  • This paper reports the development of an automatic system for mixing offset printing ink. The ink mixing process is important in industrial fields where paint and ink are used. In particular, there is a demand for automating the process of producing spot colors, which involves mixing a small quantity of high-viscosity ink. The authors designed, fabricated, and experimentally tested an automatic mixing system that employs the revolution and rotation of ink and the transmission by belts. The performance of the ink mixing system was verified by conducting numerous experiments to determine the effect of rotation direction, speed, ink container axis angle, and ink amount. Conditions suitable for mixing offset ink are presented for use as guidelines for producing spot colors.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic characteristics of the shaft with impeller model which is the most important part in developing the resin mixing machine. Through reverse engineering, it is possible to make the shaft with impeller geometry model which is necessary vibration characteristic analysis by commercial impeller. The natural frequency analysis and structural analysis using finite element analysis software are performed on the imported commercial shaft with impeller model. The most important fundamental natural frequency of the shaft with impeller model is around 14.5 Hz, which well agrees with modal testing. The most effective design variables were extracted by ANOM(analysis of means) and pareto chart. This paper presents approximation 2nd order polynomial as design variables using RSM(response surface methodology). Generally, RSM take 2 or 3 design variables, but this method uses 5 design variables with table of mixed orthogonal array. Further more, the analyzed result of the commercial shaft with impeller is to be utilized for the structural design of resin chock mixing machine.

  • PURPOSES : In this study blast furnace slag, an industrial byproduct, was used with an activating chemicals, $Ca(OH)_2$ and $Na_2SiO_3$ for carbon capture and sequestration as well as strength development. METHODS : This paper presents the optimized mixing design of Carbon-Capturing and Sequestering Activated Blast-Furnace Slag Mortar. Design of experiments in order to the optimized mixing design was applied and commercial program (MINITAB) was used. Statistical analysis was used to Box-Behnken (B-B) method in response surface analysis. RESULTS : The influencing factors of experimental are water ratio, Chemical admixture ratio and Curing temperature. In the results of response surface analysis, to obtain goal performance, the optimized mixing design for Carbon-Capturing and Sequestering Activated Blast-Furnace Slag Mortar were water ratio 40%, Chemical admixture ratio 58.78% and Curing temperature of $60^{\circ}C$. CONCLUSIONS : Compared with previous studies of this experiment is to some extent the optimal combination is expected to be reliable.

  • Y-jet nozzle has various advantages over other twin-fluid nozzles and are used in industrial boilers. However, it costs large energy consumption because of assisted air and its design is complex. The Y-jet nozzle is consisted of a liquid and gas port and a mixing chamber. The diameter of the port and the length of the mixing chamber greatly affect spray and atomization characteristics, therefore, they are the most important factors in nozzle design. In this study, The experimental setup is consisted of a laboratory scale spray system. The characteristics of the Y-jet nozzle according to the design parameters were observed. As a result, it was found that the length of the mixing chamber did not have effect on the flow rate and the choking condition. The droplet size was measured using a Malvern type measuring device. In addition, measurements were conducted in the front and the right directions of the nozzles. Based on the results, the SMD View Ratio is defined. It is the asymmetrical design characteristics of the Y-jet nozzle.

  • Industrial mixers to homogeneously blend particulate materials have been developed and widely used in various industries. However, most industrial mixers have at most two-degree-of-freedom for the operation, which limits the range of operation parameter selection for optimal blending. This paper proposes a multi-degree-of-freedom robotic mixer designed by converging a conventional drum blender and a robotic manipulator and evaluated its performance in a virtual operating environment. Discrete element simulations were conducted for mixing performance evaluation. The numerical results showed that the proposed mixer design exhibits a better mixing performance than conventional ones.

  • The flow in a microchannel is usually characterized as a low Reynolds number (Re) so that good mixing is quite difficult to be achieved. In this regard, we developed a novel chaotic micromixer, named Serpentine Laminating Micromixer (SLM) in the present study, Part 1. In the SLM, the higher level of chaotic mixing can be achieved by combining two general chaotic mixing mechanisms: splitting/recombination and chaotic advection. The splitting and recombination (in other term, lamination) mechanism is obtained by the successive arrangement of 'F'-shape mixing units in two layers. The chaotic advection is induced by the overall three-dimensional serpentine path of the microchannel. Chaotic mixing performance of the SLM was fully characterized numerically. To compare the mixing performance, a T-type micromixer which has the same width, height and length of the SLM was also designed. The three-dimensional numerical mixing simulations show the superiority of the SLM over the T-type micromixer. From the cross-sectional simulation results of mixing patterns, the chaotic advection effect from the serpentine channel path design acts favorably to realize the ideal lamination of fluid flow as Re increases. Chaotic mixing mechanism, proposed in this study, could be easily integrated in Micro-Total-Analysis-System, Lab-on-a-Chip and so on.

  • The use of the coal ash for surcharge material, in a view of the environmental aspect, can decrease amount of the reclamation through recycling waste materials as well as prevent a destruction of the ecosystem attributed to sand picking. In addition, it can reduce both unit cost of material and construction expenses. In this study, new construction material as alternative surcharge material using coal ash, which is by-product from thermoelectric power plant, were developed. Mixing ratios of fly ash and bottom ash derived from the coal ash in Samchunpo thermoelectric power plants were determined. Furthermore, mixing conditions depending on the ratios of the cement and gypsum used for chemical additive were determined too. Uniaxial compression strength tests were conducted at different mixing conditions and Design graph of optimum mixing ratio at each required strength for economic efficiency is indicated in this paper.

  • In the evaluation method of KS on the activity factor of fly ash, same amount of cement should be replaced with fly ash. Therefore, contradictory effects on concrete strength exist, i. e. strength decease due to low content of cement and strength increase of strength due to filling-pore-function of fly ash. European Committee for Standardization (CEN) specifies the method 1 to 4. adding fly ash without reducing the content of cement, for the evaluation method on activity factor of fly ash. This study investigates the applicability of the method 2 of CEN to mix design of concrete. The followings are derived ; There is a key ratio of f)y ash mixing which enhances the incremental ratio of mixing water to improve fluidity of mortar. The incremental ratio of mixing water is maximized about 11% ratio of fly ash mixing. Compressive strength most slightly increases at that ratio of fly ash mixing. Activity factor of fly ash increases as water-cement ratio becomes low and contents of fly ash becomes high. Moreover, quality of fly ash and condition of mix design affect the applicable amount of fly ash and available range of water-cement ratio. However, this method has some problems for practical purpose because activity factors of fly ash for some cases are over 1.0. Further research should be conducted to develop more useful method of evaluating activity factor of fly ash.
