  • The problem of a semi-infinite magneto-electro-elastically impermeable mode-III crack in a magneto-electro-elastic material is considered under the action of impact loads. For the case when a pair of concentrated anti-plane shear impacts, electric displacement and magnetic induction impacts are exerted symmetrically on the upper and lower surfaces of the crack, the magneto-electro-elastic field ahead of the crack tip is determined in explicit form. The dynamic intensity factors and dynamic energy density factor are obtained. The method adopted is to reduce the mixed initial-boundary value problem, by using the Laplace and Fourier transforms, into three simultaneous dual integral equations, one of which is converted into an Abel's integral equation and the others into a singular integral equation with Cauchy kernel. Based on the obtained fundamental solutions of point impact loads, the solutions of two kinds of different loading cases are evaluated by integration. For some particular cases, the present results reduce to the previous results.

  • Disc specimen with the center crack and edge crack simulated by two-dimensional static method is used to analyze the stress field around the crack tip in terms of the stress intensity factor, K. A simple and convenient method of testing to realize the mifed mode stress intensity factor of the cracked body is used, The conclusions obtatined in this photoelastlc analysis are as follows ; 1. According to this experiment, cracked disc specimen can be used to demonstrate the mixed mode stress intensity factor analysis by simply changing the crack angle from the loading line. 2. Despite the simplicity and continuous data reading, the photoelastic method shows the slightly lower strain reading comparing to the FEM analysis method. 3. In this photoelastic analysis, $K_{I}$ of center cracked disc specimen under a pair of compressive load shows negative value as the crack angle increases over 30$^{\circ}$.

  • In most engineering structures, fracture often takes place due to fatigue. Therefore, many studies about the effect of the various mode-mixities on fatigue characteristics have been performed. However, most of the former studies only address metal/metal interfaces or delamination of composite. In this study, the fatigue characteristics of composite/metal interfaces are investigated. The fatigue tests were performed using single leg bending(SLB)specimens that comprise composite and steel bonded to each other using co-cure bonding method. This paper focuses on fatigue characteristics depending on different mode ratios$(G_{II}/G_T$. The overall results obtained in this study show that the crack propagation rate increases with the mode II loading component.

  • This paper deals with the applicability of linear elastic fracture mechanics under centrifugal force. Stress intensity factors K are calculated as a function of the inclination crack of length 2a, the position at different angular velocities 1200rpm, 2400rpm and at different values of the inclination crack angle .phi. ( .phi. = 0 .deg. , 15 .deg. , 30 .deg. , 45 .deg. , 60 .deg. , 75 .deg. , 90 .deg. ) and are measured in models of rotation disks using a boundary element method. Especially, stress intensity factors $K_{l}$ and $K_{ll}$ obtained separately from the crack tip of the mixed mode, were used to further investigate the influence of $K_{l}$ and $K_{ll}$ on fracture in rotating disks. With the increase in the speed of rotation, the effect of K/ sub l/became larger where as that of $K_{ll}$ became small. For the increase in the inclination crack angle .phi. , a decrease in $K_{l}$ and an increase in $K_{ll}$ were observed.

  • The light weight composite materials have been replacing in high performance structures. The object of this study is to examine the effects of the initial crack location about a delamination in a PVC foam cored sandwich composite that is used for the strength improvement of structures. The initial crack location and fiber laminates thickness were changed with several types. The MMB specimen was used for evaluating the fracture toughness and crack behaviors. The material used in the experiment is a commercial twill carbon prepreg in CFRP material and Airex in PVC foam core. Sandwich laminate composites are composed by PVC foam core layer between CFRP face sheets. The face sheets were fabricated as 2 types of 5 and 8 plies. The initial cracks were located in a PVC form core and the interface of upper CFRP sheet. From the results, the crack initiation was affected with the location of the initial crack inserted in the PVC foam core. Among them, the initial crack at 1/3 of the upper part of the PVC foam core was the most rapid progression. And the critical energy release rate was $0.40kJ/m^2$, which is the lowest value when the initial crack was inserted into the interface between a PVC foam core and CFRP laminated with 5 plies. Meanwhile, the highest value of $1.27kJ/m^2$ was obtained when the initial crack was located at the center line in case of the 8 plies.

  • Experimental procedure to measure fracture toughness (J$_{c}$) under mixed mode loading using CTS(Compact Tension-Shear) specimens is described. It\`s loading angle ranges from 0$^{\circ}$ to 45$^{\circ}$ with interval of 157. The general outline of experimental procedure is similar to that of ASTM E8l3-89 fur mode I fracture. Equations fur determining J-integral is quoted from the authors' previous works. The relation between unloading compliance and physical crack size was calibrated. As an example, fracture toughness of aluminum alloy 2024p-7361 was measured and some reasonable results of J$_{c}$ with various loading angles were obtained.

  • Rock fracture mechanics has been widely applied to blasting, hydraulic fracturing, rock slope and many other practical problems in rock engineering. But a measuring method for the fracture toughness of rock, one of the mort important parameters in fracture mechanics as an intrinsic property of rock, has not been yet well established. To obtain mode I rock fracture toughness, the more favorable disc-typed specimens such as CCNBD, SCB, chevron-notched SCB and BDT were used in this study. Rock fracture toughness under mixed-mode and mode II conditions was measured by using the STCA applied to the CCNBD specimen. Size effects such as specimen thickness, diameter and notch length on fracture toughness were investigated. From the mixed-mode results, fracture envelops were obtained by applying various regression curves. The mixed-mode results were also compared with three mixed-mode failure criteria. In each fracture toughness test, acoustic emission was measured to get the data for determining the load levels of different crack propagation patterns.

  • A model is constructed to evaluate the mode III stress intensity factor(SIF) for orthotropic three-layered material with a center crack subjected to uniform anti-plane shear loading. A mixed boundary value problem is formulated by Fourier integral transform method and a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind is derived. The integral equation is numerically analyzed to evaluate the effects of the ratio of shear modulus, strength of each layer and crack length to layer thickness on the stress intensity factor.

  • A developed hybrid method for crack identification of beams is presented. Based on the Euler-Bernouli beam theory and concepts of fracture mechanics, governing equation of the cracked beams is reformulated. Finite element (FE) method as a powerful numerical tool is used to discritize the equation in space domain. After transferring the equations from time domain to frequency domain, frequencies and mode shapes of the beam are obtained. Efficiency of the governed equation for free vibration analysis of the beams is shown by comparing the results with those available in literature and via ANSYS software. The used equation yields to move the influence of cracks from the stiffness matrix to the mass matrix. For crack identification measured data are produced by applying random error to the calculated frequencies and mode shapes. An objective function is prepared as root mean square error between measured and calculated data. To minimize the function, hybrid genetic algorithms (GAs) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique is introduced. Efficiency, Robustness, applicability and usefulness of the mixed optimization numerical tool in conjunction with the finite element method for identification of cracks locations and depths are shown via solving different examples.
