  • Due to the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), images are often corrupted. In recent days, Bayesian estimation techniques to recover noisy images in the wavelet domain have been studied. The probability density function (PDF) of an image in wavelet domain can be described using highly-sharp head and long-tailed shapes. If a priori probability density function having the above properties would be applied well adaptively, better results could be obtained. There were some frequently proposed PDFs such as Gaussian, Laplace distributions, and so on. These functions model the wavelet coefficients satisfactorily and have its own of characteristics. In this paper, mixture distributions of Gaussian and Laplace distribution are proposed, which attempt to corporate these distributions' merits. Such mixture model will be used to remove the noise in images by adopting Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) estimation method. With respect to visual quality, numerical performance and computational complexity, the proposed technique gained better results.

  • For the improvement of ignitability we need ignition energy and its discharge characteristics which are suitable for a part distribution of the mixture density around the ignition spark plug and the flow characteristics of the mixture in the combustion. Especially, for the solving of the instability of initial ignition and lean ignitability limit in the case of lean-burn combustion, the more powerful ignition energy is required. The conclusions from the observation can be summarized as follows: 1) The ignitability limit for HIS expands wider and the combustion is more stable than for CDI. 2) The combustion duration and ignition timing depend upon the distribution of local mixture density in the vicinity of ignition spark plug.

  • For the Kyungju bentonite which is considered as a candidate material for the buffer and backfill in the high-level waste repository, the thermal conductivities of compacted bentonite and a bentonite-sand mixture were measured. The thermal conductivities of the compacted bentonites with a dry density of 1.2 to $1.8\;Mg/m^3$ and the bentonite-sand mixture with a dry density of 1.6 and $1.8\;Mg/m^3$ were measured within the gravimetric water content range of 10wt% to 20wt% and the sand fraction range of 10 to 30wt%. The thermal conductivity of compacted bentonite and a bentonite-sand mixture increases with increasing dry density and sand weight fraction in the case of constant water weight fraction, and increases with increasing water weight fraction and sand weight fraction in the case of constant dry density. The empirical correlations to describe the thermal conductivity of compacted bentonite and a bentonite-sand mixture as a function of water fraction at each dry density were suggested. These correlations can predict the thermal conductivities of bentonite and a bentonite-sand mixture with a difference below 10%.

  • Densities of molten salt mixtures of eutectic LiCl-KCl with $UCl_3$, $CeCl_3$, or $LaCl_3$ at various concentrations (up to 13 wt%) were measured using a liquid surface displacement probe. Linear relationships between the mixture density and the concentration of the added salt were observed. For $LaCl_3$ and $CeCl_3$, the measured densities were significantly higher than those previously reported from Archimedes' method. In the case of $LiCl-KCl-UCl_3$, the data fit the ideal mixture density model very well. For the other salts, the measured densities exceeded the ideal model prediction by about 2%.

  • We measured the electron drift velocity, W, in 0.5% $SF_{6}$-Ar mixture over the E/N range from 30 Td to 300 Td and gas pressure range from 0.1 to 8 Torr by the double shutter drift tube with a variable drift distance. This coefficient in the mixture was calculated over the same E/N and gas pressure range by using the two-term approximation of the Boltzmann equation. And the measured and calculated values at different gas number density at each E/N was appreciable dependence in the results on the gas number density,

  • The asphalt pavement is usually non-uniform since achieving a non-segregated and homogeneous asphalt mixture is very difficult. The segregation can occur in the mixed material before it is fed onto the road and it become segregated as it is being placed onto the road surface. Note that this segregation determines the performance of the asphalt pavement. Hence, it is necessary to check the segregation by estimating the density of the asphalt pavement in the field. In this paper, a research on estimating the density of the asphalt mixture by measuring the dielectric constant of the material is conducted. An RF transceiver and an antenna are designed and tested to a series of asphalt density samples, and discussions are shown.

  • The effect of fuel mixing on soot structure with methane, ethane, and propane to ethylene-base counterflow diffusion flames has been investigated by measuring the volume fraction, number density, and particle size of soot by adopting the light extinction/scattering techniques. The experimental result showed that the mixing of ethane and propane in ethylene diffusion flame increased soot volume fraction while the mixing of methane decreased. As compare to the ethylene-base flame, the diameters of soot particles for mixture flames are slightly smaller. While the soot number densities for the mixture flames are much higher. Thus, the increase in the soot volume fraction can be attributed to the appreciably increased soot number density by the fuel mixing.

  • This study was undertaken to evaluate antioxidative activities of substances isolated from marine resources against human low density lipoprotein (LDL). Methanol-water extract(80 : 20, v/v) of Sargassum ringgoldianum had the highest antioxidant activity and the active substance was purified by silica gel column chromatography by eluting chlorform : methanol mixture (80 : 20 v/v). The active fraction was seperated to several spots on the TLC in chlorofrom : methanol (10 : 1, v/v) mixture. Antioxidative activity of band 4 of fraction 2 on TLC was highest than that of $\alpha$-tocopherol against human LDL oxidation by the method of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS). The band 4 of fraction 2 inhibited the copper mediated oxidation of human LDL with almost completely at 1 or 2 mg/ml.

  • TMHMM(Tied Mixture Hidden Markov Model) is an important approach to reduce the number of free parameters in speech recognition. However, this model suffers from a degradation in recognition accuracy due to its GPDF (Gaussian Probability Density Function) clustering error. This paper proposes a clustering algorithm, called HCNN(Homogeneous Centroid Neural network), to cluster acoustic feature vectors in TMHMM. Moreover, the HCNN uses the heterogeneous distance measure to allocate more code vectors in the heterogeneous areas where probability densities of different states overlap each other. When applied to Korean digit isolated word recognition, the HCNN reduces the error rate by 9.39% over CNN clustering, and 14.63% over the traditional K-means clustering.
