  • A signal optimization model is proposed by applying the Cell-Transmission Model(CTM) as an embedded traffic flow model to estimate a system-optimal signal timing plan in a transportation network composed of signalized intersections. Beyond the existing signal-optimization models, the CTM provides appropriate theoretical and practical backgrounds to simulate oversaturation phenomena such as shockwave, queue length, and spillback. The model is formulated on the Mixed-Integer Programming(MIP) theory. The proposed model implies a system-optimal in a sense that traffic demand and signal system cooperate to minimize the traffic network cost: the demand departing from origins through route choice behavior until arriving at destinations and the signal system by calculating optimal signal timings considering the movement of these demand. The potential of model's practical application is demonstrated through a comparison study of two signal control strategies: optimal and fixed signal controls.

  • While most or fixed-time control systems such as UTCS produce the signal timing plans that either maximizing bandwidth or minimizing a disutility index of delay and stops, cannot consider the fluctuation of traffic flow. One category of the traffic-response control systems, which make small changes on a predefined signal plan such as SCOOT, cannot be easily modified for feedback real-time control schemes based on observation of variables other than traffic flow. The other category, which decide to whether switch the traffic lights or not at each step of time as in PRODYN, does not adequately consider the relations between traffic flows and traffic lights at each step of time. In this paper we present a complete formulation that adequately consider the relations between traffic flows and traffic lights at each step of time. The formulation is a binary mixed integer linear programing (BMILP) that obtain traffic lights at each step for minimizing delay. Since numarical examples for application of the proposed model illustrated that the model adequately produced dynamic traffic signal plans minimizing delay at each step, the model may be expected to contribute to advanced transportation management systems (ATMS) for dynamic traffic signal control.

  • To achieve high-speed communication and to improve QoS characteristics, ATM is now being used as underlying transfer mechanism of Internet protocols, or TCP/IP. When TCP uses the ABR service in ATM networks, the ABR service control is important to improve the performance of TCP/IP traffic as long as there is no interaction between ABR rate control and TCP flow control. In such environment, the interoperability of EFCI and ER switches becomes unavoidable in order to more effectively control ABR traffic in ATM network. In this paper, we use the model of mixed EFCI-ER environment and discuss the performance issues, e.g., the fairness of bandwidth allocation, drop rate, throughput by using various ER switch algorithms. Among various ERSwitch algorithms, we present one algorithm that have a less network topology and allocate the fair share of VC bandwidth by simulation results.

  • The quality of progression at signalized intersection has the largest potential effect. TRANSYT-7F is widely used to estimate the signal progression delay, but the progress of collecting and executing the compute program appears to be rather cumbersome. The research is to develop the analytical and progressing platoon delay model that is as simple as the methodology of HCM and familiar with the output of simulation model. The general approach to this research was conducted to examine the Rouphail and NCHRP 339 methodology together with the existing progression delay model (TRANSYT-7F. HCM). The scope is contained to be applicable only to cycles with no overflow queue and to obtain a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of changes in the quality of traffic signal progression on stopped delay and to be analyzed a simple mathematical method. The principle assumption for this model is that secondary flows is dispersed and partly mixed with average flow of the primary progressed flow. A second assumption is that through flow is consisted with the part of saturation flow at the front of it and the part of average flow at the rear of it. The delay equations vary for two arrival. The conclusion of this study could be summarized as 1)The evaluation of this model was consistently similar to that of TRANSYT-7F, 2) Platoon pattern has the real traffic flow characteristics. 3) The computing process of progression delay is made to have simple logic and easy calculation by integration, 4) This model could be estimated to be applied in almost all case.

  • This paper proposes a plan to improve the installation and operation of traffic safety facilities using a microscopic simulation by confirming the difference in the perception method and range of autonomous vehicles and human vehicles. In this study, the existing 『Traffic Safety Sign Installation·Management Guidelines』 was reviewed, and safety signs among traffic safety facilities were classified according to changes in vehicle behavior. Subsequently, for the classified facilities, the installation location of the traffic sign was changed through simulation experiments, and the optimal location was inferred to suggest an improvement plan. This study confirmed how traffic safety facilities installed based on the visibility of human drivers affect road efficiency and safety in mixed traffic flow with autonomous vehicles and human-controlled vehicles. The optimal location derived through this study is meaningful because it can be used as the basis for revising the guidelines on the installation and management of traffic safety facilities.

  • To make popular the NEV(Neighborhood Electric Vehicles) uses, it must be considered the supply of infrastructure and the political decision for NEV. However, the guidelines of infrastructure for NEV are not prepared. The guidelines of infrastructure for NEV should be performed in many research and case. The purpose of this study is to reveal the influence of NEV on the two-lane highway traffic flows by TWOPAS simulation model. The main items to check the influence are Average Travel speed, Percent Time Spent Following and Total Delay. The scenario were setup by traffic volume. And the NEV percentages are changed from 1% ~ 30%. The scenario 1 which traffic volume are 650veh/h and the scenario 4 which traffic volume are 2,600veh/h are less influenced by NEV, compare to scenario 2, scenario 3. Because the scenario 1 is more free to make passing other cars and Scenario 4 is fully saturated with existing traffic volumes. The urban two-lane highway which has much traffic volume and the rural two-lane highway which has little traffic volume has affinity for NEV than the other two-lane highway.

  • A new scheduling scheme, which uses channel quality information of each flow in Bluetooth system of ad-hoc network for effective bandwidth assignment, has been proposed in this paper. By an effective bandwidth assignment, QoS (Quality of Service) could have been ensured in case of asymmetric data traffic, mixed data transmission, and congested data transmission in a specific channel. The scheduling algorithm determines channel weights using partial channel information of flows. Case studies conducted by NS-2 (Network Simulator 2) and Bluehoc simulator has been presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed scheduling scheme.

  • Various studies have been conducted using microtraffic simulation (VISSIM) to analyze the safety of traffic flow when introducing autonomous vehicles. However, no studies have analyzed traffic safety in mixed traffic while considering the driving behavior of general vehicles as a parameter in VISSIM. Therefore, the aim of this study was to optimize the input variables of VISSIM for non-autonomous vehicles through genetic algorithms to obtain realistic behavior. A traffic safety analysis was then performed according to the penetration rate of autonomous vehicles. In a 640 meter section of US highway I-101, the number of conflicts was analyzed when the trailing vehicle was a non-autonomous vehicle. The total number of conflicts increased until the proportion of autonomous vehicles exceeded 20%, and the number of conflicts decreased continuously after exceeding 20%. The number of conflicts between non-autonomous vehicles and autonomous vehicles increased with proportions of autonomous vehicles of up to 60%. However, there was a limitation in that the driving behavior of autonomous vehicles was based on the results of the literature and did not represent actual driving behavior. Therefore, for a more accurate analysis, future studies should reflect the actual driving behavior of autonomous vehicles.

  • Several problems caused by inevitable increment of airplane have been issued. The most effective solution to solve the issues is considered as establishing appropriate Air Traffic Management (ATM) that reduces aircraft's delay at an airport and intensify the airport's capacity. The purpose of this paper is to produce the optimum aircraft schedules that maximize the aircraft throughput by smooth air traffic flow near terminal area of an airport In this paper, mathematical formulations of the scheduling problem are firstly specified. Based on the mathematical modelling, an Optimization-Based Flight Scheduler that provides the optimum flight schedules for arriving aircraft is developed by introducing the Mixed Integer Linear Programming(MILP) and the Genetic Algorithms(GA). With this scheduler, we calculated the optimum schedules to compare to real schedule data from an Incheon Airport. As a result, it is validated that aircraft throughput produced by the optimum schedule is much better than that of the schedule from the Incheon airport. The optimization-based flight scheduler is expected to deal with problems due to the aircraft saturation in near future.
