Andesitic pyroclastics and lava flows are deposited as a part of composite volcanoes by Cretaceous volcanic activity in Geojae Island, off the coast of Korea. The andesitic pyroclastics are composed of tuff breccia and lapilli tuff minor intercalated tuff. Lava flows are divided into dense and porphyritic andesite containing phenocrysts of plagioclase, pyroxene, and/or hornblende. The andesitic rocks represent charactersitcs of carc-alkaline BAR association with basalt, basaltic andesite, andesite, and dacite to rhyolite. Major element variations of the volcanic rocks show that $Al_2O_3$, total FeO, CaO, MgO and $TiO_2$ decrease with increasing $SiO_2$ but $K_2O$ and total alkalis increase, and represent differntiation trend of calc-alkaline rock series. In spider diagram, contents of Sr, K, Rb, Ba, and Th are relatively high, but contents of Nb, P, Ti and Cr are low. These petrochemcial characteristics are similar to those of rocks from island arc or continental margein related to plate subduction. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns of volcanic rocks are paralle to subparallel, with LREE enriched than HREE, and show gradual increase of negative Eu anomaly from basalt to dacite and rhyolite, suggesting comagmatic fractional crystallization with minor effects of assimilation and magma mixing. Andesitic rocks are assumed medium-K orogenic andesites that formed in the tectomagmatic environment of subduction zone under normal continental margin arc.

This study is to form the self assembly of cubic crystalline phase to penetrate into the skin epidermis. The various performance synthesized diglyceryl phytylacetate (DGPA) having hydroxyl group (-OH) and 4 methyl chains with phytyl group was carried out as an amphoteric lipid such as emulsifying power, self assembly. Emulsifying activity of DGPA was very stabilized on only 1% of small content, it could make a W/O emulsion containing high internal phase incorporated with water. Cubic liquid crystal structure with DGPA on three-phase diagram was formed, when mixed DGPA, dimethicone (2CS), and water. Through three-phase diagram forming the cubic liquid crystal area, hexagonal structure zone, and mixing water phase and hexagonal structure area, reversed micelle area were respectively certified. Its structure was proved by the SAXS (small angled x-ray scattering) analysis. As an application, formation of cubosome containing 10% of magnesium ascorbylphosphate and 5% of pyridoxine tris-hexyldecanoate was encapsulated. Occlusive effect of cubosome had above 1.7 times better than reversed micelle. From using poloxamer of dispersing agent, phase structure recovered from W/O emulsion to cubic liquid crystal phase when storage in $33^{\circ}C$ incubator. Therefore, our this study is expected to be as epidermal-dermal skin absorbers in skin care cosmetics and pharmaceuticals industries as raw materials to form a cubic crystal phase through a more in-depth research to DGPA having amphoteric lipid property.
The chemical composition and noble gas isotopes of 10 deep groundwater samples were analyzed to know the circulation of groundwaters in the Yangsan fault and the Gampo fault. The chemical types of groundwaters show the $Ca-HCO_3$ type and $Ca-SO_4(Cl)$ type, and show indistinct relationship with geology. Noble gas isotopic data of most groundwaters were plotted along the air-crust mixing line on $^3He/^4He$ vs. $4^He/^{20}Ne$ diagram, and show dominant $^3He$ of air origin except one sample that shows helium mixing of crust origin. This indicates that groundwater actively circulates along fault, and fault could not play an role of upward pathway of a deep-seated helium gas. A comparatively high $^4He$ indicates that groundwater flows in an aquifer assuring relatively enough water-rock interaction.
Thermodynamic data of mineral reactions were used to construct a phase diagram for the formation of illite from andalusite at one bar and 325${\circ}C$ in the hydrothermal alteration. Based on chemical compositions, the free energy of formation of illite coexisting with andalusite was calculated by assuming the ideal mixing ina bunary system consisting of muscovite and pyrophyllite components. For illite with structural formula $K_{0.86}Al_{2.93}Si_{3.03}O_{10}(OH)_2$, its free energy of formation is -1147.727 kcal/mole at the condition under consideration. The stability area of illite is more narrow than that of end-member muscovite and prefers lower activity of silica. Illite was formed by hydration of andalusite while pyrophyllite decomposed. Illitization took place preferentially at margin and/or along fractures of andalusite.

In order to investigate the seasonal variation of watermass in the central coast of the southern sea of korea, oceanographic observation on the fishing grounds were carried out by the trainingship of Yosu University on May, Aug. and Nov. in 1998 and Feb. in 1999. The resultes obtained are summerized as follows : 1). The watermass in the fishing ground were divided into the coastal water(30.0~31.6$\textperthousand$ ), mixing water(31.7~33.4$\textperthousand$) and the offshore water(33.5~35.0$\textperthousand$) according to the distribution of salinity from T-S diagram plotted all salinity data observed on May, Aug. and Nov. in 1998 and Feb. in 1999. 2) The ranges of temperature and salinity were from 14.1$^{\circ}C$ to 18.8$^{\circ}C$ and from 32.2$\textperthousand$ to 34.9$\textperthousand$ in spring(May), from 14.2$^{\circ}C$ to 27.7$^{\circ}C$ and from 29.0$\textperthousand$ to 34.7$\textperthousand$ in summer(August), from 13.4$^{\circ}C$ to 21.3$^{\circ}C$ and from 31.45$\textperthousand$ to 34.5$\textperthousand$ in autumn(November) and from 8.2$^{\circ}C$ to 14.8$^{\circ}C$ and from 33.9$\textperthousand$ to 34.6$\textperthousand$ in winter(February), respectively. 3) The distribution of watermass in the fishing ground varied largely each seasons, but a general tendency on the distribution was obtained. That is, in spring and autumm the offshore water was distributed most widely and in summer the coastal and mixing water occupied the fishing ground but in winter the offshore water prevailed. 4) Variation of temperature and salinity were appeared between the surface and 30m in the coastal region and between the surface and 50m in the open ocaen region. Therefore, in the summer the thermocline and halocline were made between surface and 30m layer with vertical gradients of 10.5$^{\circ}C$/30m and 4.0$\textperthousand$/30m in the coastal region and in the open ocean region the thermocline and halocline were made between surface and 50m layer with vertical gradients of 13.$0^{\circ}C$/50m and 3.8$\textperthousand$/50m.

Distribution of indicator species of copepods and chaetognaths were studied as an indicator species of water mass in the southeastern area of the Yellow Sea. Undinula darwini, Lucicutia flavicornis, Pleuromamma gracilis, Euchaeta resselli, Euchaeta plane and Sagitta enflata were found to be reliable indicator species for determining warm water mass. Of these species, E. plana and E. rusrelli have a weak tolerance on the low temperature. Sagitta crassa was indicator species of neritic waters; Sagitta bedoti was that of mixing waters. Centropages abdominalis represented neritic cold waters. In February, U darwini, L. flavicornis, P. gracilis, E. russelli, E. plana and S. enflata occurred in the western waters of Cheju-Do where warm waters over $14^{\circ}C$ occupied. Centropages abdominalis occurred in the northern area beyond Chindo with water temperature less than $10^{\circ}C$. E. plana, E. russelli and S. bedoti were found at the regions between Cheju-Do and Chindo where the water temperature was $12- 14^{\circ}C$ corresponding to the mixing waters. Based on cluster analysis and T-S diagram in February three different water masses were identified from the south to the north. In August, water masses were analyzed at two different layers, 0-20m and 20m- bottom layers, separated by bhermocline depth. In 0-20m layer, E. plana and E. russelli were found from the western waters of Cheju-Do to Daehuksando. In 20m- bottom layer, E. russelli and E plena occurred at the northwestern waters of Cheju-Do with the water temperature warmer than $12^{\circ}C.\;C.$ abdominalis was found at the northern area beyond Chindo. Based on the cluster analysis and T-S diagram in August three different water masses at 0-20m and 20m-bottom layers were identified from the coast to the offshore. C. abdominalis was found at the adjacent water of Chindo at 0-20m layer and the northern area beyond Chindo at 20m~bottom layer. This fact suggested that the cold water mass existed at tile adjacent waters of Chindo in summer.
In this thesis, I examined the mental, philosophical aspects and the aesthetic sense of our ancestors through the study of the patterns pictured in the mural paintings of Koguryo dynasty's old tomb. To view the mode of construction in Koguryo dynasty from present angle, the detailed analysis of the patterns was done. As a result, I could fully understand the formative consciousness of our nation. 1. I defined the process of transition of the mural paintings by putting some 70 mural aintings into the form of a diagram. 2. The cultural aspects of the mural paintings in Koguryo dynasty were characterized by the fusion of our primitive religion and Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism which were introduced from China. From this fact, I could inferred that Koguryo people were giving off the strong desire for the faith by means of the mural paintings. Further more I found that configuration of the patterns such as religious elements. 3. The types of the patterns were classified into four types, this is, geometric type, natural type, cultural type and abstract type, Among these types, geometric type and natural type were nonsymbolic in nature but became cultured and abstracted in course of time. cultural pattern and abstract pattern got the symbolic meaning in the long run. Of all the constitution of the patterns represented in the mural paintings such as repeat constitution, left and right symmetric constitution, top and bottom symmetric constitution and rotary symmetric constitution, the left and right symmetric constitution was mainly used and some monotony of left and right symmetric constitution. The analysis of motif which was got from the mode of the patterns showed that the mixing of symbolic and nonsymbolic patterns made it possible to regard the separate symbol as compound in nonsymbolic patterns and the combination between nonsymbolic patterns ensured the understanding of other patterns in certain cases. Our ancestors made great efforts to transmit certain meaning symbolically. Also to heighten the symbolism, they drew the meangless patterns firstly and then appended meaning to those patterns secondly. Furthermore, they offered the background to the patterns comblined with symbolism, so that meaning transmission was clarified at last. As mentioned above, the patterns shown in the mural paintings of Koguryo dynasty's old tomb were characterized by natural beauty. And natural beauty was found out clearly in the form and constitution of the patterns. Therefore I concluded that our nation's religious, philosophical tradition was acted on the patterns strongly.

Temperature, salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll-a, and primary production were measured within the upper 200 m water column in the area around the South Shetland Islands in January, 2000. Surface temperature was relatively high in the Drake Passage north of the South Shetland Islands and low in the northeastern area of the Antarctic Peninsula. In contrast, surface salinity was low in the Drake Passage and increased toward the Antarctic Peninsula, reaching the maximum value in the northeastern area of the Antarctic Peninsula. Surface nutrients were low in the Drake Passage and high in the area near the South Shetland Islands. Surface chlorophyll-a was also low in the Drake Passage and near the Antarctic Peninsula and high in the area of the northern King George Island. The study area could be classified as four geographical zones based on the characteristic shape of the T/S diagrams;the Drake Passage, the Bransfield Strait, the mixed zone, and the Weddell Sea. Each geographical zone showed apparently different physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. Phytoplankton biomass was relatively low in the Drake Passage and the Weddell Sea and high in the Bransfield Strait and the mixed zone. The low phytoplankton biomass in the Weddell Sea could be explained by the low water temperature and deep surface mixing down to 200 m. The high grazing pressure and low availability of iron could be responsible for the low phytoplankton biomass in the Drake Passage.

A cooling system is indispensable for the fossil and nuclear power plants which produce electricity by rotating the turbines with hot steam. A cycle of the typical cooling system includes pumping of seawater at the intake pump house, exchange of heat at the condenser, and discharge of hot water to the sea. The cooling type of the nuclear power plants in Korea recently evolves from the conventional surface intake/discharge systems to the submerged intake/discharge systems that minimize effectively an intake temperature rise of the existing plants and that are beneficial to the marine environment by reducing the high temperature region with an intensive dilution due to a high velocity jet and density differential at the mixing zone. It is highly anticipated that the future nuclear power plants in Korea will accommodate the submerged cooling system in credit of supplying the lower temperature water in the summer season. This study investigates the approach flow patterns at the velocity caps and discharge flow patterns from diffusers using the 3-D computational fluid dynamics code of $FLOW-3D^{(R)}$. The approach flow test has been conducted at the velocity caps with and without a cap. The discharge flow from the diffuser was simulated for the single-port diffuser and multi-ports diffuser. The flow characteristics to the velocity cap with a cap demonstrate that fish entrainment can significantly be minimized on account of the low vertical flow component around the cap. The flow pattern around the diffuser is well agreed with the schematic diagram by Jirka and Harleman.
Geochemical data, including Sr-Nd-Pb-Mg-Zn isotopes, reported on the late Cenozoic intraplate basaltic rocks in the Korean Peninsula (Mt. Baekdu, Jeongok, Baengnyeong Island, Pyeongtaek, Asan, Ganseong, Ulleung Island, Dok Island, and Jeju Island) are summarized to constrain their mantle source lithologies, and the nature of mantle end-members required. In the Sr-Nd isotope correlation diagram, Jeju basalts plot in the field of EM2-type oceanic island basalts (OIB), while the other basalts fall in the EM1-type OIB field. In Pb-Pb isotope space, Jeju basalts show a mixing array between Indian MORB and EM2 component, whereas the other basalts display an array with EM1 component. The Korean basalts were derived from a hybrid source of garnet lherzolite and recycled stagnant slab materials (eclogite/pyroxenite, pelagic sediments, carbonates) in the mantle transition zone. The EM1 component could be ancient (~2.0 Ga) K-hollandite-bearing pelagic sediments that were isolated for a long period in the mantle transition zone due to their neutral buoyancy. The EM2 component might have been relatively young (probably Pacific slab) and recently recycled clay-rich pelagic sediments. Eclogite and carbonates are unlikely to account for the EM components, but they are common in the mantle source of the Korean basalts.
