensors are generally of a lower performance and cost than dedicated sensors, sensor calibration is crucial. To enable more accurate measurements of natural phenomena through the use of mobile device sensors, we propose a hybrid sensor calibration scheme for such sensors; the scheme makes use of mobile device sensors and existing sensing infrastructure, such as weather stations, to obtain dense data. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme supports low mean square errors. As a practical application of our proposed scheme, we built a temperature map of a city using six mobile phone sensors and six reference sensors. Thanks to the mobility of the sensors and the proposed scheme, our map presents more detailed information than infrastructure-based measurements.

  • This study is aimed to introduce the newly developed mobile application for effective provision of assistive devices for people with disabilities in South Korea. By combining of ICF code and ISO 9999 code, more effective way of searching user fit assistive device information and selecting appropriate assistive devices were possible. 10 people with visual impairment were recruited for an usability testing. For the data analysis, paired t-test were used and confidence interval was 95%. The result showed newly developed mobile application was more effective in comparison with on-line based assistive device information. The outcome of this study will enhance the provision of assistive devices for people with disabilities more effectively within better user understanding of their needs and compensate for their body function as well as environmental barriers.

  • Mobile devices with Android OS and iOS have been emerged as mobile computing devices where various software applications are deployed. Furthermore, they are anticipated to be used not only for traditional personal computing but also for enterprise computing. However, such mobile devices have their intrinsic characteristics such as limited resources and flexible network capabilities, which are not revealed in traditional computers. Hence, there is high demand for methods to develop mobile applications with reflecting their intrinsic characteristics. Since those characteristics belong to non-functional requirements, they should be reflected in architecture design while designing mobile applications. To design architecture, the architecture drivers that are architecture non-functional requirements are decided from mobile application characteristics. Conventional architecture design methods do not consider those characteristics so that the methods cannot be straightforwardly applied to mobile applications. In this paper, to efficiently develop mobile applications reflecting those characteristics, we propose a set of architecture patterns and define a guideline to apply those patterns. First, we define the characteristics of mobile applications distinguished and derive architectural drivers from them. Then, we propose architecture patterns in terms of static and dynamic views and define an architectural guideline to apply the patterns to designing architecture for mobile application. And, we perform case studies to verify the applicability of proposed patterns. Finally, we assess the proposed architecture patterns by proving how the patterns can fulfill identified architecture drivers and by comparing our approach with previous works.

  • As the number of cell phone users become growing, some researchers have presented that the imprudent use of mobile phones exerts harmful influence on electronic devices such as medical appliances, takeoff and landing system of aircraft. In this paper, we propose a usage model based on context-awareness which can be applied to mobile devices. The model controls the usage of both mobile devices themselves and mobile contents according to some context information like location, time, the circumference noise, etc. The proposed usage control model includes a dynamic role-based access control approach. To show the effectiveness of the proposed model, we have implemented a prototype system on an embedded board and PC server, and evaluated the performance of the system.

  • Recently, mobile computing devices are used popularly. And quantity of information on mobile computing devices is being increased due to digitalization of information. So it needs an embedded DBMS for effective information management. Furthermore, since flash memory having a restriction on the number of partial write cycles is rapidly deployed on mobile computing devices as data storage and is more expensive than the conventional magnetic hard disk, the compressed data management system(CDMS) has been considered as an effective storage management technique for mobile computing devices in previous research. However, the research of CDMS is at the initial stage and has several problems. Hence, in this paper, we present additional storage management methods to solve the problems and improve the effectiveness of the CDMS for embedded DBMS.

  • The popularity of the Korean Wave have attracted global interst and attention in Korean and Korean culture internationally, but this has not led to the formation of true Korean learners. The reason for this is that Korean learners based on Korean Wave has different characteristics from other Korean learners. Therefore, it is necessary to study different learning methods in order to increase learning effects. In this study, we focused on the effect of mobile devices as learning tools and examined the characteristics of mobile devices and found that mobile devices could positively influence Korean language learners. As a result, various features of mobile devices can positively affect the learning characteristics of Korean learners based on the Korean Wave, so that it can be expected to enhance their learning effects and enable them to constantly learn Korean language.

  • By using geolocation and maps, we need to trace the path of ourselves, others, or the objects. Until now, we used a native apps development mehod to develop path tracking systems in mobile devices such as smart phones and tablet computers. A disadvantage of this method is that we have to work again to provide the same service on different platforms. Web Apps and Hybrid Apps are developed to recover this disadvantage. Since Hybrid Apps look like Native Apps apparently, users prefer Hybrid Apps to Web Apps. In this paper, we develop a hybrid app which can trace the path on mobile devices. The recently suggested next generation markup language, HTML5, has geolocation features. By using them, we implemented a hybrid app for a path tracking system. First, we create a web app using HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript, Then, PhoneGap, a mobile development framework, is used to convert it to the hybrid app. By implementing hybrid app, various apps which need path tracking can be developed rapidly and effectively, regardless of the mobile devices.
