  • Full-scale utilizations of batch separation process often require knowledge about thermodynamics and correlation techniques of physical properties of complex mixture consisting of a great number of many unknown components. Various empirical correlations have been proposed to predict the physical properties mostly about the pseudocomponent of petroleum. In this study, one parameter correlations are developed for the calculations of the critical physical properties and ideal heat capacity of the pseudo-component of coal tar fractions. Developed model can provide a tool for the design and operations for the batch distillation of coal tar mixture.

  • Background extraction is an important technique to find the moving objects in video surveillance system. This paper proposes a new on-line background extraction method for color video using vector order statistics. In the proposed method, using the fact that background occurs more frequently than objects, the vector median of color pixels in consecutive frames Is treated as background at the position. Also, the objects of current frame are consisted of the set of pixels whose distance from background pixel is larger than threshold. In the paper, the proposed method is compared with the on-line multiple background extraction based on Gaussian mixture model(GMM) in order to evaluate the performance. As the result, its performance is similar or superior to the method based on GMM.

  • Cavitation causes a great deal of noise, damage to components, vibrations, and a loss of efficiency in devices, such as propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, injectors, torpedoes, etc., Thus, cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems. In this study, a two-phase flow solver based on the homogeneous mixture model has been developed. The flow characteristics around an axisymmetric cylinder were calculated and then validated by comparing with the experimental results in the cavitation water tunnel at the Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute. The results show that this solver is highly suitable for simulating the cavitating flows. After the code validation, the cavity length with changes of water depth, angle of attack and velocity were obtained.. Cavitation inception was also calculated for various operational conditions.

  • One dimensional combustion modeling of aluminum combustion behavior is proposed. Combustion model is assumed that region consists as follows ; preheat, reaction, post reaction region. Flame speed as a function of particle size, equivalence ratio for unitary particles and fraction ratio of micro to nano particle size for binary particles were investigated for lean burn condition at 1 atm. Results were compared with experimental data. For unitary particles, flame speed increase as particle size decreases, but opposite trend with equivalence ratio. For binary particles, flame speed increases proportionally as nano particle fraction increases. For flame structure, separated or overlapping flames are observed, depending on the fraction of nano sized particles.

  • In this paper, an efficient speaker identification based on robust vector quantizationprincipal component analysis (VQ-PCA) is proposed to solve the problems from outliers and high dimensionality of training feature vectors in speaker identification, Firstly, the proposed method partitions the data space into several disjoint regions by roust VQ based on M-estimation. Secondly, the robust PCA is obtained from the covariance matrix in each region. Finally, our method obtains the Gaussian Mixture model (GMM) for speaker from the transformed feature vectors with reduced dimension by the robust PCA in each region, Compared to the conventional GMM with diagonal covariance matrix, under the same performance, the proposed method gives faster results with less storage and, moreover, shows robust performance to outliers.

  • Cavitation causes a great deal of noise, damage to components, vibrations, and a loss of efficiency in devices, such as propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, injectors, torpedoes, etc. Thus, the cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems. In the present work, a two-phase flow solver based on the homogeneous mixture model has been developed. The solver employs an implicit preconditioning, dual time stepping algorithm in curvilinear coordinates. The flow characteristics around Clark-Y hydrofoil were calculated and then validated by comparing with the experimental data. The lift and drag coefficients with changes of angle of attack and cavitation number were obtained. The results show that cavity length and lift, drag coefficient increase with increasing angle of attack.

  • Cavitating flow is usually formed on the surface of a high speed underwater object. When a object moves near a free surface at very high speed, the cavity signature becomes one of the major factors to be overcome by sensors of military satellite. The present work was to study the free surface effect on the ventilated cavitation. The governing equations were Navier-Stokes equations based on a homogeneous mixture model. The multiphase flow solver used an implicit preconditioning method in the curvilinear coordinate system. The cavitation model used here was the one first presented by Merkle et al.(2006) and redeveloped by Park & Ha(2009). Computations considered the free surface effects were carried out with a NACA0012 hydrofoil and the corresponding results were compared with the experimental data to have a good agreement. Calculations were then performed considering the ventilated cavitation, including the effect of non-condensable gas under the free surface effects.

  • This paper considers the effects of propellant mixture ratio and loading errors on the performance of a liquid rocket. Propellant residuals generated by error sources are analyzed for a launch vehicle model whose first stage consists of a cluster rocket of four 75-tonf class engines using a statistical Monte-Carlo approach and then the optimal fuel biases minimizing residuals are computed. The results are validated through comparison with analytic method using approximate formula, which have been applied for other space launch vehicles.

  • ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) requires not only real-time robust lane detection, both straight and curved, but also predicting upcoming steering direction by detecting the curvature of lanes. In this paper, a curvature lane detection algorithm is proposed to enhance the accuracy and detection rate based on using inverse perspective images and Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) to segment the lanes from the background under various illumination condition. To increase the speed and accuracy of the lane detection, this paper used template matching, RANSAC and proposed post processing method. Through experiments, it is validated that the proposed algorithm can detect both straight and curved lanes as well as predicting the upcoming direction with 92.95% of detection accuracy and 50fps speed.

  • Temperature is a critical parameter in yield improvement for wafer manufacturing. In chemical vapor deposition (CVD) equipment, crack defect in ceramic heater leads to yield reduction, however, there is no suitable ceramic heater fault detection system for conventional CVD equipment. This paper proposes a short-time zero-crossing rate based fault detection method for the ceramic heater in CVD equipment. The proposed method measures the output signal ($V_{pp}$) of RF filter and extracts the zero-crossing rate (ZCR) as feature vector. The extracted feature vectors have a discriminant power and Gaussian mixture model (GMM) based fault detection method can detect fault in ceramic heater. Experimental results, carried out by measured signals provided by a CVD equipment manufacturer, indicate that the proposed method detects effectively faults in various process conditions.
